so what's the desired outcome of doing this? do d and b series have high oil pressure? I know on 4g63 we port the ofh and channels in the block to drop oil pressure when we remove the balance shafts.

Opening the passages for higher flow and shimming to boost the pressure. Mainly for turbo or high revving engines

The idea of porting the pump is to get more oil pressure and flow by reducing the restriction in the system. This could theoretically slightly reduce oil temps too as pushing oil through an extra restriction creates unnecessary heat. The idea of shimming the spring is to hold the relief valve closed longer to build more oil pressure at higher RPMs, although I don't know how helpful that is as these engines aren't really known for having oil pressure problems when functioning correctly. I have an extra oil pump that I ported and I may install it just for the heck of it next time I change my timing belt to see how much difference it makes, but my D17 is already running at 70 PSI at 3K RPM and going up to about 80 PSI at redline so I don't know how much better the pressure could get as that seems great to me already. So basically my opinion is if you have the pump off already there's no reason to not port it as easy as it is to do, but I see no real benefit to shimming the relief valve spring and I could see doing so possibly causing problems if taken too far. These engines are crazy reliable anyways so my thought is why mess with success.

👀nice way to over complicate an answer. 😁 if your gonna port to increase volume it’s no uncommon for pressure to drop from that. The shim helps make up for that. Generally increasing between 5-10psi. I wish ppl would take the time and effort for long form explanations in the places I don’t care to lol

@@VHBEngines That's true depending on where pressure is measured. If the pressure is measured inside the pump then yes the pressure would drop since pressure is created by restriction and the restriction in the pump would be less, but if the pressure is measured in the engine block then theoretically it should increase from reducing restriction upstream of the sensor since volume through the engine would increase and therefore more pressure would be built behind the bearings since their restriction would remain the same and flow through them would increase. The engine's restriction is more or less constant, so increasing flow by reducing restriction in the pump would theoretically increase the oil pressure in the engine block.

I have a b18b turbo .p8r head.. my oil pressure when fully warm is only going up to 40psi.. can the pump go bad and send low pressure or ?
