The Florida Swamp Kings Netflix documentary has been released recapping Urban Meyer's time in Gainesville during the late 2000s and the great run the Gators went on. On Late Kick Live Ep 420 Josh Pate shared some of his takeaways on episodes 2 and 3. What was it like for Urban Meyer to discover how hard it was getting a team back up after winning a title? It must’ve been great going to UF as a sports fan during this time. Two championships in football, two championships in basketball, all within three years. As a UGA fan, I must say this was very impressive.

It's a fun watch for any college football fan but it's a puff piece. They should have had a full episode talking about the 30+ arrests and multiple felonies.

@@CoolHandLuke813 I'm saying out of 4 parts, a quarter of that could have easily been devoted to the dark side of Urban's run at UF. It was unusual even for the SEC which embraces cheating/ignoring rules/breaking laws like no other conference.

@@MidnightHozz I get what you’re saying. I mean I definitely think they could’ve delved more into the dark side of it all. I’m not saying they shouldn’t have. But I do think devoting an entire episode to that stuff is a bit much too. What they could’ve done is bring up more things as they happened chronologically throughout the timeline. Like mentioning how a key player got suspended for a DUI right before the 09 rematch with Bama. Stuff like that.

It was a puff piece. They glossed over the 30 arrests, Hernandez, Rainey, Cam Newton stealing a laptop and Urban Meyer's "cough cough" illiness that he had to leave. Must have been done by a Gator grad.

Riley Cooper never did anything regrettable while at UF. It was never proven that Hernandez did anything while at UF either. Although, the Cam Newton angle would’ve been interesting, I agree.

@@Senio25the biggest thing I heard with Riley Cooper is that he called somebody the N word at a country music concert, but that happened a couple years into his NFL career. It wasn’t a great look for him.

‘07 was my freshman year of college AKA the craziest year ever. I remember watching the #2 team in all the land, the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA BULLS take on WVU. Just bananas year. Pate is right. Games were louder, fans were crazier. My generation had the best of both words - preadvanced iPhone football and the crazy games that came in that time, then the insane ramp up of tech. ‘07-‘10 college football still my favorite era

A lot of bad national championships during those years. USC blows out Oklahoma, Florida blows out Ohio State, LSU blows out Ohio State, Alabama dominates Texas without Colt McCoy, etc. ..

The one thing that gives me some confidence, is that Florida historically has had that super athletic, run and gun QB that always gives Tennessee fits. Mertz isn’t that guy, and I don’t mean that with any disrespect, we just usually play pocket passers pretty well.

I hated how they did the Dawgs in 08 ( the year after the end zone celebration). They really rubbed it in our faces, and Meyer called timeouts near the end of the game to prolong it.

If you are a Gator fan you will enjoy it, if you are not, then it wasn't good at all. Just a love fest for Urban Meyer and bunch of talking with Tebow. Ignored virtually all the issues with Hernandez, Pouncey brothers, Harvin.

@@CoolHandLuke813everything. Hernandez and his issues there are relevant to what led to his ultimate demise. Percy and his issues with concussions. Getting into a fight with a receiver coach I believe. Cam Newton situation etc. so much was left out.

@@Dc-dp6go I definitely would’ve liked to have seen more. It’s just hard to talk too much about stuff with Percy or the Pounceys when they declined being in the documentary. Like it would be kinda weird mentioning all of these personal stories and details about certain people when they themselves aren’t even there to give their side of it.

It’s like if they wanted all that dirty stuff broadcasted, then you don’t get the cast, and then it’s just pure speculation l, which isn’t what people want to see.

Plus most of the juicy stuff with him happened way after he was done at UF anyway. But yes I definitely agree that I wish they had spent some time on the Pounceys. It’s really a bummer that they couldn’t get them or Percy to be in the doc. I guess that’s partially why they kinda shied away talking about them more. But I’m sure they reached out to them to be in it. They just didn’t want to for whatever reason. They really would’ve made it better though. They could’ve shared their stories.

Tebow literally broke Herschel Walker’s all-time rushing record. So, yeah, he definitely deserved it over McFadden. McFadden was a hell of a player, but he didn’t break Herschel Walker’s record like Tebow did.

The year before Tebow won, the heisman committee admitted that they gave it to Troy smith over Darren McFadden because they had never given it to a sophomore before and they were confident mcfadden would get it the next year. The next year, McFadden finished runner up again (only player to ever do that) because the committee broke their rule and gave it to a sophomore. Not Tebows fault, but Arkansas fans hate him because of it. We’ll, that and the game where Arkansas had tebows team beat in Gainesville and the refs cheated their ass off.

They should definitely make a part 2 but they should let A&E do it since they are so experienced at making shows about criminals. Netflix certainly left out the fact that his 5 years at Florida produced the most felons in NCAA history including a freaking serial killer. However Swamp kings definitely seems fitting for a title since First 48 was taken. LMFAO

This is the issue with documentries. They often turn into fluff pieces where shitty human beings can pave over their legacies in exchange for the name value of their involvement. What would have been a good documentry has been ruined by Urban Meyer and Pastor Tebow.

I'm sure there will be a Bama one eventually. Florida during the 00's was interesting. You had a lot of larger than life personalities. Say what you want about Tebow, but he was about as famous as a college athlete ever has been while in college.

Cam was never officially kicked off the team. He was suspended after he stole a laptop and got in some 💩 over that. By the time that was all wrapped up, his relationship with the coaches wasn’t very good anymore so he decided to transfer. So he transferred. He wasn’t kicked off.

@@adityag485 I went to UF too. No need to play the superiority card dude lol. But anyway, well, being expelled is not the same thing as being kicked off the team anyway. That means the University made him leave and not the coach. So, we are both still making the same point here regardless, which is that Cam was never kicked off the team by the coaches. He dug his own grave at UF because he was and has always been a complete idiot.

Everybody’s just arguing semantics on “expelled” vs “kicked off” lol. Bottom line is Urban didn’t kick players off the team just because they were too talented and he knew they’d help the team win, not just because that one kid passed away a whole year after being kicked off the team. Urban is just trying to rewrite the narrative of him refusing to hold players accountable when anyone with common sense can see right through that bs.

i heard it was a fluff piece for urban meyer? have no desire to watch this..... did they include tony joiner's story? guy broke into a police impound- got grand theft auto for stealing his own car. urban meyer: "it would be impossible for me to comment on this matter because i do not know all of the details." few years later, the same urban meyer claims (on a college football set) "if jameis winston was on his team and he screamed obscenities in the student union, he would do the right thing and suspend him."

I’m an Aggie and have been to all the major stadiums in the country. LSU is by a lot the loudest and most difficult place I’ve ever been. Kyle Field is loud but we r too civilized. Tuscaloosa has had too much success so they don’t get too loud anymore.

Spoiler Alert: The entire documentary is a white washing of that time period in UF Football. That said, it's a solid piece, but it was clear that UF only gave it's approval provided there's an honest attempt to skew the perspective just enough to avoid the casual fan asking intrusive questions.

@@noelramirez1551 I get what you’re saying but I do agree that crowds were louder in the 2000s than they are today. I know because I’ve been to plenty of games in both eras. I do think there was more genuine passion back in those days by both fans and players too. These days, player commitment to the University means nothing and they just want the next NIL deal. So there’s a degree of enthusiasm for CFB that is just a little off now when compared to 15-20 years ago.

@@noelramirez1551 for sure. And I’m not against players getting paid btw. I think that’s totally fine. But if it gets in the way of a player’s commitment to themselves and to their team to better themselves and their team, then it’s a problem. I think we are seeing some of that happen.
