In todays video we look at how to perform a basic service on a 2003-2009 Subaru Outback, with 2.5L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder (EJ253) petrol engine. Other models with this same engine include 2003-2007 Liberty and Legacy.
We cover the basic tools, parts and steps that should be followed for changing out below components, which should be changed at every service interval:
- Engine oil
- Engine oil filter
- Air filter

Parts used:
Subaru 15208AA100 oil filter x1 (alternative is Ryco Z436)
Subaru 16546AA090 air filter x1 (alternative is Ryco A1527)
Subaru 11126AA000 oil drain plug gasket x1
Castrol Edge Full Synthetic 10W-30* 5L engine oil x1 (4.0L required)
* Subaru Owners’ Manual specifies 4.0L of API SM (or above) grade oil. Under general driving conditions, the Owner’s Manual specifies three options for engine oil viscosity, SAE 5W-30 (preferred), 10W-30 and 10W-40. 10W-30 was used here (shown) due to climate conditions and relatively high mileage of this vehicle.
Tools used:
12mm and 17mm sockets
Socket wrench to suit above, with extension
Ryco RST202 (67mm / 14 flute) oil filter cup socket
Torque wrench
Flathead screwdriver
Oil drain pan (minimum 5L)
Funnel
Paper towels or rags
Safety glasses and nitrile gloves are recommended
