The cut out jug was absolutely Brilliant!

You'll also notice that the insert (to let the oil out) has a nipple on it which allows you to put on a hose and direct the oil straight into the pan. ZERO mess!

Dude! Thank you so much for the funnel tip. I was due when I found your video and never had time to get a ronin, so I'll grab one for my next oil change. But I built a funnel and had minimal spill on my sway bar and nothing on the floor! Hell yeah! Thank you so much 🤘🤘

Thanks a lot!!! Just got mine F150 - 5.0. Also, help me with the drain plug adapter you have. Also, the made home funnel is an awesome idea. Again thanks a lot for the video.!!

You got SO lucky with the oil not overfilling the homemade funnel AND the drain plug not plugging the homemade funnel

Great tip with jug deflector. I would recommend a plastic drop cloth just in case. Also note that 2018 F150 oil capacity is 8.85 quarts. Thanks for sharing your video!

The prob with the Ronin or better yet a Fumoto with the ability to hook up a hose and drain directly into a container like a jug with the turn of a dial or flip of a valve is this. The depth of the replacement fixed plug going into the oil pan! Some vehicles you leave 1/2 litre of used oil in the pan. Unless you remove the Ronin/Fumoto completely so the trapped oil can drain. Which defeats the purpose of installing one at $$$. Not an issue with an OE plug you remove completely. Everything drains out. Like the idea of the cut out jug though. Control the flow/velocity directly into a pan by how far you back off the plug initially then switch to greasing components while the oil does a slower more controlled drain till you can pop the plug out completely. Then deal with the filter and ALWAYS fill the new one at least 1/2 full with clean oil.

The 3.5 eco boosts are terrible. Mainly due to the filter being in that same location making a giant mess, even with that catch trey. I did find a work around for that- get a quart jug, cut the front part of it off (while leaving the cap on) and Stick it in that oil drain tray. Slowly back the filter off and it will drain into the jug instead of onto the plastic drain catch. Put the new filter on, and very gingerly remove the quart jug to avoid spillage. No mess from the filter if you do it properly

Personally, I don't see the big deal with the factory drain plug. When you remove it all you need is a pair of pliers, no screw driver. Instead of letting the plug fall out just hold it partially in the hole so you can regulate the amount of oil flow. That will prevent the "huge mess" everyone complains about. Of course you need to be a little more careful if the oil is extremely hot. According to NAPA's online guide, the oil only needs to be at about 100 degrees when you drain it, which is not hot enough to burn you. Letting the vehicle cool for 20-30 minutes after driving will get you there. If the engine is cold, start it and let it run for 2-3 minutes before draining the oil. When I did mine I didn't remove the fill plug or dipstick until the majority of the oil had already drained. That should also minimize the mess. I used three drain pans - a large one under the drain plug and two smaller ones under the oil filter. No drips anywhere on the floor.

Did this exact thing and was able to control the flow. Though my arm got tired from holding it while all ~8-9ish quarts came out. Used a 45deg long-nose/long-handle

I do the same thing with mine I do not take the oil filler cap off and and warm it up just enough to put it on the ramps go back in the house watch a movie or drink coffee come back until there's none dripping

Thank you so much for your opinion. I'm sure other grouchy misers will benefit from your contrary response. The point was to introduce a new plug system with an insert one could put a short piece of hose onto to help keep the job clean. You're method is correct and so is this method.

Thank you for posting this. Those plastic oil and transmission pans on the 5.0 are the main reasons why I won't upgrade to a Mustang GT. WTF, Ford!

I'm in the market for a new truck. I have an 07 Gmc Sierra with aImost 300k miles on it. I guess I'm just old school. Still have original oil plug and oil pan. All metal. Never had to worry about any plastic stuff like this. Love the ecoboost engines that Ford puts out. The 5.0 is solid. If Ford wanted to make some budget cuts, don't do that to important engine components like the oil pan and plug. I would feel a lot better about these vehicles if that was in place. Not in a hurry. These are the things us men take into account before spending 40k to 50k on a vehicle. Buyer beware.

@@Bushy556 I understand. Wished there were options for this. Too many problems with these pans. Maybe it's the so called Ford authorized silicone that is the problem. Not a fan.

Ford started using cylinder deactivation in the 5.0 on their trucks in 2021. Talk about screwing up a good thing.

The simpler the vehicle, the better. One doesn't buy a truck for great mpgs. The 1500 diesels are a different animal. Great mpgs for a truck. How long will engine last? Is big question.

These plastic oil pans are notorious for leaking. I would NEVER buy a vehicle with a plastic oil pan and a plug which must be replaced at each oil change. What was Ford thinking?

If you change to that drain plug or any other that is not OEM and it falls out or gets knocked off you will have no warranty. May be much safer to leave the stock plug in.
