Hi Steve - yeah that was kind of funny. I spent several minuets setting up the shot and not finding the elephants. Well, all part of the fun. I also like the warm / darker tones for this painting. I love painting on black canvases generally. They seam to come alive with the smallest hint of light. Now what to paint next ....? Paul 😃😎

Amazing painting and one I definitely want to try. How big are your elephants? Inches tall? I want to get the perspective correct. Thanks for your help, I love learning from you!
@PaulRansonArt
@PaulRansonArt 7 ай бұрын
So, on my 16" x 20" canvas I set the horizon line at 6 inches. The largest elephant is 1 1/2" tall and the smallest is 11/8" tall. I used Microsoft Word and played with the size and printed off a couple of sizes and picked these as I think they looked about right. But its not too critical if your a little bigger. Small also works well and makes the scene look more open. Maybe this is what you'd like. Have fun painting this - Paul 😃😍😎

Hi Paul! I absolutely adore your elephant family! And your second go at the foreground colors- the Indian Yellow really makes it pop! You really have a knack at that fan brush. They’re so versatile!! And how funny your outtakes are! Those stickers were tenacious! Plus- a big aha for me- the linseed oil viscosity is very different from BRLC.. thank you for clearing that for me. Another fantastic tutorial. Thank you so much Paul! Have a wonderful week!! 🤗😃😎

Thanks so much 😊Stephanie - definitly one to put on the 'to do' list. One you've tried it you'll wnt to paint some more. Yes the little pot of linseed oil is my alternative to using a drop of thinners so beloved by Bob. Its just that little big thicker and great for thinning paint to an ink like consistency. And an added bonus - it dosn't react with liquid clear! I've had a few happy accidents and pickles in the past. Have a great week too - Paul 😃😍😎

Paul, i want to thank you so much for this beautiful painting inspiration It was such a joy to watch your tutorial, so i tried it too. Elephant free, which turned out to be a blessing. See, i got a bit confused after the sky and background. Left it a while. The picture that wanted to be painted on my canvas, it had a body of water with sky reflections. The big tree got moved into the middle ground, theres some highlighted scraggy ground by the left bottom corner. And the right bottom corner? 😊 i heard Bob's voice explaining that its too dark down there and we dont really know what's going on, so it got left dark and vague, i think it could be rather boggy.. That super challenged me and it was huge fun and also big learning happened. Thankyou ❤

Love you videos Paul. Where did you get your Mahl stick? I can only find ones with balls on the end. No hooks.
@PaulRansonArt
@PaulRansonArt 6 ай бұрын
Hi Clifford - Yes I could only find the traditional ones which are no good for wet on wet painting. So I made my own. Its a strip of wood 1" by 1/2" thick ( I used it to stir cans of paint ! ) with an old door hook screwed to the end. I bent the hook a little more to 90 degrees and added a few turns of masking tape to bulk it up. Maybe throw a couple of rubber bands on for extra grip. In the past I made one out of an old coat hanger and a garden cane with some cable ties. That worked well too. Hope this helps ... now you have your assignement for the weekend - Paul 😃😎

I love elephants! In fact I’ve been collecting elephant figurines for the past 3 decades. I’ve been wanting to try painting an elephant but I find it daunting. But, I think I’ll try this. Can I use acrylic instead? You make it look so easy yet the end result is awesome. Thank you! I’m a new subscriber.

Hi Lollette - welcome to my little art channel. Yes elephants are facinating and lovely to paint.🤗 I am lucky to have seen the art of David Shepherd who specialised in painting the animals of Africa. I choose this technique because it gets the elephants into the painting without too much stress. I think you could paint this just with acrylics too. Give it a try and see how you do. Then choose another animal - Happy Painting - Paul 🥰😃😎

This was cool to watch. One question though.....can you do this with acrylic?
@PaulRansonArt
@PaulRansonArt 6 ай бұрын
Hi - I've never tried but I'm sure you could. Just take care if you use a lot of water to blend the sky in case the elephant shapes lift off. Maybe onve you have a sticky shapes in place give then a thin coat of acrylic i.e. orange and let it dry. Then paint the sky over the top. The dry acrylic coat will protect the stickys until ready to peel off. Have fun and give it a try. let me know how you get on - Paul 😃😎

@PaulRansonArt

Hi Vicki - I did a bit in the video where I used graphite to make the outline on sticky back plastic. I used a sharp pair of scissors to cut it out. Have another look at the first 5 mins of the video and the links to the nellies is in the description - Let me know how you get on 😃😍😎

What did you use for the sticky back plastic? I want to try this painting. Thanks
@PaulRansonArt
@PaulRansonArt 6 ай бұрын
@@rhondabedsaul2608 Hi Rhonda - depends where you live as to the trade name. Here in the UK its called sticky back plastic - usually sold in DIY / hardware dept. for covering doors etc. In the states its more likely to be called Con Tact paper. The art shops also sell a product called Friskit which is way more expensive and don't stick to anything but water color paper so buy the DIY store stuff. But at a pinch because you only need a small amount try using masking tape stuck to some grease proof paper. Trace and cut this out and stick to the canvas. Hope this helps - Paul 😃😃😍😍😎😎

Is there a way to contact you ?send a picture ? as I have a picture that I would like to paint but don’t know how to go about it (I want to send it to someone as a surprise,they don’t know I’m painting) thank you!
@PaulRansonArt

I really appreciate your interest! Unfortunately, I can't share direct contact info, but I can offer some tips. The first ones being about separating your picture into layers - background, midground, and foreground. See if the image offeres a focal point like a building or tree etc and sit that on a 1/3rd hot spot. This will help you decide if your photo would make a nice painting. Now the last tip and probably the most important. Not every photograph makes a great painting! I have a ton of photos that just dont work well. So, have a look at you photo and make a decision based upon the points above. Happy painting - Paul 😃
