Oingo Boingo has always such a weird way of presenting their message. Like the message is so clear but subtle at the same time and it’s so odd really. And sometimes with sounds and tones so oddly upbeat compared to the weird and twisted stories being told. But Danny Elfman also expresses those darker themes and emotions in the songs with his odd movements and facial expressions that looks like he’s on the verge of a psychotic breakdown. And his voice also sells that. A mind boggling group but a great group nonetheless.

This song is about a guy who has achieved what he wants, total isolation, and is proud of how all his secrets are stashed away, how orderly his life is, and how he is free to do what he wishes without the constraint of the opinion of friends. However he is sad, as his life is empty, and as much as he tries to fill it with materialistic possessions, he wants to have somebody who cares for him, but he fears being as invisible in the outside world as he is inside his bubble. Yet when somebody approaches him to try coax him out, he shuts himself in, telling them "This is my private life, go away." I can relate to this song on so many levels.

One line about this song in particular makes me wonder. "There's something dangerous I like." This could be anything. Is the isolation he likes dangerous? Is he on drugs that isolate him and are also dangerous to him? Is it a particular thing he's addicted to that is dangerous to his health? I sorta think that loneliness is the side-effect of having control of everything because he is alone. He loves being alone, but the loneliness really just kills him on the inside. This is a tough one.

will forever be my favorite song just for this reason, as Im chronically physically ill and been in isolation for a decade now as a hikiko/neet. this song kinda made for us tbh. the conflicting nature of wanting to remain in your private life but wanting to call for someone to take you out of it. I think the happy nature of the song really seals that in too bc of how fun it can be to have your own space with nothing else to influence your true nature and the blissful state of freedom. I've never heard a song written in this way that encapsulates this dichotomy it so well.

The set of artistic videos from Danny+Oingo Boingo paired with the chosen song's lyrics are so fantastic and deep. I often wonder how many people pass by without noticing. I also wonder how many people miss the repeated, cryptic allusions to a dark being residing around or within Danny. When you enter into the videos for Private Life, Nothing Bad Ever Happens to Me, Little Girls, Gratitude (the most obvious display), you are stepping from reality into a mental/dream state. The art of these videos in particular are grossly underappreciated at this point in time. It is awesome to see Danny has reappeared with new material in the last year and it is as thought provoking as ever.
@Itsjustliketheweather6 ай бұрын
Yes! I ponder this often! These videos are performance art, not just music videos. Danny puts thought into eveything he does. Personifies the shadow and presents it in a way where we can view it comfortably, but just uncomfortable enough for thought. A true artist, and inspiration.

Growing up in suburban southern California in the early 80's (Jay and Amber- think Fast Times at Ridgemont High), "Boingo" were every bit as big, as beloved as the biggest groups at the time. But it seemed like only the college kids that went to their shows in L.A. or high schoolers/junior high kids who heard them on local radio knew about them. Fun times, great music, bizarre humor- Oingo Boingo was a secret handshake among the kids that didn't fit in. And, you haven't even played their early stuff which features HORNS! I've always loved the high quality way Oingo Boingo mixed all their records. There's so much punch in the bass and drums. Bands today just blend it all together and it sounds like mud in comparison. As a result, these old records sound brand new today even compared to what a new group has just released. It probably also has a lot to do with all the shitty digital recordings in studios these days. Originals in the old days were done on reel to reel. To this very day there hasn't been anything to match the type of recording quality the ancient reel to reel provided in studios and in playback. Hell, I'd still prefer records and cassettes to todays CDs. Also, if you have a group's old cassette, you can actually break down and even separate each individual track if you wanted to. There's no way in hell you can do that with CD's

@@spimbles underrated now? They broke up years ago. Out of sight out of mind. Danny Elfman moved on. In the 80s and 90s they were far from underrated. No one mentions them when talking the 80s because those people don't know music or the 80s. They are mostly morons who weren't there and/or self labeled music experts. Oingo Boingo go back to the 70s on the old Gong Show when they were called the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo
@manuelgrotesque7198 Жыл бұрын
Maybe, but the first albums are the best they've done, more like a live act, then afterwards they used too much that 80's FM big rythm, with less breaks and crazy structure and more important less groove, just like every new wave band you can named they got trapped the mid 80's sound. You don't realy feel a band is playing after the 3rd album (counting forbidden zone as the first). There are good song all along their discography though. Actually that third album with "insects" already has a no-groove sound like a band recording instrument by instruments, but you can feel the songs are from the same batch than Only a lad, so it still feels like a true rock band...

I love Oingo Boingo!!. This song is so unique & catchy and the video is hilarious and awesome! I've been a fan since I was in grade school ('87-'88?- thanks to my awesome Dad) and every year or so I gotta go on a Boingo Binge (:... Its crazy to think that just 4 yrs. prior to this songs release (which would be '79) The Doobie Brothers & Donna Summers were topping charts with a music style sounding decades older than this!?.. Its even more apparent to me now, when considering music of the 80's/90"s &now that Oingo Boingo not only "stepped out of the box" to create innovative/original music during a time when "new wave" was busting out experimental hits left and right... but I feel like amidst all of that....they literally invented their very own genre of music, that still to this day remains kind of an exclusive, and rare category to define. :} ........................(or find... lol) I also love that Danny E & OingoB weren't afraid to be uncommon. With their distinct sound and instruments, to Elfman's enigmatic persona & one-of-a-kind vocals.. I'm sure a lot of people most-likely considered him "strange" or "creepy" (..as I can see below, these comments are still being made about him in 2014 on you tube!) lol! ..Obviously that's what he was probably going for but I don't find D.Elfman creepy at all {:.. I think He's a delightfully bizarre, yet totally brilliant artist & Its from his eccentric & "creepy" imagination that sooooooo much progressive, fun and influential music was created... Beyond Boingo.. I'm sure everyone's already aware of Elfman's amazingly composed soundtracks for some of the most memorable motion pictures in recent history (Batman, Beetlejuice, the Nightmare b4 xmas, The Simpsons etc.etc.) And I cannot imagine any of those movies being nearly as interesting OR successful without the iconic musical accompaniments scored bye D.E. ..Sooo I guess I'd just like say: Thank you Danny Elfman for your awesome array of musical contributions and for all the great songs created with Oingo Boingo! {: T h e E n d lol

Your response to a song about the sadness of crushing loneliness is to isolate? I think you misunderstood stomething
@wellobviously2 жыл бұрын
What I took away from this video is this guy likes to keep things to himself and he doesn't want to involve people in his business. He isolates himself so much so that he becomes invisible and its driving him insane. He realizes that with all this privacy comes loneliness. So he pleads for someone to seek him and help him open up. But at the same time he is reluctant since his privacy is his comfort zone so he finds ways to defend it. He's also afraid of the uncomfortable truths that his private life will reveal about him.

Just realized that my friends have been terrible towards me and made me feel miserable. Now I feel like I’m unlovable and alone. For whatever reason, this is the song that speaks to me in my most desperate moments, a plea to be seen by someone, to be noticed and acknowledged. A desperate call for someone, anyone to like you as you truly are. Maybe that’s just me right now though. If your reading this remember, you owe your time to no one. You don’t owe anyone anything. The only thing you owe is love and kindness to yourself. Don’t let anyone make you feel terrible about yourself. Your are amazing and there are people out there who will truly care about you. Thank you for reading, remember to always be kind.

I’m in a similar situation right now and have been contemplating leaving everything behind (can’t really say exactly what I mean unless I want my comment to get removed lmao). I’ve been stuck in a cycle of trying to find someone who likes me without putting in the time and effort of liking myself first. Anyways, what I’m trying to say is that this helped me snap out of those thoughts, and at a very crucial moment too. I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to write all of this. We’ll both find a place where we’re accepted and loved for who we are. No matter how long it takes.
