Who would ever have thought that THIS man -- Danny Elfman -- would become one of the most prolific and in-demand music composers and arrangers for the movies????

It must have been one of the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo's earliest gigs when I first saw them. I had arrived early to get a good spot for a Firesign Theatre performance at the KPFK Christmas Crafts Fair, when a someone in a gorilla suit walked out and found a drumstick on the ground.... It's very rare that I encounter something so jaw-dropping and bizarre and completely new and utterly amazing. My first reaction was "Why didn't somebody do this years ago???" as if my earlier life had existed in a vacant wasteland devoid of MKOB. For all the success that Oingo Boingo later had, for me compared to the Mystic Knights, Oingo Boingo was just another band.

When I was a kid in the 70s, we used to sit at the Mermaid Tavern on many occasions and watch the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo Perform.. It was very surreal, and I can still remember sitting in the big room where they had performances there.. in Topanga Canyon.. We would sit on the floor, in the dark, it went on till late at night.. It was VERY strange, to say the least.. When I watched this video, it brought back a lot of memories.. I wish some of those performances were filmed and put up on KZbin..

I remember a quarter or full page ad for a Mystic Knights show in the LA Times or the Weekly with a picture of the troupe and thinking, "I like that name" and "look at all those people in that show" and "I wish I could go". No car, no money, no way to get to the west side of L.A. - beyond my means. Now I can scan newspapers.com and see reviews of the mystic knights - all positive - and all the shows they played in the LA and Bay areas back in the day. At one point, a fire at a venue burnt up their stuff and set them back. It was a special time, such a talented, creative group of folks. Update: I just scanned newspapers.com again for references to the mkotob. And I found they made a Los Angeles tv appearance on Monday May 5, 1975 at 8:00pm on UHF Channel 68. That station was KVST-TV, a public tv station that operated from May 5, 1974 through December 23, 1975. You wonder how many fans tuned in or how many became fans just tuning in by chance, channel surfing or following the programming on that short-lived station. Wow.

I still have an old club advertisement from the Sweetwater Café in Redondo Beach for them. That location is now some almost beachfront chain hotel; the 'ole strip mall also was home to an old venue called The Fleetwood where X, Black Flag, Circle Jerks played all the time.

See kids if you learn to master the xylophone and take massive amounts of drugs then you too could be a world famous music composer for some of the most memorable movies ever made.

Wow! First time I've seen this footage. Very reminiscent of The Residents. Although the Knights seem to have a better understanding of how to actually play their instruments. No offense to The Residents who, along with Oingo Boingo, rank very high as all-time favorites.

Ok is there a name for the song they are performing when you see Richard wearing the rocket and Danny blowing flames? The same one they performed at the Gong Show?
@nutstothis3 жыл бұрын
Old comment, but I'll answer it for anyone still wondering. On every bootleg I've seen, it's called "Here Comes the Rocketman." I don't know if that's official or just fan consensus.

@kimberlys6556 жыл бұрын
matt lehnardt if you would have gone to some punk rock shows that I was at in the 80s you would have seen some chicks stage-diving. They just had to watch out for boob and crotch grabs. I would be in the pit slam dancing, no stage dives with boob grabbing for me. I would get on stage with ska bands and skank, though.

@kimberlys6556 жыл бұрын
bodensick Danny is very attractive to a lot of women. He puts out this aura and also his personality. He's a ginger but he has this very devilish smile. I'm a ginger, people either find us very repulsive or very attractive.
