All my life, my dad used Fram Filters on all his vehicles. He maintained and rebuilt his own engines. So he put a lot of hard work and money into his cars and trucks and Fram Filters is what he chose to put in them. I followed his lead and I have put Fram Filters in all my vehicles for the past 30 years. Not one single issue or problem. The standard STP filter has changed from Korea to China and fractionally smaller and has a slight twisted filter medium. On these new filters I've also seen 2 filter mediums disconnected by small tears near the endcaps after oil changes. My oil antidrainback valve seal failed and could tell by the ratcheting sound when starting without oil leaks and oil at proper level.

I used the M1-110A in my 2006 Nissan Armada, with 7 quarts of Castrol full synthetic 5W-30. I am running at about 5540 miles, and I’m not going to say the oil looks brand new, but it looks pretty good for being over 5000 miles. Funny thing, I went to Auto Zone today to drop off some used motor oil, and I figured I would get the filter there. Looked at that &15.00 price tag and took a 2 minute drive to Walmart and paid $9.97. I new it was going to be more expensive at Auto Zone, however, I was thinking $1 or $2 maybe, BUT $5.00 DIFFERENCE ?! ?! ?! That’s RIDICULOUS.

I used the basic Fram Extra Guard oil filter with full synthetic oil with 5,000 miles of use, which took me roughly 5-6 months. I did the oil analysis with Blackstone Laboratories and they stated the oil filter did a fine job at filtering impurities from the oil. Though I highly recommend any top of the line oil filters of your preferred choice. I purposely used the extra guard for the oil analysis just out of curiosity.

A major determining factor affecting how long a filter "lasts" is how much debris your engine sheds into the oil. So saying that a filter lasts 10K is just nuts. It MAY still filter well at 10K but it may be clogged up at 5K, too. Depends on your engine and its condition.

I don't really consider a "oil filter test" a real test unless it actually filters oil. Maybe it's just me...but what's inside it doesn't really matter to me, it's the QUALITY of the oil after a fixed number of miles. Oil tests done, THEN cut them open and see which looks the best inside. I still enjoyed your video as to "build quality", but it's not really a oil filter TEST. Thank you sir for spending your time to show us this information. Peace✌👍

Stp extended life being on par with a Bosch shocked me a bit. It's usually on sale but such a good filter. I only buy Mobil 1 filters when they don't have the stp extended and I'm sure to you it sounds weird but my store usually carries all cartridge filters in Mobil brand. Was it a FRAM Racing filter, or a regular ExtraGuard? They used to make true "racing" filters. It was their "HP" line. Maybe they still do (?). Each filter has a "rated flow" you shouldn't exceed. Race cars aren't typical applications a regular filter is designed for. I've also seen a lot of "chicken-egg" cases where there is no evidence of "what failed first", the engine or the filter. When a bearing lets go, the entire oil stream is full of debris. Any evidence of filter failure is masked by what happened after the engine let go.

Erik Dale Fram filters are for idiots. No OEM filter uses cardboard end caps or rubber anti drainback valves! If I'm going to buy a filter that is not OEM it is going to be one that is superior to the OEM filter such as the Mobil 1. So much smarter to buy a $9.00 Mobil 1 filters rated for 20,000 miles than to buy a $4.00 Fram that in in grave danger of failing past 5,000 miles and not only that the rubber valve will shrink and allow more dry starts, the media does not filter nearly as well and the uneven pleating can negatively affect oil flow and pressure. The canister is also very flimsy which can burst or be punctured more easily. There is no reason to buy a Fram over the OEM or the high end aftermarket filter unless you are THAT broke or you think saving five bucks at the checkout counter is worth risking the longevity and like new performance of your engine. Cheap aftermarket filters are for idiots.

No. Most filters are designed to be used with conventional, blend or full synthetics.

The difference is the overall filter capacity. As the filter ages it gradually is more restrictive to flow. The modern engines gain rpms much more quickly. A restrictive filter can cause the bypass to open up and pass unfiltered oil. This is a concern particularly in vvt engines. The vvt systems are very vulnerable to debris.. The racing filters have the highest flow capacity.

Oils are good for 5k but filters do clog. Never buy fram or stp. Pay the extra $3 for the Bosch and look for something larger and heavier as long as your filter is not near exhaust parts. You dont want that extra heat in your oil or engine. Some cars specifically have smaller filters to reduce heat. Smaller filters need changed more. For example my subaru says change every 7k miles or 3.5k for severe driving. Believe it or not this oem filter is not good for 7k miles. It is way to small to last that long. If you do have a smaller filter I would always recommend doing the severe driving interval. Btw, my family follows this and we have always had our cars last 250k miles and they rarely have engine issues.

Change your oil and filter every 5,000 to 5,500 , and between your oil change charge your oil filter at 2,500 miles. The oil can last longer the your oil filter. When you change your filter earlier it will be cleaner and easier for the oil to go through the filter. Oil filters are cheap and it only take a short time to do it. Myself, I cut them open and see what is inside. What I learned is gasoline, shell gasoline is the clearest oil change. If I run everything place, cheapest gasoline, wal- mart, speedway, My oil change, and inside the filter is dirtier and darker.

You gotta be careful when you listen to people's opinions. "FRAM killed my motor." Lol of course there couldn't be ANY other factors within that situation at all. Right? The first thing I would do personally, when a person says things like that I would take a look at what they know and what they do with their car. Are they a real mechanic or are they someone who sits in their driveway and bolts-on performance parts. I wouldn't bet that they are a standard Automotive Vehicle user who simply knows how to drive a car and nothing more, because those people wouldn't know enough to be blaming the oil filter for a catastrophic engine failure. There's all those of reasons that an engine can fail and it Almost always is preventable if you know enough about your engine's design. For example a common one is Timing Belt grenade-effect in which for one reason or an other the timing belt (or chain) fails to keep the valvetrain in time with the upcoming pistons in an interference-type engine. This could be because of a hydraulic tensioner which had design issues from the factory (maybe there was a superseded design and can be replaced for just 1,500-2000 dollars). That's just one example of a reason it could happen and how the owner could have prevented it. Remember yes we've been making advancements in Auto manufacturing in the last hundred or so years but no, that does NOT mean the Mfg's goal is to build vehicles that have a life of 400,000miles. Why? Because they intend for the vehicle to fail and that you will inevitably buy a different one. There does come a time when you are putting more money into an old car than it is worth when you can buy a new one with a 60,000 mile b2b warranty and every repair is free to youand depending on your credit, the new car can be as low as 200-300 monthly (about 3,600 per year) instead of rolling the dice every day you get in your car "will I make it or will I have another 1,300 repair bill." Either way you look at it you don't get to drive for free and the only way to reduce those costs is if you're a trained and experienced Auto tech which also costs money and you'll need the 20 to 50 thousand dollars in tools too.

The only difference I see between the STP and Bosch is the silicone valve. Am I missing something?
@pjames44132 жыл бұрын
Maybe the media is synthetic blend on Bosch.

So I have a vehicle with high mileage and don't use synthetic or a blend for oil changes. Are you saying there's no point for me to purchase a decent filter?
@shepherd30858 жыл бұрын
TheVideoFuzz a good filter is still needed, it filters the small particles out so I would stick with a better filter even though you Change it often you never know what small things get caught in those guys
@wobblysauce8 жыл бұрын
It does not matter what you purchase, just follow the recommended procedure and should be good to go. Main thing is that you are.. doing it.
@thevideofuzz85848 жыл бұрын
wobbly sauce Very true. I usually try to change both a bit before I hit 3,000. Not sure if it helps doing it sooner but it makes me feel better about it haha

Mine is over 900,000km, doing it every 10,000k, but do lots of start stop, avg is about 200hrs-ish engine running time, driving-idle like a Taxi. Service books states 15,000k. 6L +0.5L with filter.

Jason K Mobil 1 full synthetic oil and extended life filter. The most important thing though, is to change oil every 5k or every year (whichever comes first) for full synthetic.

Jon Smith Super Tech are made by Wix. He talks about end caps. Mann doesnt have end caps.
@CJ-wc6lf6 жыл бұрын
The Super Tech is better, in my opinion, than the Fram (orange cheapest), and the Fram Tough Guard (silver). It seems to have much better bulk on the inside, especially since the Super Tech has metal end caps, and the Frams do not. One thing I like about the Fram Tough Guard is the Silicone anti drain back valve, but the lack of cleaning paper material is scary. The Super Tech is paper also, but it looks like much more than those 2 Frams. I prefer the Bosch Premium for price and quality, and buy in bulk off Rockauto.com. I have had bad luck with Rockauto.com before with some wrong parts that are a pain to return, but never bad luck with filters. Purolator is a very good choice for your engine, and what I would choose over Super Tech.

You should do this again but the same required filter number like compared mobile Fram boss STP mobile filters that were for the same car they should all be the same size and flow the same for that make model of motor

FRAM makes FRAM for their retail business primarily in Wal*Mart, some Honda and some Subaru oil filters. Champ has its own brands (Champ & Luberfiner), but it primarily operates as a contract manufacturer of many, many brands. Currently Champ makes OEM Ford (Purolator makes Ford OES "Motorcraft"), some OEM & OES AC Delco, some Mopar, some Harley, some Kawasaki, some K&N, some Mobil1, some Valvoline, etc. From 2011 to 2016 both FRAM and Champ were owned by the same parent company, Rank Group. But the Champ portion of the business was separated and ownership transferred to other investors in 2016. Both companies make and sell a TON of oil filters

@nemo53356 жыл бұрын
The interesting thing is that Fram makes both the worst AND the best filter available. The orange cans are shit, but the Fram Ultra Synthetic is possibly the best oil filter you can buy. There is a little competition now, but it's all way more expensive. Thick, full synthetic media backed with steel mesh, all metal construction and still has the nice rough grippy part on the outside.
@guangxidavidliu5 жыл бұрын
Obviously you are NOT an engineer or a scientist. I have been using FRAM for 30+ years for all my vehicles, and ALL pass 200K and running perfectly without any vibration. FRAM does NOT over-done with their products, but it is ADEQUATE protection for normal wear and tear. It is enough, no need for more. This is called science. For example, if your transmission doesn't support 500 hp and 2,500 ft-lbs torgue engine, why do you need pay the extra money to install and 500 hp engine? Why don't you steel plated your house in case of drive by shooting which might never come?

Ive been using fram for years on my vehicles never a problem with them. The thing ive never understood is what they mean by synthetic. It it actual any different material than a paper material cause it looks like the same shit 😂 also random interesting fact mobil makes k&ns filters.
@CarsNToys6 жыл бұрын
Good question. The synthetic material is different from polyester/cellulose/fiberglass used in lower end filters. Synthetic filters allow for greater flow and capture smaller particles. Cheers
