As a mechanic who has seen this problem before, I feel the need to add to your comments, because this problem is more complicated than this. Yes, the trans fluid is under pressure and is forcing fluid into the coolant, but the reverse happens when the car is shut off. The cooling system has a residual pressure of about 12 to 16 lbs. and that pressure forces coolant into the transmission.Coolant on a trans dipstick is not as apparent. The cooling system is now the least of your worries. If not repaired soon, you are going to need a new transmission. Your commentor with the Xterra has probably discovered this already as these 05, 06 and 07 Nissans are notorious for this problem. The trans needs to be flushed immediately and thoroughly as soon as this problem is detected, then flush the cooling system and either replace the radiator or (my preference) bypass and plug the radiator cooler altogether and add an external transmission cooler. Sorry that this isn't as simple as you might like, but coolant in the transmission will kill it! In many cases, sadly, the damage will already have been done.

I am so glad I checked this video out. This is exactly the problem I am having with my 1994 Dodge Ram Van. It is such a relief to know how to fix it and not spend hundreds of dollars. Now if I can get the electrical problems fixed it would be fantastic. I paid $1300.00 to a shop that specializes in electrical repair....still have the same problems. What makes it so bad is that this van is a wheelchair lift van for my daughter....her only transport.

I have a 2004 Nissan Frontier 3.3. It has run hot for years. Last week it overheated big time. I let it cool added 1/2 gallon on fluid mix and went about my business. Today I checked the oil etc and started it up to see if it would overheat (its been stiing since last week). Within a few minutes it started spewing oil out of the radiator cap opening. There is none in the crankcase and the truck runs great.

A while back my 98 Accord blew a gasket and over heated and somehow oil ended up in the water lines, yet no water got into the oil lines. The motor turned out to be cracked so we replaced the motor. I haven't had any issues with my car till today (Which happened to be one of the hottest days 114 degrees). The car over heated. We waited till it cooled down and checked if the radiator fans were turning on, which they were. We checked the radiator plug and there was some oil residue on the cap. So we removed the hose that goes to the radiator which also had a lot of thick oil gunk all inside stuck to the hose. We added more than half a gallon of water since we figured the car didn't have any. Turned on the car and the thermometer arrow was bellow half. After driving the car 5-9 minutes, it began to over heat again, this time I could hear a sizzling sound. Thankfully got it home before it could reach the H in the thermometer. So now I'm wondering, why is it over heating now? Yes, I never got the water lines cleaned out after the first issue, and I know thats horrible. Could this be the reason it over heated? Maybe it got hot enough to melt that oil gunk and it clogged a small hose and blew it so I'm leaking water now? By the way, we popped the hood open and the radiator hose looked like it was about to burst. What could have caused the hose to have soo much pressure? Anyway, sorry for this long long question :D Thats all, any wisdom appreciated ! Edit: The oil gunk or the oil I saw when I was adding water, was NOT milky like the first time it happened, it was just old and stuck on there real good. So I don't think I blew another gasket (hopefully).

I don't no if your still on this channel are not but if so got a question for you , My friend had me come to his house today to look at his 2002 Ford Ranger Edge 4.0.. He said someone told him the water pump or the transmission cooler was leaking, When i checked it out it was a big hole in a water hose that come straight up from his water pump to around his intake about 6 inches long.. well I took that off but I noticed the water was oil pink really bad, and so is the inside of the radiator... It looks like his transmission lines is running to a separate transmission cooler that is not part of the radiator that someone installed before he even purchased the truck.... its not leaking... would that cooler still cause fluid to back up really bad into his radiator even if it is not leaking the transmission cooler is not leaking?

Maybe you can help me. I’ve got a 2001 Eldorado transport bus with an 8.3 Cummins and I checked the radiator the other day to see if I have enough fluid in there to protect it through the winter and when I put the hose in to draw out radiator fluid it was oily. I checked my oil and it’s still up and I check my transmission while the bus was running and it still up but my hydraulic fluid is leaking. I know that it’s leaking around one of the fans by my radiator or by one of the radiators because I also have a thermal King heating cooling unit so I have more than one radiator. The bus was originally from Arizona so it’s got a massive air conditioner in it. Is this going to harm my engine if I run it? I need to get it to a shop so it can be work on.

hey, I have a 1996 geo prizm, which is basically a toyota corolla. I bought the car used at 80,000 miles in june, and it is now february and ive put 88,000 miles on it. one day when i checked the antifreeze i noticed there was a small amount of oil within the coolant resivoir. I was nervous so i took it to my mechanic whom i trust very well. He flushed the radiator and put brand new antifreeze in it , about two weeks later i seen the same thing occur. When i asked the mechanic he said i should not worry about it and this was when the car was on 85,000 miles. I drive 30 miles a day to and from school and i have had no problems with the car yet. Should i be worried ? or should i continue driving as i was.

Do not lose any sleep over this, the mechanic is correct. What he did not tell you is there will still be residue of the oil in the motor that has settled, you can not get it all out on the first try. It is nothing to worry about. Keep an eye on you transmission and oil level. If you start loosing oil and it starts showing up in your radiator again, then you have reason to have the mechanic look at it again. Hope this was helpful.

@Succstrat
@Succstrat 10 жыл бұрын
Sorry I did not see this sooner. If the oil is milky white it is engine oil, if it is pink, it is transmission fluid, My problem was coming from the transmission. There is a small transmission cooler inside the radiator tank that has transmission fluid running through it. This sits inside the radiator tank on one side of the radiator and uses the water being cooled for the engine to cool the transmission oil at the same time. That piece had a crack and allowed the transmission fluid to get in my radiator water. It was replaced, the leak went away but there was still residue of oil in the radiator so I flushed the system a second time. If it is engine oil you are dealing with, you probably do have a blown head gasket. You can confirm this by taking the radiator cap off when the engine is cold. Start the engine, give the radiator about 10-15 minutes to get up to temp and open the thermostat and then look at the water in the radiator. You will either see air bubbles being generated or the water will continue to be forced out of the radiator. This means the head gasket is blown and water is getting in from between the water and oil ports. You would have to drain the radiator etc...pull the heads, add new head gaskets, drain the engine oil and add new oil and coolant. You will need to put some inexpensive oil in the motor the first time just as a rinse. (use the original oil filter) Run the motor for 20-30 minutes, shut it off, drain the oil, pull the oil filter, replace with a new one, add oil and you will be good until your next oil change. Watch your oil after the first hour or so and continue to watch it, if the oil is only slightly tainted, it is still reside. Hope this is helpful.

I have a 2007 Nissan Xterra and have the reddish fluid mixed with my coolant. I noticed the transmission stuttering from usually a stand still and also slight shifting problems. So knew they have this known issue with the cross contamination and looked at the coolant reservoir and took a screw driver to test the fluid and it was not milky, just oily. Now do I have to pull the whole radiator to fix this one part or can it be done with the least invasive manor? I'm trying to avoid spending a ton of money at the Nissan dealership who will probably charge me over a $100 for a "diagnostic test on it"
@Succstrat
@Succstrat 10 жыл бұрын
You could take it to a radiator shop if it will make it there, they do not usually charge to look at it. They will be much cheaper than a dealership and can do the job just as well. He will be able to tell you what the problem is, will remove, repair and replace the radiator as well. Hope this was helpful.

@Succstrat
@Succstrat 10 жыл бұрын
Never continue to drive the automobile. Water in the oil will cause the internal bearing to rust and the you have a bigger problem that could lead to a motor overhaul. Please read my reply to Mr. Lopez below. It sounds like you blew a head gasket, the engine oil is mixing with your radiator fluid. The engine will eventually fill with water and cause the engine to lock up, you can also get oil in the cylinders. If the car sets for more than a week or so, the water in the cylinder will rust the rings to the cylinder wall and cause the motor to seize. A good mechanic could get it to free up but this is not a good thing and he will not want to warranty the work, he would prefer to do a total rebuild.

You mentioned the part was $60 bucks but how much to check out the transmission? What happens in the reverse? Coolant in the engine oil?
@Succstrat
@Succstrat 8 жыл бұрын
+ss4vegeta1 A radiator repair shop can determine if the part is bad and replace it usually included for the parts and price to rod out the radiator. (clean out the radiator by pulling the end caps off and running a rod thru each radiator tube then placing it in an acid bad to clean the rest of the corrosion.)Coolant in the engine oil is usually caused by a blown head gasket when the engine get to hot. Never add water to a radiator when it is extremely hot. You are forcing cold or cool water into chambers of engine metal that is pushing 300 plus degrees, the end result, cracked heads making the repair more costly. Always wait until the engine has completely cooled befor adding water, then you can figure out where the problem is, perhaps a bad water pump gasket, bearing, heater hose etc... all simple fixes.

I have a citroen saxo. I had my friend take it to repairman for oil and filter changes as usual. After this, the repairman added antifreeze. After 3 days, I asked my friend to take it back to the repairman to just ensure that all is good. The repairman found oil (yellowish) in the radiator. He said the engine has big issues. I said do whatever needs to be done. He took the engine cap off, had it tested, no cracks, he had it grinded for cleaning, and changed all the gaskets in the engine. He said there are some corrosions in the engine. He closed it and all started to be well. The gas however was not working very well. At low revs, the car is very weak, at higher revs, it is almost normal. He changed the ignition plugs. Did little good only. He said it is the coil possibly. I started to dislike the repairman. I refused to have it changed. Any ideas?
@Succstrat
@Succstrat 8 жыл бұрын
+halit yilmaz Wow, hope you are still viewing> I hate to hear this and think your friend a mechanic are questionable. Please do not take that wrong. This guy sounds like a shade tree mechanic, get away from that and find an actual mechanic, in the long run it may cost a bit more but he will not keep milking your wallet. Never tell a Shop to do what you need to because what they need to do is take your money after all they are a business, a shady business.Look for a shop with references from people that have been treated right. When you take a car to any shop ask them to give you a quote, repairs get expensive. Shade tree mechanics are prone to be parts changes that continue to chase stupid until they change the part that fixed the problem, get tickled with themselves and then hang a sign claiming to be a mechanic.I imagine that car is long gone, along with the mechanic. A true mechanic would have put his finger on the problem right away. Suggestion: Never try to diagnose what you think the problem is, it misleads the mechanic. Take it in, tell him the symptoms and let him diagnose the problem. Many things are quick fixes, others are costly and if you can not afford to pay, he has the right to file a mechanics lean, selling the car to recoup his time for the labor and parts he has invested.Hope this is helpful in the future.

@Succstrat

+Steve Smith Sorry Steve, your problem sounds like a bad motor. I imagine you ran it hot or low on oil and burned up the rod and crank bearings which would require a complete motor overhaul which is expensive. Check your oil and fluids regularly, especially after you take it to have an oil change. There are horror stories of shop forgetting to add oil because they got side tracked then the motor is ruined and you have a hard time getting them to admit responsibility.

My boyfriend had left the top to where the water goes(to radiator ) I found out when the car started overheating, I quickly pulled over and my mother put in the oil for me. At that time she thought it was the oil that spilled, so she pour 2 quarts of oil in the radiator. After I turned the car on it started getting hot again so I pulled over immediately. A truck took it to my mechanic. We thought by flushing everything out it was going to be ok. But I got a call saying the cylinder head cracked. Could this be possible if the car didn't overheat much?
@Succstrat
@Succstrat 10 жыл бұрын
If n engine gets to 220 degrees or hotter you have to let the engine cool down until it is completely cold before you add water or it will crack the head. If the engine is very hot, you add cold water, the water will go in the radiator and then start spitting it back out as soon as it enters the engine turning it into steam. If this is the case you would hear a pretty loud pop, that unfortunately, is the head cracking. The heads would have to be replaced along with the head gaskets. You say mom added oil to the radiator and then you moved down the road when it overheated again. I imagine this is when the truck came and took it to the mechanic. Understand you created a situation for the mechanic to diagnose. Adding two quarts of oil to the radiator would have turned the radiator coolant milky white indicating to the mechanic, the head gaskets were blown. (did he start it to make this decision, who knows.) If he did actually start the engine and saw air bubbles or the fluid push out of the radiator while the engine was still cold, either the head gaskets were blown or the head or heads have a crack in them. I'm sure it would be no surprise that a shop would jump straight to the conclusion and suggest the heads be replaced. My suggestion would be to get a second opinion and explain all the details to the mechanic. If he can actually verify this and prove it to someone that can go with you to review his findings, you will get your answer. Because I have the ability and knowledge, I would have drained the radiator, flushed it with water and started it back up. If there were no air bubbles or if the water was instantly pushing back out, I would place the cap back on the radiator and allow it to get back up to operating temp. If it stabilized, the head gaskets and heads are ok, if it started overheating within 20-30 minutes or on the test drive, I would conclude, the head gaskets, at a minimum are bad. The only way to verify the heads were cracked is for the heads to be taken to a machine shop so he can determine if they are or are not cracked. Sorry I did not see this sooner. I hope it got worked out properly and I hope this will at least help any others that have a situation like this.

+Succstrat Interesting, also, since I don't believe the two quarts of oil she added to the coolant would have caused the head to crack (if it's even cracked, and did they TELL the mechanic that they added oil to the coolant??)... so if it "is" cracked, I'm wondering if the mechanic might have caused it by flushing a hot engine with cold water, and not waiting long enough for it to cool down? And then telling her she had a cracked head without wanting to take responsibility for it, but hopefully her head wasn't cracked at all, and it's just the oil in the radiator that caused him to assume that. Is there a reason why you would flush only the radiator in her situation, and not the entire cooling system, assuming they ran it long enough for the oil to spread?? I guess you mean right after the oil was added, and before they drove it and circulated it through the entire system (including the engine passages). Or did you mean that you would have done that if you were the mechanic, after they'd already restarted it and driven a short distance? Pretty impossible for the average person on the side of the road to flush their radiator, even if there is a water source nearby, so understandable they would want to drive it somewhere, and she wasn't clear on whether they knew she'd added oil when she restarted the car, or not... unfortunately running it and driving it after the fact only spreads the oil beyond the radiator, and two quarts is a lot of oil. Lessons for those of us who are dumb enough to add oil to our radiators... but "I" only added 16 ounces. LOL. Just a few things to think about, for you folks out there who are new to the wonderful world of auto repair. :O)

+Raymond Sisneros Now there is a question. As time marches on so does Engine Design. As Engine Design moves forward, so does Engineer Stupid. Nothing changed from the beginning except, someone thinks they have a better idea so "lets add this:" Additional crap just means more repairs and money spent.Oil getting from the engine but not forcing water with higher pressure built up in the radiator is surprising. Most would suspect a blown head gasket or a crack in the block or head itself, but you would find oil in the radiator and water in the oil. Without looking at it, I would guess technology has added something stupid which has failed like an EGR plate... Curious to hear what they determine was the problem, please keep me posted.

why is my transmission Fluid is gray in my 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche
@Succstrat
@Succstrat 7 жыл бұрын
Transmission fluid a d water is pink, motor oil and water is a gray color if you have a gray color in your radiator you may have a cracked head or b loan head gasket which will allow engine oil to get into the water channels. Did you over heat the motor or let it get hot and start adding water before the engine cooled down. Never add water to a motor when it is extremely hot. The cool or ambient water temp hits the 200 plus degree metal and cracks the head our heads which is expensive to repair.hppe this was helpful

Only jealousy and insecurity drives idiots to troll. Get a life of your own and you won't need to bully people on line. This guy really helped me solve a problem. What in your sorry little life have you ever done to help someone or be a positive influence. I bet you do nothing for anyone that is kind, compassionate or helpful. Go away until you get a soul.

+Yvette Taylor It is always important to make sure what each cap and engine oil stick is for before adding fluids but not hard to correct. You will have to drain the radiator fluid using the drain valve/ plug on the bottom back side of the radiator. Once all the oil, water and coolant mix is drained, you will have to flush the engine and radiator system, if you are not mechanically inclined or have a friend that is it is best to have a shop or place that changes the oil take care of it.The process, only when the car is cold and has not been run so everything is not hot and under pressure, they will remove the bottom radiator hose, remove the radiator cap and place a water hose in the top of the radiator. Replace the bottom hose and fill with water. Replace the water until full, remove the bottom hose and drain the water, repeat until the water appears to be clean. You should use a radiator flush product purchased from any Auto Zone for the final cleaning, then add water and antifreeze.You will still have a small amount of oil in the radiator for a period of time because it is hard to get it all but it will not be a problem. Drive it for a couple of weeks and flush again.

how did you clean the oil from radiator, what chemical?
@Succstrat

Pull the lower radiator hose, catch the fluid and oil coming out in a container. Stick a water hose in the radiator and flush water through it until the water clears. Drain the water from the radiator, replace the lower hose and follow the instructions on the solution you purchase from some place like ORiely, Auto Zone etc... After you have flushed the radiator you will add your final coolant and water. Keep in mind, you may still see a slight bit of oil in your radiator fluid, it will probably be residue that was in the low spots of the motor. An option: after you flush the motor with the solvent, refill and run the motor with pure water, drain it and do it again. This should get the majority of the oil out, then add your final coolant and water.

I'm curious did you determine if it was engine oil, transmission fluid and how it got in your radiator? Otherwise draining and flushing the radiator will do you no good, you have to address the actual problem, oil in the radiator is the result of a problem.

+Succstrat Just read online that disconnecting upper and lower radiator hoses, blocking openings, and filling radiator with HOT water (instead of cold water from garden hose), then adding dish detergent or other radiator flush solvent and letting it sit for 10-15 mins then draining radiator (and repeating if necessary then rinsing radiator out with fresh water before refilling) does a better job of cleaning oil residue from radiator passages than cold water would do. Also, if engine has been run since trans oil leaked into radiator (or in my case, I spaced out and poured ENGINE OIL into my radiator!!!), there will be oil not only in the radiator but the rest of the cooling system as well... if so make sure your entire cooling system is flushed, preferably backflushed, and depending on the amount of oil you should check all of your cooling system hoses as well, to make sure there's no oil on the inside of the hoses, that could cause them to fail. Unless the problem is caught immediately, which in your case would be almost impossible, because how would you know trans cooler was leaking?), it's safe to assume that there's oil in the rest of the system, including the engine as you noted, but don't forget to check the condition of the hoses if there's any question about oil contamination, and/or carry spare hoses and tools with you in case one bursts while on the road and you need to replace it!! (Of course you probably didn't have near the amount of oil in your coolant that I did, I added about half a quart, because my mind was somewhere else and I though I was adding it to the engine oil). Also consider that not only was the pressure to your transmission and/or the normal flow of trans fluid disrupted, but you were also driving with low trans fluid overall, because whatever went into the radiator is no longer in the trans, so be sure to add trans fluid as needed if you haven't already, to prevent more of those vibrations... and hopefully there was no damage to your transmission from low fluid level. Just a few other things to consider... Happy holidays. :O)
