This game reveals why so many Buckeye fans were disappointed in Day. THIS is the version we knew we were, but our stubborn, nervous and selfish coach was more preoccupied with proving the media wrong about "toughness" than spreading teams out and maximizing our firepower. We weren't wrong at all, and I'd argue that our heat played a huge role in getting him to open it up. No way he feels the pressure if the entire fanbase is satisfied with beating up on Northwestern but losing to UM and losing in the playoffs with the most talent in the country
@adolphdooley363222 күн бұрын
Hold on! Michigan had a great defense in the red zone. As bad as Michigans offense was, without the toughness of the defense Michigan would not have reached bowl eligibility. Tennessee had no defense, nor offense. I am a “Michigan Man” but in the playoffs, and the Buckeyes not playing Michigan, “GO BUCKS”
@demetriusevans413922 күн бұрын
@adolphdooley3632 No disrespect to UM, but if Ryan Day opens the playbook, there is no defense good enough to hold OSU to 10 points. That was inexcusable. Even if you actually thought UM would win, no way you thought it would be by that score. The talent is there, but it's no good if you don't use it.
@adolphdooley363222 күн бұрын
@ if you disagree explain why? Michigans offense was so awful in 2024, it was the worst offense in D1 college football. In every statistical category, Michigan was ranked near, or at the bottom of every statistical category. The highest ranking for Michigan was 112th in points per game; every other statistical ranking was worst than 112th. With an offense that bad, it made a great defense appear weak. Michigans defense had to make up for an offense that could not score points. The Buckeyes found out Michigans defense in the red zone was stellar. Points per game rank: 112th Passing offense per game rank: 132nd Yards per play rank: 113th Turnover margin rank: 117th First downs per game rank: 120th Turnovers lost rank: 122nd Plays of 10+ yards rank: 130th Plays of 20+ yards rank: 131st Total yards for the season: 3531 Total touchdowns for season: 31 With an offense that bad, the defense had to be good to win 7 games. Michigan had the top defense in the country if you factor in the weakness of the offense; a weak offense is an enemy of the defense.

GO BUCKEYES! That was the best offense performance I have seen from Ohio State overall since 2023 vs Michigan, in the postseason since 2022 vs Georgia, and a big win since 2021 vs Utah. What a game plan from Ryan Day. This team is now properly recognized as a dangerous threat to win it all (they always were). It all comes down to the Rose Bowl and what happens after against likely Texas if they beat the Ducks.

This just goes to show how mental The Game is for OSU now. Ryan Day wanted to prove his team was tougher than Michigan and didn't play to the teams strengths that Michigan's defense have had a hard time stopping all year. In this game they did, they used their ELITE receivers to bully the volunteers. Those Buckeyes look GOOD (I'm sorry to say lol) I definitely feel they can beat Oregon and even win a Natty.

Yeah I'd say even his wife and kids shamed him for ignoring his elite WR's in favor of running the ball into Michigan's only strength - their interior D line. JJ Smith only saw TWO targets the entire Michigan game. That's a fireable offense. I'm jaded though because I've seen Day turn that offense loose in the past only to ultimately turtle when the competition got better. I'm at the point where I won't believe that he has learned his lesson until I see it (more than one game)

That offensive performance/scheming was exactly what I and many others were calling for. Don't understand why they didn't do that vs Michigan, but at least they figured it out. It seems like both losses this year led to changes for the better. The Oregon loss led to better defensive scheming and the loss to Michigan led to the offensive playcalling we saw last night. They used their playmakers and played to their strengths. I knew that the rushing yards would come as a result as well because they were able to keep the defense on its heels with the passing attack, and that made it a whole lot easier to have success running the ball. The exact opposite of trying to run between the tackles to then open up the pass. That just does not work for this team

As an Oregon fan, I’m more worried about Henderson than Judkins in the Rose Bowl. I know Smith and Ebuka are gonna get theirs but I think our defensive backs can limit them enough to let our offense keep up or stay ahead. It’s really only about our line of scrimmage and if we can create some more turnovers or get some 3rd down stops and 4th, if needed.

@jimmy563422 күн бұрын
I agree with your takes. My thoughts: Tennessee and the SEC are generally overrated. Tennessee linebackers were missing in action Tennessee secondary is average at best. Tennessee underestimated Ohio State’s O line and the defensive game plan of not blitzing killed them. Ohio State stifled Tennessee’s run game and forced Nico to win the game. Tennessee’s wideouts are not elite and Ohio States D backs while maybe not elite are head and shoulders better athletes. Ohio State’s D line was able to get pressure on Nico and they only blitzed when it was obviously a passing situation. Jim Knowles had a great defensive game plan. He knew if he forced Tennessee into a passing game, they were done. Tennessee is a good team, but not elite. The game plan on both sides of the ball was a failure in that they should have known Ohio State was going to come at them with guns blazing on both sides of the ball. The Buckeyes came out with fire in their eyes and never eased up. Lastly, the ‘Shoe was rockin’.

The Buckeye offensive line isn't so bad. They just aren't as bad as anyone would think. They can get it done.
@lvli04422 күн бұрын
The issue with the offensive line is mostly their inability to run to the left. Pass protection isn't that bad all-around. The right side is two great run blockers. It's just a matter of if they can hide the weakness or not. Michigan and Penn State were able to limit the offense bc their stars up front were able to take advantage. Tennessee just couldn't duplicate that bc they don't have a Graham, Grant, Durant, or Carter. Oregon could be a different problem if they can control the left side. Gonna be a good battle to watch.
