Concept fly i am trying to make. Material used is highly hydrophobic and light so it may be good option for wings. There are some obvious downsides and probably some other characteristics i havent considered. You are more than welcome to share your thoughts.
Cheers

Hello Vladimir just wanted you to know that Davie has a video on how he uses his wax… it’s titled “How I prepare my Wax for tying flies with Davie McPhail” He’s used this method for years and yes now Kelly Galloup has started using it and giving credit to Davie for his style of use. Warm water is the trick to soften it and small pinches of wax makes it convenient to apply on your finger knuckle. Hope that helps. Everyone should follow these guys, because like yourself they are precise with the facts and they won’t steer you wrong. Thanks for your tutorial.

You won't believe me... I had the exact same idea to try using kapok as a wing material, but didn't get to try it out at the vice, as I figured that the fibers would be too short for the purpose. You just proved me wrong. That's got to be a game changer! Love the body technique as well. Thanks for sharing! Best regards.

My fly catches where others fail. Using size 12's and 16's:- I though on such a bare fly, why not make the hook part of the fly? So using super fine 'invisable' sewing thread I wrapped a few turns near the eye. Then taking Gutermans Sulky CA02776 multicolored holo thread I tied this in and wrapped it to just round the bend near the barb, and back round to where it started. A dab of super glue over the whole wrap keeps in place. Now takind a 1/2" bunch of very fine polypropylene black (or white) fibres pinch these and swiftly flash one end with a lighter to hold together and tie on near the eye; with the fibres backwards.Trim and finish of with a dab of super glue. I use a 5ft length of 12lb floating mono with 6ft of 8lb fluro carbon tippet. With a good flotation even if sunk it pops back to the surface. If a fish takes it DO NOT strike wait until the line tightens up. If it does'nt, retrieve the line very slowly, and often will take the fly again - viciously!

So this is kapok material, correct ? Like the Semperfli kapok material ? I really enjoyed this content, I’m looking through my tying materials now to see what colors I have. I’ve been looking for a material for dry flies that will float in riffles. I like to use cdc for rough water dries but I’m always looking for something better. Thanks!!!!!

Excellent video. Natural Kapok is sold as pet bedding. A huge bag for £3. In fact a ten year supply. I don't get the Semperfli price at all. Short staple length limits its use, but that's not a problem with smaller hooks (say #16 and smaller). Emergers on pupa hooks with a tuft of combed kapok, are a winner. I certainly wouldn't use kapok on emerger bodies. It dubs well for straight shank dry flys, and it can be used in a split thread, twisted (like CDC) to form a segmented body (that may need to be trimmed to shape).
@Oholisfliesandfishing
@Oholisfliesandfishing Ай бұрын
Natural is super buoyant. Dyed onr is less. So when dubbed tightly it will sink with hook. It becomes less buoyant with dye process.

Brilliant! I bought some Semperfli Kapok dubbing ages ago but it was so expensive I daren't use it! Now I have good reason to go broke! I love cdc and use it on all flies from nymphs to dry's, but I never find it as hydrophobic as I'd hope, I find once its been under water a couple of times or got a bit chewed by trout it needs drying and treating like many other materials. I'll talk to my bank manager and try kapok!

It doesn't take to marker very well and seemed to mess with the fibers. Traditionally kapok has always been considered a near impossible material to dye. Semperfli has learned how to dye this stuff and it's consistent I have no idea how they did this wizzardly.

@@Oholisfliesandfishing what dye did you use? When I dyed mine they lost the floating ability completely. I tried Rites a textile dye with limited results.
