I feel like if they wanted to do specifically a Mater movie, they shouldn’t have involved the rest of the Radiator Springs gang. There could have been a play on Mater’s Tall Tales series, where at the end of the movie Mater recounts the movie to the rest of RS, but no one believes him. Then, have Finn show up to get Mater for another job (but won’t outright say anything about being a spy), which can cause Lightning and the others to question if Mater was telling the truth about not only that story, but all of his other stories.

The only reason people didn’t like it is because it was so foreign and different from the feeling of the first movie. If you put that aside, it’s a good fucking movie. Cars 2 is perfect for kids who love Cars. It’s fun. It’s silly. It introduces new characters, and has that classic love the earth message that movies of this era all went with for kids. It’s not the best plot ever, and it’s definitely more so Mater’s movie, but it’s not the worst Pixar film by a long shot compared to the Good Dinosaur, which I wanted so badly to like.

I like cars 2, don’t get me wrong, but it really does just feel like a maters tall tale that got turned into an actual movie and had logic applied to it. Still, I love all the characters. The first movie feels like a tribute to Americana and racing, and this one feels more like exploring characters and world building. You can definitely tell the crew had fun coming up with all the wacky characters and world

The spy plot could have worked if they made Mater more serious and there should have been more explanation to Axlerod’s plan by making the World Grand Prix longer (such as giving it 5-10 tracks as opposed to just three) have Mater leave on his own free will as opposed to Lightning yelling at him for screwing him over. And having more epic moments.

I think you misunderstood a lot of the points of the movie. The spy stuff was the main plot, but you had closed your mind from it because you were so invested in the racing stuff, so you were hyper-critical, and did not realize some important plot points, comedic moments, and social commentaries.

I was always a big fan of AMCs, especially Gremlins and Pacers, so it was really cool to see so many of them in the movie, and I think that’s probably the main thing that makes me enjoy it
