Working with mixed media using a variety of different paints. I work rapidly but build up the paintings in layers to make sketches that can be referenced in studio paintings.
Lewis Noble has lived and worked in Derbyshire since 1996. His focus lies in the physical and emotional impact of the landscape on the senses and the effect this experience has on us.
His paintings are not snapshots or photographic frozen moments but through repeated layering and eroding of the painted surface, they contain all of the time it takes to make them.
The result is a body of work that speaks to the heart of what it means to be part of the environment.

use to be head gardener of a garden with an italian garden with formal canal as its star piece. for sure the summer days were beautiful with water lilies and dragonflys. but it was in the autumn and winter that the pond became very mysterious. as the water lilies yellowed and the tan beech leaves blew in it became a place of 'suspension'. which you capture beautifully here. magic of course but the technical aspects of how you get that are fascinating. many thanks. best R

I hadnt thought if using thinned oil paint, I've been using binder and acrylic as a glaze to build layers but it does dry very quickly so you have to work quickly.

With acrylics I find to work in the layers a layer of binder left to dry secures what is going to be underneath and them you can get subtle layers and a binder gives gloss and depth

I get what you mean, I just don't get on with acrylic mediums. They have too plastic a look. The oil is far superior in my opinion and with an alkyd medium, drying time isn't an issue. I'd work in oil much more but find I'm becoming increasingly intolerant to solvents, so minimise the use. Thanks!

This was fascinating to watch and see how your vision of the layered leaves in water came out. I've tried looking for any followups, but can't seem to find any. Are there any more related to these paintings?

Wonderful painting. When you start with acrylic and F add oil paint, do you put a clear coat on top to complete the piece?

Is there anything I could use instead of using the oils to get this kind of effect Lewis? I can't use oil based paint because my hubby is asthmatic.

Not that I know of. Oil is quite distinctive. You can get solvent free mediums and brush cleaners which might help but I've not used them. Thanks for watching.

I use this glazing technique with acrylics. I will paint a coat of gloss medium over the piece first. When dry, I use a transparent color over some areas like this artist does, and then I wipe or dab off areas to create value differences and interest. The clear gloss coat protects the under-layer while you're glazing and rubbing away. It also 'brings up' the colors in the under-layer too, as most opaque acrylics can read as flat. Using gloss over your glazes can enhance this look too. I cannot speak to the difference in how it looks with oils vs acrylics, I think the artist does nice job of it here. But, I do get a very similar result.
