I didn't know who she was until she dropped a song recently with Megan Thee Stallion (of course I know Megan more lol) and apparently it was for this movie. So hearing it, I thought "wow Megan is obviously great but Renee surprised me" then I looked into her song, she's very talented. I was doubly confused by the full trailer because the teaser trailer played before the Eras Movie and included an audio clip of Renee Rapp singing 'My name is Regina George' from 'Meet the Plastics' and that alone made me a full on Renee stan.

Absolutely agree. This whole “hide the fact that it is a musical” marketing method has happened again and again in recent years and it always fails. People will see and love a musical but market it to people who would be open to it from the get go.

THIS. It's so campy and very much leans in. I don't need Mean Girls to be another Hamilton in terms of lyricism or a Les Miserables in terms of musicality. Give me fun, silly, over the top Teen Drama. Mean Girls knows what it is and doesn't feel the need to apologize or be anything else. Everyone else can just chillax. Also, the pro-shots of Stop and Sexy are hands-down some of my favorite videos to watch when I need a pick-me-up. Haters can hate. I'm just gonna enjoy the sugary fun.

The reason they don't mention it's a musical is because the trailer was just stage 1 of their promotional campaign. Build early social media buzz by giving KZbinrs something to talk about. They're not hiding it, they're asking people like you to promote the fact for them. They've received massive amounts of free promotion on social media. A regular musical version of the trailer would have slipped by pretty quickly.

I’m guessing it’s cause musicals can be kinda polarizing for people. Also the last movie musical most ingrained in people’s minds is CATS, with how badly that went, with being a both commercial and critical bomb and creating a trauma bond, the execs probably made a hard stance in wanting to avoid that and decided to push away from marketing it as a musical.

I went to Spiderman Homecoming five times in theatres, and I think Mean Girls the Movie the Musical might end in me having a new record. I think they could have made such a cool trailer to apex predator, especially if they were going to actually show off the musical elements of the movie, I also thought it was so weird to not even use music from the show in the first trailer even if they weren’t gonna show it off like some of the music could have passed as pop if they really wanted it to, still hate they felt the best way ti advertise it was lying to us, cause not only does it lie to non music theatre people, it also is really disappointing as a music theatre person like very much gives the opposite affect of what I think they wanted to do

I just posted this on Facebook mere minutes ago, so I'm going to say it here too. "really not a fan of this new trend of studios trying to mask the fact that their films are musicals. the Mean Girls "remake" is an adaptation of the musical. The Color Purple "remake" is an adaptation of the musical. the Wonka prequel is a musical. Like why hide it?! people who really like musicals will happily support the musicals. people who don't like musicals HATE surprise musicals. it's just a really odd marketing strategy in my opinion."

Exactly, I'm not much of a musical fan, and have no interest in watching a musical of movies that I loved such as Legally Blonde or Mean Girls. I was kind of interested in the mean girls movie remake even though it seems like the exact same characters and storyline with an updated cast. I only learnt from this video that it's actually a musical, they definitely don't show that in the trailer. I would not have been happy with a surprise musical moment at the cinema.

I’m going to be honest… I hated the pop rock musical recreation trend of the late 2010s, and I hated mean girls especially. I also feel that the reason why they want to hide the fact that it is a musical is because of the “basic” theater kid thing. I’m not sure if anyone else went through a phase like this, but i went through a period where i felt like listening to musicals that were popular on tiktok like Six, Heathers, and Beetlejuice was bad because it was so common. I didn’t want people to stereotype me like that, so i think they want to try to hide the fact that it is a musical, so nobody has to feel bad about watching it.

They are making an adaption of the 2018 broadway musical, so if you want to hear the music you can check out the broadway soundtrack! It’s actually pretty good, i just hope they don’t change the music too much for the movie!

Honestly something interesting Ive noticed that’s true in the new movie and even in the musical is that promotionally, they’ve kinda just completely ignored cady. Like the original movie poster was Lindsey Lohan up close with the plastics off to the side, but then in the musical it’s all the plastics and now it’s just Regina. Early bird! But yeah, it was very... safe, for a lack of a better word. Idk why they are hesitant to market it for what it is: a movie musical. No instrumental snippets of THE songs of the musical. Would have been amazing to hear the motif of the plastics play through the trailer. It would have kicked it right out the ballpark! It's just a very questionable move. Trying to appeal to the masses is generally good but in this case, it alienates the fans of both spectrums and sets up a false expectation to the GA instead of establishing it as a "new twist" to the original AND the Broadway production.

QOTD: I'm honestly really excited! Like I love the OG film and I love the musical (i got the chance to see tour back in spring and I got to be in a production of the show during the summer as Principle Duvall) but i was really confused and disappointed that they did not use any of the songs and it's like i understand not everyone likes or wants to see a musical but its hiding that it's a musical the way to go cuz even before the trailer came out I've seen alot of non theatre people trash talk about this movie cuz they think this is a remake and/or reboot of the film (which we all know it's not!) So the fact they a Olivia Rodrigo song instead of any of the songs from musical is pretty much adding fuel to what they believe this movie is. Idk, maybe they just want to keep the songs a surprise. I'm just hoping they made good choices about what songs they decided to cut and/or change.

Went to the cinema the other day with my flatmate and saw the initial like title screen before the trailer started and I told my flatmate "I really wanna go see this one" and she asked what it was so I said it's the Mean Girls musical but then there was no music in it so she asked if I was sure it was the musical and I honestly wasn't. Like. I knew it was a musical but after seeing the trailer I just went "oh maybe it's actually not and I have misunderstood the whole thing. completely unrelated but, i went to my very first audition ever, and got my very first callback ever, they asked us to dance, and after we did, they asked some people to stay in later, and the rest of us got to leave, and so far there's been no response from the theater :'D, they didnt have anyone to read any scripts or sing anything (dunno if they did it with the people they aksed to stay in later), but they didnt tell us if we were getting the parts or not either?, and its been 6 days since we left the callbacks and still nothing, idk what i should do

The OG movie came out when I was in college. I took my 13 yr old to see the touring show this year. So we are excited to see this new Mean Girls. But I agree, they didn’t market this movie right. If it was just a reboot we wouldn’t care. We are going to see it because it’s the musical.

I saw the trailer lately and fully thought it was a reboot, and all I could think of was how much I disliked Mean Girls 2. I thought it was something like that and I was fully going to ignore it's existence. Didn't realise it was the musical until I clicked on this video! Now I'll definitely go see it! haha

Studios tiptoeing around their movies being musicals is disappointing, but definitely not new. I remember the trailers for the 2005 Producers (oh God I'm old too) doing the same thing. Even the Color Purple trailers I've seen don't emphasize the singing aspect nearly as much as I think they should.

I recently saw Mean Girls at my movie theater but I panicked when Revenge Party came on and I worried they were going to kill off Reneè Rapp and I started sobbing. I took my service dog daughter, Zara, and ran out. Also I came out as bisexual and have a huge crush on Reneè. I think she's cute and adorabl.

I had the exact same reaction about Not Your Moms like …. I’m trying to math like does it mean every single person who liked Mean Girls OG had babies that exact year then the babies would be twenty years old when the musical is released !?

I actually did get to see this musical in Toronto, so of course I am excited to see a film of it, regardless of the trailers. But my goodness, my sister showed me that first trailer and I did think they had just given up on adapting the musical and were making a weird reboot. Also, fun fact: I saw the musical before I ever saw the movie!

Went with my 9 year old cousin to go see Wish (decent movie for very young kids, wasn't for my age demographic though). When they decided to have THIS movies trailer as one of the previews I literally almost panicked. Thankfully the trailer was tame and my cousin wasn't traumatized, but gosh man. Do they gotta.

I totally agree. The trailer is not doing it any favors. I am still so down to see it because I love musicals and Renee and that’s all I need to know but I do think there will be lots of people are confused and they should have done better with the advertising. I didn’t know there was another like Regina’s version trailer. I will definitely be watching that after this.

It was hard to understand what the heck it was because the trailer (first one) had absolutely no singing in it so I assumed it was the musical. The second preview had the iconic “I am Regina George” line and that was truly the only clue it was the musical.
