Split long pieces to jam into the hillside until it is established and secure. You could use those terraces for nursery for trees to transplant, or mountain plants maybe traditional medicinal or even heirloom food varieties. It just popped in my head to use the wood to make the terraces and also prevent erosion.

The way the trees fell around their house reminded me of Ivan when we lived in mobile home and the trees feel just like toothpicks all around our little mobile home and didn't touch it! It took us a whole day to get cut out of where we were staying and hr away to get back to our home that i was sure was going to be in a million pieces. When we arrived our little trailer on a hill still stood with only one shingle missing on the ground and all the trees laying all around. Our neighbors houses had exploded and parts of their house and belongings lay everywhere. I truly believe God heard ad answered every prayer i prayed that night. That little trailer, although we no longer live in it, still stands 20 yrs later today going strong! Still, i don't think that compared to Helene. I have never seen anything like it, especially in the Mountains...it's totally heartbreaking!

I'm guessing it's less a case of "this wood is no good" and more that there is SO much wood down everywhere that it's just not logistically feasible to transport and process it all before it starts decaying. Like sure. You can pick up and trim some logs for lumber, or firewood, or crafting...but how many can you gather in a week? A month? A year? Meanwhile, people don't want to be living in lumber yards. They want their homes back. It's not fair to make them sit on piles and piles of logs for years to come.
@fcukyou2_24 күн бұрын
People...I know yall prob mean well, but you have no idea what you're talking about. most of that lumber is useless if it's snapped and splintered. To get in there and salvage the good wood from the bad would be impossible. Your not gonna move the bed trees to get to the good ones, thats just not how logging works. Those trees are basically useless as lumber. Maybe you can salvage some and do something with it, like build a shed, if it's easily accessible but 99% of it will just rot in the ground where they sit. Also the lumber industry mainyl uses pine, which needs to be milled fairly quickly after falling bc it will start to degrade if left in the dirt. it will start to rot and get infected with bugs...

I was thinking the same thing… as long as there are some decent stewards of the dirt, the Appalachians are very fertile and yes, the land will recover in some time.

I work at a professional forestry organization in Asheville, NC. Those wondering why the wood isn’t salvageable…It is already expensive to log in the mountains mainly due to the terrain. A salvage logging operation is going to be even more expensive, because it’s even more difficult and dangerous. Loggers and buyers in this area are also only looking for certain species of trees of a certain size (oaks-maybe yellow-poplar of timber size). We don’t have a pulp market in this area, so they can’t be smaller trees. You also have to have at least 10 (ideally 20) acres of timber for a logger to even consider it worth his while. Getting a logger in here will come completely at the expense of the landowner.
@TheJttv25 күн бұрын
Im not even sure you would want to log the trees. It may be all thats holding the mountain together even if dead. They have a big mudslide issue in cali after the wildfires.
@PeggyHall-x2f25 күн бұрын
I'm not being a shit head - but if power is such an issue isn't the wood a viable source for energy? Does it take to long to dry? I'm sorry. I'm ignorant about all of this. I couldn't do it . I'm too old and in bad health. I probably wouldn't have survived it. I wish there was something I could do.

What is on the ground can be used for mulch and there is a company in the NE that uses wood fiber as insulation. They treat it with Boraid and it works really well. They will need to clear the land and replant trees.

Florida resident here, actually in Sarasota, the place that just took the eye of Milton, this is by far the worst hurricane season I have experienced in the 42 years that I have lived here. Hurricane Helene was so weird the way it rode up our coast and just literally flooded every town from here to the big bend and continued on up into the Carolinas at the strength it did. However, for us, Milton was much worse, and this was the first time I ever wondered, “Is this ever going to end?”. I don’t know what happened this year, but finding out about the dry ice experiment that was done on hurricanes in the 70s has really got me scratching my head. Before Helene and Milton came through we had a tropical storm that brought devastating flooding. I don’t know what is happening, but I do know that everything feels like the hurricanes got 10 times worse this season.

I suspect that a lot of those trunks that are broken off but still standing will recover somewhat and put out new limbs. The roots are still in the ground and will prosper the tree. Hopefully in just a few years you will see an amazing amount of recovery naturally. Get some azaleas, rhododendrons, and mountain laurel to plant. Go into areas where there was no destruction and dig up young trees to transplant on your hillsides.

Why did he let it happen in the first place?
@lindawilkes348325 күн бұрын
Don't know why God let it happen, but no denying He protected them. The govt sent this storm. Look up geoengineering and watch the video The Dimming by Dane Wigington. Weaponizing weather has been going on for decades. Operation Popeye was done back in Vietnam. Look into HAARP and DEW weapons, etc. Govt creates storms and steers them. Can cause fires, floods. hail drought, etc. Not natural. It's criminal what is done intentionally. Check out the Paradise fire and what really happened in Lahaina. But praying works, look at what happened to Milton that went from cat 5 to cat 2 or 3 ? before hitting FL. As Jesus prayed peace be still to a storm, as a Christian we have His authority to do the same. Hope you know that Jesus is real and loves you very much. God bless you all. Love and Shalom from GA.

I would set up camera mounts at various locations and take photos every week for the next N years. Documenting Mother Nature at work will be fascinating. Clear up where you need to but let the rest of the woodland rejuvenate by itself ? I suspect it will happen faster than you think ❤

Larger tree debris turn into charcoal for cooking and heating fuel and for filters that are needed for all the contamination in the valleys. Keep the small debris scattered and covering the ground to avoid erosion. Plant anything you can that's native and will grow quickly to secure the hills. Now you have room for a terraced garden?

There are microbusts that form inside hurricanes that are like mini tornados that take down trees.. that is why they are so dangerous.. it's not predictable where they will form or go. It's phenomenal to see this much damage that far inland...for this Gulf Coast resident.. but storms are a system and not just a dot.. and can cause damage anywhere they go.
