A professor once gave me some invaluable advice that really shaped my study routine: “Get up as early as you can, and treat studying like a job.” So, I started waking up at 4:45 AM (the earliest I could manage) to shower, dress, and dive right into my studies as if I were clocking into work. I mapped my studying around what would normally be a work or school day. The night before, I would review my study materials and tackle my questions, then first thing in the morning, I’d take a quiz on what I studied. If I could write out the answers without even glancing at the book, I knew I had it mastered. Turns out, early mornings aren’t just for the birds-sometimes, they’re for breakthroughs!

Hey, I’m currently studying for the MCAT. How did you not get burnt out from waking up at 4:45am? Also what was your night time routine like? How did you find balance with everything?
@Resiliency20142 сағат бұрын
@ I approached studying like it was a job. Just as you would have different tasks to complete during a typical workday, I divided my study sessions into specific tasks. For example, in a regular job, you might have meetings, take notes, or make calls. I applied that same structure to studying: I set specific tasks for myself, like reviewing material (meetings), taking notes (note-taking), and practicing problems (calls). By organizing my study time in this way, I treated each task with focus and intention, similar to how you would handle different responsibilities at work.

Hey! Been a follower for years and been waiting on the invite to give advice😅. I did Blueprint prep course,m for 3 months. It increased my score by 10 points. I also watch tons of Medschool HQ videos, specifically the application review videos where Dr. Gray takes apart med apps of student that were accepted and those that were not. These were super helpful. No one will get in the way of God has for you. I truly believe (even though i don’t know you) like you said that your purpose is showing nontrad students that they can still reach their goals. You will touch the lives of so many students! (Saying this as a nontrad myself currently in my 2nd year of medical school). You got this!!!

As someone WHO UNDERSTANDS and will be graduating from med school in a few months I would love to talk to you. It sounds like strategy is missing. I want to see you win I’ve been watching you for too long and I can see your passion to be an unstoppable OBGYN ….

Supporting you and everyone else who is on a similar journey. I’m graduated from medical school nearly 20 yrs ago. While medicine has changed it’s still a rewarding career for many reasons. I’m practicing medicine on my own terms now and it’s lovely. In the DmV so let me know how I can support you (or anyone else). Good luck!

Please make sure you do as many practice questions as possible. And review them. You will begin to see patterns in the types of questions that are asked, and the way they are asked. Take note of the types of questions you keep getting wrong and the subject topic and the hone in on those. I highly recommend NOT spending too much time studying content. At most maybe 3 weeks, make sure you spend the majority of your time doing questions. This was the turning point for me. You got this in the name of Jesus. Super proud of you!

Brelynn I have been here since Spelman days so I've witnessed allllll of this on the vlogs. I'm so proud of you for accomplishing a BUNCH of great things girl! I keep watching because I know with all that drive & ambition in you, you WILL be Dr. Brelynn! I'm rooting for you!🎉🎉❤

Brelynn you got this. I’m a fourth year medical student now and my best advice is to do hella questions and review those incorrects. I wouldn’t do content review, just get your content review from reviewing the questions. It’s about pattern recognition. I did horrible on the MCAT twice, but this strategy had helped for me step 1&2. I would do uworld and blueprint, all of the questions on both.
@Juliana-mm5td3 сағат бұрын
My advice is that if you get a question wrong, make sure you really sit with that topic and know the ins and outs of it so that you don't get it wrong again. Also make sure you have a conceptual understanding of topics, especially chem/phys. There are a lot of chem/phys questions where you can eliminate incorrect answers without using the formulas if you understand the concept, i.e acid/base questions.

I admire you and applaud you for sharing while you’re still going through the valley. It’s not easy. It’s so very vulnerable and raw and not easy. You’ve got this. I’m believing for you. May God strengthen you as you stay the course.

I have been following your journey for a while now! You def got this. Keep the faith. I didn’t want to give advice unsolicited but you are not alone. I think your plan sounds good. I would also recommend making an excel sheet or calendar to cross off your concepts. Also, Reddit has some old AAMC CARS practice. Good luck!

Gotta apply to the midwest because they are more likely to accept non traditional applicants. Also DO as well! And if that don’t work do Ross/SGU. I have friends there doing well and my medical director went to Ross! Any means possible.

Yes regarding Ross, a friend of mine in undergrad was able to do a significant amount clinical rotations in the United States and was able to match relatively well in her preferred specialty in the states.

Hey Brelynn! I just wanted to say how much I've appreciated watching your journey since the Spelman days. It’s inspiring to see someone pour their heart into their dreams, just like I am trying to do! As a first-generation student and the first doctor in my family, I totally get where you’re coming from. I’m also on the path to becoming a doctor, but i want to go into optometry, and it hasn't been easy. I’ve taken the OAT three times and went through a post-bac program, and now I’m diving into another master’s program. It can feel overwhelming at times, especially when it seems like standardized test scores carry so much weight. It’s frustrating to feel like a single score can overshadow everything else you’ve accomplished. But, like you, I'm determined to keep pushing forward, no matter how tough it gets. I’ve talked to several schools, and they’ve pretty much said the same thing about my OAT score-it feels disheartening, doesn’t it? But I truly believe that our journeys are about so much more than just numbers. We’re here because we care deeply, and that’s what counts! You’re definitely not alone in this. There are so many of us navigating similar hurdles, and while some might choose to step back, I have faith that we’ll keep moving forward together. Keep fighting for your dream of becoming a doctor. We’ve got this! 💪✨ Sending you lots of positive vibes on this journey!

Make sure u look into rural MD/DO schools bc they take a lot of low stat black applicants. Look into Indiana, Vermont, Wisconsin, etc. it’s not a fun city but u will become a doctor
@rosesqu60128 сағат бұрын
I agree! Many of the DC schools are low yield and DC medical schools attract the smartest black applicants. PWIs, DO, and rural schools are her best bet for low stat black women.

I recommend doing the official AAMC MCAT question packs, and taking time to do an honest assessment of your grasp of HY content. Hang in there. -OMSIII

Yea; 100% let go of the DMV thing…… Definitely nothing matters but MCAT don’t spend money or time to take Anymore college degrees. ONLY MCAT ~

I wonder if you’ve applied or considered applying to King Drew med school? It’s the only HBCU in California. My father in law is an attending at the hospital. The LA area is expensive, though. Can’t help you with the MCAT but I suggest building scheduled self care activities into your schedule…I find when having unstructured time that having things on my calendar I have to leave the house for like a dance or workout class helps me not to procrastinate on writing because it’s not an empty day stretching ahead of me. And helps fight the isolation and burnout from working alone. Good luck on your studying and your application cycle this year!

Brelynn I’ve been watching since Spelman..you got this but I think you need a change of scenery. Think about Ohio as UT and Ohio State are great med schools Also Ohio University has a very good DO program Trust as HBCUs are great but they did you dirty this time. Maybe residency maybe how you get back there but you may need to pivot I wish you all the best this time around 💛💛

Yaaay for your tenacity! 💕💕 Re: CommuniTea Time, I will def try to use this study time for you as reading/writing time for me-- I start my Qualifying Exam this week to transition from PhD "student" to "candidate." 10 weeks to get this exam done and submitted. So it'll be cool to feel like we're all working on something together during these times. I think 7 or 8 will work for me, personally, but you should honestly do what makes the most sense for you. We'll follow suit the best we can. #BlackNerdsUniiiite 🤓😎

Brelyn I found a private tutor on facebook that greatly helped with my MCAT. He charged $25 per hour. I highly recommend exploring the idea of private tutor and see if you can find one for a cheaper cost. I mainly used him for going over practice problems
