Well you inspired me to do my own oil change that I had been putting off because I thought that oil plug would spell oil everywhere. I did back the plug out slowly and it was easy to control the flow of oil coming out didn’t spill a drop. And depending on how level of surface you have, the oil filter will spill a little bit to the front or to the back off of that silver pan attached to the cross member. Thanks!

See some haters on Supertech Walmart oil. It meets the same qualifications as the other oils. The most important thing on oil is to replace every 5K. Frequent oil changes are the secret to engine longevity. 10K oil changes 👎, 5K oil changes 👍, and any clean oil is better than dirty oil! Been a supertech oil user for 20+ years, never had an engine failure. Sold my son my ‘93 Silverado with 250,000 miles, he drove it to 385,000 miles on original engine, with no overhauls. Same for transmission. When he was done with it, he sold to some else. Supertech (and an assortment of brands) oil changes done at 5K intervals.

Interesting conversation, I enjoyed listening to it. Their clarifications/conclusions mirrored my own experience in the industry: To give your engine the best chance at a long, happy life, just run the right viscosity oil and change it at the proper interval (about every 3k miles for older engines, about every 5k for newer). Any argument beyond that, i.e. conventional vs synthetic, amsoil vs super tech, additives vs no additives...all of these topics are either splitting hairs, or they really only matter in specific scenarios.

Scotty Kilmer says the 5.0L oil consumption problem is a Ford class defect that Ford won't admit to. All of Ford's work arounds don't address or fix the real problem..... which is that Ford used an aluminum block on these 5.0 engines, and didn't sleeve the cylinders. They used a ceramic coating in these cylinders (to save a few pennies), and this coating is either failing or it isn't working as it's supposed to, thus causing the massive oil consumption problem.

A defect that Ford won't admit to? They literally have a TSB out on it. Not that it inspires confidence in Ford's reliability, but they've at least acknowledged it.

All Scotty Kilmer says has one assumption, that is you DON'T BABY your vehicle. For example, what leads to many transmission failures is you step on the brake pedal when waiting for traffic light. After years of this operation, the transmission will surely break down. If you put into neutral while waiting the light, and put back into drive when light turns green, I bet very few people will have transmission problems.

JUST CHANGE YOUR OIL REGULARLY ! people just don't care about oil change.....
@davidwalker7383 Жыл бұрын
The oil that came in your truck from the factory should have stayed in much longer than 2900 miles. (no less than 5000 miles) The break-in period is very important. The oil that came in your truck was the biggest part and most important of the break-in period. The oil put in new engines from the factory is break-oil. Extremely crucial for the piston rings to have that oil for proper seating. Doing the correct break-in on an engine will prevent blow-by which causes oil consumption. As an engine machinist of 30 years... DO NOT DRAIN BREAK-IN OIL TOO EARLY
@saltrock96424 жыл бұрын
My 2018 with 34,000 miles is in the middle of an “oil consumption” test. I must add 2 qts after 1500 miles from day one. Got the run around and fed BS until I finally read the procedure Ford put out which acknowledges the issue. It was a ford dealers shop bulletin. Step 14 says to change engine, send old engine in for analysis. Some people are getting “lemon law” judgements and trading them back to dealer. Look it up, it’s a real issue. Ford is my favorite but the 2018 5.0 is of very poor design.

My 2020 F-150 5.0 has that same problem. They already performed the TSB for it and it didn’t help. I’m going to start putting oil stabilizer in it.

Oil weight has no correlation to engine size. Why would you think that just because it's a V8 it needs 15w-40? (I know you didn't say that) Engineers specify oil weight that will lubricant the small nooks and crannies of certain internal engine parts best. That was a huge issue with 5.4 tritons. They would start ticking because people were putting heavier weight oil. The timing chain tensioner needed a certain psi to operate right and was using the oil as its hydraulic fluid. Because people were using thicker weights the psi wasn't right causing failures.
@christopherrichards1025 Жыл бұрын
The early tensioners had poorly designed gaskets and blew out causing low oil pressure and eventually destroying the guides, cams and the rest of the engine. Nothing to do with the weight of the oil. The only reason for the 5W-20 recommendation was to meet gas milage standards. They ran fine on heavier weight oil.

On my german vehicles I either use castrol or liqui moly. On my domestic vehicles, I use castrol, royal purple, or valvoline. Honestly most oils nowadays are so darn good that as long as they say SN or SN PLUS on the back, they're good for basically any gasoline vehicle. Sure some are better than others, but the differences are almost negligible from oil to oil if you're not driving like a maniac.

I use mobil 1 0w40 full synthetic oil for all my vehicles. In hot summer, it won't dilute due to the heat, and in cold winter it flows well. 5w20 in my eyes, is water. The only reason many manufacturers recommend 5w20 or this is the only type of oil "approved", is because this super thin oil will help achieve better gas mileage in their test, which is purely political and bureaucratic crap. The 5.0 v8 generates so much heat that the 5w20 of course can't handle, so that's why many people complain about oil consumption problems. I have Japanese cars, German cars, and with no exception, mobil 1 0w40 works the best. If I had a performance car like BMW M3, I would go for 10w50. But for non-performance vehicles, 0w40 will be the best choice. BTW, I don't even take a look at manufacturer manual stuff, because I know it must be bullshit.

Don't worry about the oil drain plug being "cheap" looking. It was all engineered to be as it was. Much better off replacing the inexpensive factory oil plug every 1 or 2 oil changes than having to change the o rings on a metal plug that will end up stripping out the plastic oil pan and creating a leak that will ruin your engine.
