Here is a DIY for an oil change on a 2015 to 2020 F150. It is the same for years, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 with the 5.0 V8 engine. The oil that I am using is Motorcraft 5w20 with the FL-500S oil filter.
I try and change my oil every 5000-7500 miles with the ford recommended oil. In the new F150s with V8s you don't need any tools to remove the drain plug so it is much easier.

I don’t care what modern engineers say, you always change the oil 3500 to 4000 miles if you use full synthetic. The engine will thank you and it will last much longer. It will also cause you less headaches. I’m glad I learned from an old mechanic.

it all depends on your driving and if you have oil coolers . full synthetic can definitely last longer than 5 k . that 5k is a safe estimate

I just purchased a use 2018 F-150 5.0 and need to change the oil. Overall, your video was very helpful. A couple of comments. I've been changing my own oil for over 60 years (still do). A couple of things that I do with each oil change are 1.) After removing the old oil filter, make certain that the old oil filter gasket is not still on the engine block, and 2.) I prefill the new oil filter about half full with new oil. I understand that the filter is horizontal, but with it only half full, you can put it back on with no spillage. Other than those two comments, I appreciated your video. I also just purchased a "permanent" oil plug (Ronin) for it that helps you to better control the flow of the old oil when you drain it. Will try it with in the next couple of weeks. I use Mobil 1 full synthetic 5W20 oil. I've been a Ford guy my entire life. Love your stable of vehicles.

Hey Tom, great purchase on the 18 F150. You'll love it. Those are some good additional tips. I've definitely seen my filter gaskets come off on other vehicles but not the F150, so it is a great idea to check. I'll have to check out that Ronin oil plug/drain. I think I've looked at it in the past. Seems like it would make it easier and less of a mess. Glad to hear you are another Ford guy!!! Thanks for stopping by.

@@markwarnberg9504 At this point it really is a race to the bottom between the domestics. Unbelievable and total crap. It still amazes me how people keep buying this junk. My cousins husband is a Ford truck guy. He bought a 2018 f150 with the 2.7. In the first 40k miles it needed front timing cover resealed, front and rear diffs leaked, rear main seal leak, and front end work. I believe the bill would have been 4500 if it was not under warranty. He does not beat on his truck, he is a physician and tows their camper to the mountains probably 4 times a year. Other than that it’s used for kid hauling duty and going to work. He asked my opinion, I said sell it and get a tundra.

Scotty Kilmar has been a good source. Honda and Toyota have always been a no brainer but it seems even they have been having problems with the newer models. The Tundra has had some issues with RECALLS! so do a little research before buying. Quality seems to be something of the past. So far I am happy with my 2015 SUZUKI VITARA, 135,000km, no problems, never been in the shop other than worn brakes and tires.

Awesome site. They really are garbage filters now. I've always gone Mobil 1 or K+N full synthetic filters if they go on sale. Fuel, tranny, air I like Wixx (sold by Napa as "Napa Gold") or Mahle. Post a longer comment above but I saw Fram and had to post this asap. Good luck and happy wrenching.

I usually have someone else change the oil on my F-150 mainly because I hate to deal with the old oil. Overall it is nice to see things are pretty easy though. Not quite as easy as it is on my old 67 Mustang with the inline 6. You can almost do the whole job from the top and never have to get under the car. The drain plug is the only thing you cannot easily reach from the top. I also see you do not prefill your filter. I typically do not do that either unless the vehicle has been sitting awhile.
@SmackeysGarage
@SmackeysGarage 3 жыл бұрын
I used to have the dealer do it when I was working from an office, exactly for the same reason you do. I typically bring my old oil back to Advanced Auto or someplace similar around here. That's nice you can get almost the entire 67 done with above the car. I refill the 1969 Filter when I replace it because it's vertical. The F150 has a horizontal filter. I can only imagine the mess it would make....

5-30 or 10-30 is better. That's what I am putting in for sunny California. The number 5w in 5w-30 (or 5w-20) is only for starting your truck in the freezing winter weather, then the multi weight oil transitions to 30 weight when your engine is at normal operating temperature. Historically 30 was the original oil weight. The governments are "asking" the manufacturers to lower the operating oil weight in an attempt to increase gas mileage. Mechanics say it is leading to engines wearing out sooner. That's why I say 5w-30 will always be better.

The plastic plug is one of the weak points in that system. Who in their right mind would design a plastic plug? FYI, I've had my oil changed at least five times at the dealership (they were free when I bought my 2020 F150 5.0). When I look over the service sheet I see they replace the plastic plug each time. I asked about this and was told the plugs are designed to be replaced, not reused. Since I started doing my own oil changes, I purchased and installed an aluminum plug. The entire plug isn't removed when I drain the oil, only an interior cylinder that unscrews. Drain the oil then screw the cylinder back in. I checked with a friend who is a DM for one of those big companies that offer the quick oil changes. He confirmed they replace plastic oil pan drain plugs each time.

That's interesting. I've never heard of anyone doing that. I ordered a new drain plug to check out. I do like the newer design that has the socket for a ratchet to stick in.

@@SmackeysGarage Totally agree. I did call my son to verify and he confirmed, the company he works for replaces all plastic drain plugs. He added some times they use a red plug, which is an after market version. I'm installing my new drain plug next week (the aluminum one) but I will inspect the old and see if there is any difference between it and another plastic one I purchased from Ford to have on hand. Just watched your shock video and ordered Bilstein 5100 to replace my rear shocks.

I've heard good things about the aluminum plug (Ronan I think). You'll really like the 5100s. I was surprised at home much of a difference they made for my truck. Keeps the rear much more planted than the stocks.

You have to add some oli into the new filter like 100mg befor installation

You can, it is just a pain on these vehicles with the filter being installed horizontal. I typically do not do it that way and have not had an issue.

No you don’t. It’s logical for diesels but not gassers. I was a lube tech at Toyota and we never prefilled filters, unless it was a diesel.

Ford has a feature for that. Hold gas pedal to the floor, crack it over for a little. It fills the oil filter

I'd go to Autozone or advanced auto and enter in the part number and see if it will fit. It shows it fits my truck.
