Thank you for this extremely well made video. You are doing the s2k community a big service! I had this job done by a mechanic I trust but was always curious what was involved.

Another excellent diy. A functional library that will live on as long as these cars still exist. What was the first clue your original oil jet bolts failed, and how did you confirm the diagnosis? Did you install an oil pressure gauge, or just hook one up for testing? Were there any symptoms other than low idle oil pressure? How many miles on motor?
@DIYGuysvideo2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Russell, also thanks for all the helpful comments on my other videos. I am considering doing a whole video on my oil pressure research but here's some info. Ever since I installed an oil pressure sensor on my 2008 CR it seemed to have low idle oil pressure. A few years ago it was 17 PSI and more recently it was 14 PSI. I installed the oil pressure sensor because I was genuinely curious when I would need a baffled oil pan. I had heard many horror stories of people losing engines due to low oil pressure so I was just curious how far I could take the stock oil pan. Engine had 165,000 miles when I replaced the oil jet bolts and every single one of mine were broken. After installing the new oil jet bolts my idle oil pressure is around 22 PSI.

Great video. Folks should be aware that the pages of the S2ki forum are littered with stories of disaster when amateur mechanics have tried to do this same job but ended up cross threading the Cyl 1 bolt. So, be careful! Also, check to be sure your motor has the old bolts - you don't want to do this particular job if you don't need to. :)

Thanks for this nice video. I have a question. In your video, you didn’t replace the oil pan gasket. Is that not necessary?

On cylinder one oil jet location is the object blocking your view the oil pump? If I were getting mine replaced anyways would it help immensely to remove it first? Not sure if you may be leaving it in on in the video for time saving purposes. Thnx for feedback! Great video
@DIYGuysvideo Жыл бұрын
It is much easier to work with the obstruction than to remove the oil pump. Removing the oil pump involves removing the cam chain, which involves removing the cylinder head.

what difference does it make if I use a different size torque wrench? eg. 30NM on 1/2 inch is the same as 30NM on 1/4 inch right?
@DIYGuysvideo2 жыл бұрын
Different sized torque wrenches are designed for different torque ranges. For example, some half inch torque wrenches are 25-250 ft-lbs, some are 10-150 ft-lbs. Even if you have a torque wrench that technically is within the range of 12 ft-lbs there are sweet spots within that range where the torque reading is most accurate. 12 ft-lbs is so low on the range of a 1/2 inch torque wrench that you risk the torque wrench not even working correctly, and with a 1/2 inch torque wrench it would be very easy to exceed 12 ft-lbs by mistake. Just read the forum posts on s2ki if you want to see how common this is. For example: s2ki.com/forums/s2000-under-hood-22/stripped-block-when-re-installing-oil-jet-bolts-1206138/

Since you found the culprit for your low oil pressure, does this change your view of the Toda oil pan at all or are you still not seeing any benefits from it? I'm torn between running the stock pan or getting something with baffles. It seems like it would be a good idea to go baffled but there are people on s2ki who swear that a baffled pan is unnecessary because they've run the stock pan plenty of times around tracks with high G turns and hoosiers.
@DIYGuysvideo2 жыл бұрын
This only sorted out low oil pressure at idle. I still seem to have some drops in corners so I’m not sold on the Toda oil pan at all. I need to get some better data but I can’t recommend a baffle oil pan yet.

I’m surprised no thread locker on those low torque bolts. That last one behind the oil pump especially would be worrisome to me because the universal joint in the extension would throw off the torque reading of the torque wrench, probably resulting in under torquing it. 12 ft lbs is so little that it’s hard to even trust the torque wrench, unless you have a high quality (read: expensive) one. Love your videos though. I have a stock 2001 and am thinking of taking on the banjo bolts and retainers before adding a turbo, etc.
