Oil Boiler Keeps Tripping out on Safety. troubleshooting

Please note a mistake in the video. There are two DIFFERENT parts. There is a CAD EYE that I’m showing you at 3:15 and mistakenly calling a “cad cell relay”. The cad eye is the actual sensor that detects light to ensure there is a flame burning. It is connected to a RELAY. That relay can be referred to as a “control”, “safety” or “cad cell relay”. It’s a box to which the cad eye is attached and its job is to shut down the boiler if the cad eye does not sense flame. In my case the control or cad cell relay is the thing that was “out on safety “ and is made by Honeywell. Sorry for the mistake.

No worries I have both parts anyway and I first plan to add a brand new Cell eye before I add the cad cell relay

I keep a new cad cell, oil filter, aquastat, and a primary control as well near my furnace because they always fail at the worst time. What I would pay for an emergency service fee is more than these parts.

Cad cell in NY is $50.00 bucks....what solvent can i use to clean my cad cell?

Are you talking about the safety relay? Or the cad eye? It’s under $20 to replace. Here www.supplyhouse.com/Westwood-Products-E80-1-Complete-Flame-Detector-with-Cad-Cell-Eye-30-leads-S-Bracket. Also I answered the cleaning question somewhere but can’t find it now. I clean mine with windex. Or any other window cleaner I have around. If it’s really sooty or dirty, you probably need to adjust the flame. Mine usually is a little dirty but that’s it.

@@Samlol23_drrich Thanks for the reply I forgot I can buy just the Cadcell eye😉👍. Your channel is soo GREAT in the way you are helping people save money. Friday I will work on my boiler cause I am off. I already have one of those parts not the Cadcell eye which I know is under 20 bucks. I will first try the Cadcell replacement and see if it still shuts off then replace the other part if it does

Just had my furnace cleaned & told the guy my control tripped. He tested the transformer with a screwdriver said it was good. Since then it tripped 2 more times. Now he wants to make another service call says maybe the transformer motor ect. The furnace is running & this happens now & then. When I reset the control I press it one & it clicks fast. I';m thinking the control is bad? It a Honeywell. It does have a relay solenoid on the oil pump. Any thoughts?

Im not in the business but I would replace the control. It could be a lot of things. I'm sure the guy checked oil flow during your service and if it was flow it would happen all the time

Dont change the primary control , they dont go bad that often , pump seal will let the oil drift back to the oil tank and let a little air go through the nozzle assembly its most likely on the oil side eratic flame

Great vid thank you. I would have gone for the nozzle first with a filter that dirty. So you growing special tomato's in that tent?

Thanks! I've had my share of failures with those controls. I think they last maybe 3 years for some reason. And I've never needed to change the nozzle. When we moved in we had the outdoor tank pulled and placed 2 new 275s inside. We've had the same reputable company deliver oil and do the yearly service since then. So the oil quality isn't too bad. Plus a new nozzle every September. (But I do have some spares just in case!) Ps no funny stuff in that grow tent. Everything is legal recreationally now. I grow Trinidad scorpion and ghost peppers in there. They take for ever to get going. I can keep it 85 and very humid so they are ready to go outside in June. Thanks for commenting.

When replacing the primary is it plug and play or do you have to program it?

I'm definitely not an expert but it depends on your system and which safety you get. I don't have any delay or a solenoid. And the safety was plug and play. Nothing more than in the video. 3 wires and done.( Just need to push the red reset button when you power it on the first time). I THINK that even if you have a delayed oil valve/solenoid they are mostly not programmed any more than what's standard. I would watch a bunch of Steve Lavimonieres videos on the subject. Good luck

Nah. For every one like me there are 10 who are clueless. I learned out of necessity. Boiler and both ACs are original to my ‘89 house. Nobody would touch the leaking disconnected tankless gasket. Nobody would replace the falling apart combustion chamber liner. Nobody wanted to replace a Schrader core on my R22 system. I don’t blame anyone. They think they touch it it becomes their problem even though I said it wouldn’t be. So I learned to do the stuff myself. Next go round in life I would do HVAC. It’s better than what I do now. And I’m a friggin dentist. Thanks for commenting. I’ve got great respect for what you do. I never ever helicopter and tip really well any time anyone does any service.

These videos break the fear of doing it yourself which I have been doing for a few years. What solvent can I use to clean the head or sensor face of my cad cell

@@HandsONreviews4u thanks! Before heating season I usually clean the face of my cad cell with whatever I have lying around like windex or other bathroom cleaner. Just to take any dirt or soot off. Couldn’t hurt. I wouldn’t use acetone or anything that would make the plastic cloudy (although acetone is my go to for almost everything that’s NOT plastic. Thanks for the comment

You can't tell me I know everything about oil burners I've been working on them since the 70s you its proper name is primary control, you can calk it , cadcell control, safety control , when it drops out in safety its a flame orobken because the cad cell senses the flame , nozzle, cracked porcelain on electrodes , improper gap setting on electrode , Beckett flame retention burners turn at 3450 rpm double what the convention burners turn ,sunray burners are the best

@@henrykennedy1120 there is no way of knowing what the problem is until you check everything like you said. And I did, and it was the primary control. I changed it and it worked. I’m not sure what your point is, what I’ve been maintaining my old dog for the last 14 years I’ve lived in this house. I can take it apart and put it back together if I had to. I have spare parts including motors, couplers you name it I got it. I ran a new zone to my garage for a Modine heater, including soldering and wiring the zone valve, changed out the circulator, aquastat, and replaced the combustion chamber. I’m no Steve Lavimoniere, but not afraid to get my hands dirty. If I had to do again, I would go into HVAC, including oil burner maintenance, repair and install. I do appreciate you taking the time to comment . Thank you.

I can solve problems with oil burners with my eyes closed and I've solved them on the phone with my techs just saying oil burners are simple so are boilers I was raised in the industry guess that why it easy to me
