I feel like that 25% retained helped the ullmark trade. I think Boston wanted a 1st and a goalie to place as backup to swayman. And like u said only a handful of teams really needed goaltending. And if Detroit tried the same trade Boston would get husso. I think ullmarks cap hit will be pretty high going forward as well. Probably played a part

Scott Darling, I'd argue, is even worse. He got a 4 year deal to be the starter, and got ousted by a 35 year old Cam Ward one year, and then 36 year old Curtis McElhinney for the back up spot the next year, who was even picked up on waivers. From an isles fan, It’s gotta be the ladd contract from 2016. If isles never sign him, we wouldn’t have had 5.5 mil in essentially dead cap during the 2020 and 2021 ecf runs. We could’ve had a real contributor in the lineup. Even if we didn’t use that money on another ufa, we would’ve had enough money to resign Devon Toews. Only reason I say it’s worse than Louie’s is bc that deal only kept the nucks from competing for a playoff spot. For the isles, it not only kept them from getting over the Tampa hump, but it also shrank their contention window with having to give up a young all star level defenseman for next to nothing (we got the jj moser draft pick which was flipped a year later in the Ladd cap dump).

Most of the contracts I can agree. I would have said Milan Lucic instead of Louie Eriksson, but when we have the most infamous free agency class, there are so many arguments. But I disagree with 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2023. Patrick Marleau was good for the Leafs. Sure he was getting old and was past his prime, but still. To have Patrick Marleau??!! It is awesome. Even if he did nothing, it is still great to have him. The worst contract of 2017 was Karl Alzner. A 5 year, $4M per year for a 3rd pairing defenseman who does the bare minimum? It was terrible as soon as it was announced, and it got worse from there. He got sent to the minors 2 years into the contract, and was bought out the next year. He hasn't played since. Tyler Myers wasn't that bad with the Canucks. To me, the worst contract of 2019 was Brandon Tanev. 6 years, $3.5 million for a 4th liner. Sure, he did decent with the Penguins and the Kraken, but still. That is a contract given to Top 6 guys, not a bottom sixer. Philip Grubauer, I can understand. He sucked in the regular season, but his saving grace was his playoff performance with the Kraken, winning half of the games he played, a save percentage of over .900, and he was good enough to give the Seattle Kraken their first ever Stanley Cup series win, and to also push the series against Dallas to 7. I don't care if he was bought out, Barclay Goodrow's signing is still the worst, not only of 2021, but the worst contract in Rangers history. Trading for him was not bad. I was happy we got him. But I was pissed about the gross overpayment. Just like Brandon Tanev, you don't pay $3.6 million per year for 6 years to a 4th liner. It was terrible when it was announced. To be fair, he played his best hockey in the first 2 years, scoring over 30 points and at least 10 goals. It's good, but the only way this contract would be a winner is it the first 2 years happened throughout the rest of the contract. But this past season was his worst as he only scored 4 goals, 8 assists, and 12 points. Even with his shockingly god performance in the playoffs (6 goals, 2 assists, and 8 points, 2ND IN GOAL SCORING!), it was time for him to go. Even if he did well, he was the main reason why we had to let players like Frank Vatrano, Andrew Copp, Patrick Kane, Vladimir Tarasenko, and others go, because we couldn't afford them thanks to Goodrow. That contract should have gone to Pavel Buchnevich, you know, A TOP 6 WINGER THE RANGERS DESPERATELY NEEDED EVER SINCE HE LEFT??!!! Thank god the Sharks took Goodrow from us. Now we have the cap space needed to keep Ryan Lindgren and Braden Schneider. And it is more helpful since Igor, Lafreniere, and Miller need contracts as well. Even though I will miss Goodrow, getting rid of him was the right move. As for 2023, I can agree that Justin Holl's contract is bad. He was barely around and he, along with Jeff Petry, Ben Chiarot, and Ollie Maata were terrible on the blue line, and if it wasn't for Moritz Seider and Jake Walman (who shouldn't have been traded, especially for FUTURE CONSIDERATIONS!!), the Red Wings would have the worst defense this season. While Holl's is bad, to me, the worst contract is Pierre Engvall. If the Tanev and Goodrow signings are problematic, then Engvall's contract is as well. But it is even worse when Engvall is signed $3 million for 7 YEARS!! 7 years for a 4th liner. I was watching Free Agency last year, and as soon as that signing was announced, I was laughing so hard (because it's the Islanders). I still find it funny, even to this day.
