Cover the mirrors and don your kippah, it’s time to pay your respects to Lilibit. Guy Branum brought some rugelach to share with Zachary Schiffman as they decide if the British or the Jewish have better food.

Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us-one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

Fun fact, the Vulcan Salute🖖 is actually just a Jewish Kohanim’s gesture for a blessing. Leonard Nimoy (who is Jewish) had seen it as a child, decided that the Vulcans should have their own hand signal, and decided to use that.

As a secular humanist whose partner is Jewish, I've tried to make charoset for Passover. I was very excited and proud of it..... Cut to my partner informing me that what I really made, was a delicious fruit salsa. Was it charoset? No. Does he now ask for fruit salsa for Passover? Yes.

No fish and chips, no mushy peas, no Yorkshire pudding, no Sunday roast, no cottage or shepherd's pie, no bubble and squeak, no beef Wellington, no Colman's, no chicken tikka masala???? No kugel, matzo ball soup, latkes, sufganiyot, kibbeh, pickles, challah, or babka?? Look, I'm a gentile American with minimal skin in the game, culturally speaking. I am, however, a person who loves food and eats a lot of it. So I demand a new bracket!

My brother lives on Vancouver Island, and when he visits me, (metro NY area) his first meal, is always,a pumpernickel bagel, with a schmeer, and lox or white fish, with a slice of tomato and Red onion. He says the closest thing he can get out there, is a bread donut, and smoked salmon.

instead of Scones, you need to eat a biscuit made with and slathered in butter. i have an amazing recipe for cheese scones where you grate the butter into the batter - they are not dry. Bagels are great too and authentic bagels are made correctly (boiled then baked) and taste better.

Yes, Worcestershire sauce *can* last for years, but I use that shit constantly, never had a bottle last longer than a couple months. Put it in your eggs or hashbrowns, your life will be happier. Anyway, I'll be trying Worchestershire on a bagel (yes, I keep them in my freezer, sorry Jon) tomorrow, because why the hell not?

NICE. Worcestershire sauce is it breakout star and MVP of my mom's Crispix Mix, which she used to crank out by the bucketload every Christmastime. Did you know that Worcestershire sauce, in generous enough quantity, is actually spicy? I know now. Thanks, Mom ♥ So, if you make your own party mix, *always* use too much Worcestershire.

I don't even know what seder dinner is . . .but I hate English breakfast. Who eats baked beans ever, let alone in the morning? 🤢. I'm from Boston, but I hate Dunkin Donuts . . only the inbreds like it. It's watery coffee and stale donuts. Their bagels are just white bread. Boston actually had very good coffee and local coffee roasters. I went to seattle, but thought Boston was better (despite our shitty DD). The "Boston bros" are dying out . . .not fast enough 😂. But some of us are okay. We just can't afford to live in NYC.

Using ketchup can mean more than one thing, if you're using good quality ketchup, it's a much different animal than the weird stuff they sell in stores that's probably mostly water, sugar and food colouring, at least when you boil the shit out of a half bushel of tomatoes to make a few cups of ketchup, you know what's in it. Similarly, while I generally like whole mustard seed in my cooking, I find the dark yellow (because it's been cooked heavily) mustard is kinda gross, thus I didn't fault Obama for wanting non-garbage food mustard (unfortunately my family keeps buying the bad mustard, and trying to sneak it into my food), I'm not a raccoon, I should have good mustard with my good food. I can definitely taste hot food, but I can also eat some shockingly hot stuff without problem, my limit is straight raw Carolina Reaper peppers, too much of a good thing! I even get a mild buzz out of really hot stuff, which I like because I have a really addictive personality. The winner should have to move up into a new bracket and take on a more serious cuisine, just like those weird leagues with tiers that shove teams down to lower tiers when they stink too bad, Jewish food should have to take on some bigger opponents now! Maybe American, I think anything continental European would be too good, and anywhere warm has fantastic food usually (though there are always dishes that are awful to non-locals for a variety of reasons), I think American is a fair matchup, they took in the best of everywhere, then battered it and deep fried it, and served it with a 'sauce' that's sweeter than the mocked ketchup used on said briskets. You could do the opposite of this and have French and Indian fight it out, I think French is going to be more consistent to the European palate, while Indian shoots the moon now and then and might win anyways, even with some really strange flavour combinations (for a European). THAT SAID, they eat bigass snails in France, so arguably nothing in Indian food is quite that... challenging. My favourite thing about Worcestershier sauce was that it was invented by someone trying to recreate the culinary joy that is found in Indian food, it wasn't good enough to take over India, they had to try to make their own curry as a liquid concentrate. I've eaten a lot more bagel by volume though, so maybe it deserved the win?

My sister doesn't like Jewish food. When she was in Israel they crossed the border to get Palestinian food because the Jewish food didn't have any flavor. A lot of Palestinian food is the same but the Jewish side they remove all the flavor. It was the same for British food when they occupied Indian. When the British came back home to the UK they couldn't stand British food because it didn't have flavor.
@Emanon...
@Emanon... Жыл бұрын
Pretty sure Palestinian food was there before Israel appropriated it and added a "kh" sound to make it more Hebrew. Also, Jewish food is not a thing. Jews in the Middle East had never heard of a bagel or gefilte fisch, just like Jews in Poland had never eaten a dish with eggplant or chickpeas in it... It's telling a story that was never real.

@Ozymandi_as
@Ozymandi_as Жыл бұрын
It's difficult to give advance warning of jokes without neutering them of any humour. A show from Jon Lovett about Jewish food is bound to feature Jewish jokes, and his humour is often somewhat transgressive - so perhaps some transgressive Jewish jokes were to be expected? I don't think his intention is to offend, however, or trivialise either Ann Frank or the Holocaust. Humour is one way that humans tame fear and grief, often in extreme situations. I saw a play a few years ago called Bad Jews, by Joshua Harmon, which examined Jewishness through the eyes of three family members whose different attitude to their Jewish heritage are brought to the fore in the wake of the death of an elder, who happened to have survived Auschwitz. It was deadly serious in its intent, but whip smart and incredibly, tear-jerkingly funny. I also read recently a short story by David Sedaris, which was set in the Ann Frank house in Amsterdam, which he was visiting as a tourist with his partner. He manages to bring whimsy into this solemn setting in such an absurd way that she herself might have laughed, in the way that children do when best behaviour is expected. There's a recording of the author reading it to an audience, somewhere on KZbin, and they certainly appreciated it. So, Lovett is not the first to make jokes about those particular subjects, and he won't be the last. For many Jews, one of their proudest traditions is their sense of humour.

Most people are not vegan, either in the Jewish diaspora or Britain. Are you going to rant at them in perpetuity? Scolding people for making jokes about food is not really worth the effort, I imagine, unless you like being angry all the time.
