good video. I found out the pros who did our before we bought lost one of the 12mm bolts and stripped out another 12mm with power tools they were likely using. The breaker bar made my job a lot easier. It took my some time, as its a bit awkward getting the filter housing off with the skid plate hanging down. I did it, but needed a little tub to catch the oil as I moved out of the way, to allow the skid to drop far enough to drain to main drain pan.

I simply drive up the four ramps. I position the ramps at the front edge of the tire and just drive up "slowly" and when I feel resistance I put in the park. For drive train service, 4 ramps . For oil change just front ramps. I have two Rhinos and 2 Harbor freights. HFs goes in the back and Rhinos on front. Same height for both.

Oil filter cap threads on all engines are designed to be self-tightening from the vibrations coming off the engine. Which is why the manual always says to hand tighten.

it is a pain to put the mental cover back with the 4 bolts. last year I tried my best and only put 2 bolts back on. this time, I found a local technicition and I brought my own oil/filter. he had to use some thread repair kit to repair the threads of the 4 holes before he can put the 4 new bolts back. I bought 4 new bolts from ebay.

There is a kind of "dimple" in the center of the front skid plate that is reinforced and designed as a single lift point for the front of the vehicle. It's the only hole where the surrounding metal extends downward maybe 1/4-1/2". Raise the front of the vehicle using this point, place your jack stands at the frame rails, then remove the jack so you can remove the skid plate for access to the oil filter housing. For the rear, use the bottom of the rear diff for this purpose.

Thanks brother, I got a wix oil filter. It came with a small O ring and a small piece of tubular plastic. Any idea what that’s for? Other vehicles I’m guessing? Also, my WIX oil filter didn’t come with a crush washer, so if someone else is doing this, they need to put a new crush washer on the oil pan bolt. Spec says 30 ft/lb.
@PlatoonGarage
@PlatoonGarage Жыл бұрын
Not sure honestly. I know the Toyota filter has a small plastic piece that helps drain oil from the filter, maybe that's it
@drw1926
@drw1926 Ай бұрын
The small o-ring is for the bolt to drain the filter housing if you choose to do so, prior to removing the filter housing. It's not required, but it does simplify things a bit by draining most of the oil out of the oil filter housing prior to removal. The small o-ring replaces the one you'll find on the filter housing drain bolt.

If your oil filter cap is difficult to remove (as yours was) Motivx says to use a 27 mm socket (instead of the ⅜ inch extension by itself) along with a breaker bar. Less likely to damage something. I see you had the breaker bar (not sure about the 27 mm socket). Actually, on the box that the OEM Toyota filter comes in, Toyota says not to use tools to remove the o-ring. Seems a bit anal to me but it's easily done without a pick or screwdriver... kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYOUfICEZt6maaM The plastic housing is fine as long as it isn't over-torqued which will lead to cracking it eventually. Even the aluminum oil filter cap gas been broken by some folks. Don't let bigfoot change you oil 😉. 18 ft.lbs of torque is all it calls for. That's not a lot.

Great video. I'd like to piont out another benefit of doing the job yourself. It is possible to drain the oil by removing a plate that covers the oil drain plug. This can be done in 5 minutes. The bulk of the job for the oil change is removing the 2 undercarraige plates which are, in fact a magor pain in the dick, to get to the filter. When my 5 free oil changes were used up on my new Lexy I thought I'd give it a go and save a little money. If you could have seen th condition of the oil filter upon removal, I believe you would agree with me that it had probably never been changed by the service crew.
