Okay, I FINALLY got my Toyota Tacoma Tuned | Overland Torque Tune

In today's video, I get my Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road tuned with the Overland Torque Tune (OTT)! It took me a while to finally decide to get a tune, but now that I have it on my truck, I'm super happy! Special thanks to Overland Tailor Tuning, Paul from PNW Tuning, and Quoc from TK-421 Tuning. Without them, I wouldn't have found this tune, and I probably wouldn't have made this video.

Seeing a lot of questions about gas mileage before/after the tune. The reason I did not talk about it in this video was because a few days prior to getting my truck flashed with OTT, I got brand new tires (which adversely affected my gas mileage by about 1-2 MPG in the days leading up to the tune). So because another variable was introduced recently, I didn’t want to draw any conclusions. However if you’re curious, I average 17-18MPG currently. Thanks for watching as always! 😊

Toyota engineers programmed the engine ECU/transmission to reduce emissions as much as possible and to get max MPG’s. Also lag is encountered when the engine and transmission are talking to each other trying to anticipate what your next move will be with the throttle. It’s called “Force Value”. There is a soft component of AI in the ECU. So every time you drive your Tacoma you are essentially fighting the ECU for control. The tune puts you back in control and the truck will perform more naturally like we use to see before the eco/emission reducing programming from the factory took over.

OTT has made such a difference on my 2021 Off Road. It feels more capable when towing our 16 foot camper in S4 with ECT on. And just as a daily driver the truck has a lot more spirit. Can break it sideways pretty easily now, if I am trying. Best money you can spend on a 3rd gen tacoma for sure is that tune.

I got the OTT tune done last year and what a difference! I have an 2018 TRD OF and I was able to squeal the tires (by accident) and I have A/T tires. Now, when I press the ECT button, it's literally like a Sport Button on cars. I use it when I need quick acceleration like getting on a busy interstate or trying to squeeze into traffic. For the people asking about improvement in MPG. There are so many factors involved in mpg that the tune itself isn't really going to help. You may see an improvement at first, but because the overall performance of your truck is vastly different, you may drive differently that before. You may step the gas more or drive like your in a sports car which will affect your mpg. I just put a cap on mine and the mpg has stayed relatively the same. I'll be going out of town for Thanksgiving so I'll be able to get a good idea on my Hwy mpg. But nonetheless, the OTT tune is a game changer and worth every penny!

Literally got mine tuned this last weekend with OTT. I put it off until I was out of the factory warranty, but I should have just done it a long time ago. It really makes the truck totally different to drive under 4k rpms, so much quicker response.

Nice video. 👌 Had our local guy (Paul - Pacific Northwest Tuning) tune our 2020 TRD 4x4 Off Road DC with the OTT performance tune last week. Noticed an immediate difference. No more sluggish starts, improved pedal sensitivity, gear hunting is gone and instant power curve improvement. Turn the ECT on and it rockets out of the gate as well as when I step on it. It's still in the "learning" phase so every day it's a little tighter and more responsive. Terrific investment. This is how the Tacoma should have come from the factory. Can't recommend it enough. 👏

I just had this same tune done. Initial impression is that it is a good move. Driving out of Barretts neighborhood, it felt...better but I couldn't put my finger on why. Drove up Parleys Canyon which has a stretch of pretty steep grade. That was where the benefit really shows. The biggest difference is on downshifts. I am not a dog person, but I would describe the change to the behavior of the transmission as going from a psychotic Chihuahua to a mature, obedient Golden Retriever. Instead of cruising along at 2k RPM and jumping suddenly to redline at the slightest hint of a change in grade, the truck adapts predictably and does so at my command, which is a refreshing change. I chose the lowest setting for throttle response and I love it. I will post again after a trip to Southern Utah in a couple of weeks with some MPG numbers.

I got my OTT tune back in November and my already brand new truck felt like a brand new truck again. It felt like it should have from the factory. The difference was instant. From the first time I touched the pedal I could feel the difference. The gear hunting stopped, the motor woke up, and I'm still hitting +21 mpg hwy @75mph on stock wheels.

NICE! I just got the OTT “lite” with the “Spicy Sport” on my ECT button. I had the “mild” on first but it was too much for me in the mountains with snow. The mild would spin out the tires on ice and snow. Making it sort of dangerous. While I liked the “mild” I feel it was too much for my style of gas pedal for mountain living. Having the “Lite” with the “Spicy Sport” on the ECT button IS SOOOOOO SICKK!!! Using the SPICY SPORT when I need to get busy on passing foos and just wanting to rip through the mountains when it’s safe to rip, best upgrade on my truck since I’ve gotten it.

I’ve had the OTT done on my ‘19 Tacoma 3.5 Sport model for two months now. I was experiencing the heat hunting issues with the hills in Virginia and the lack of power and terrible throttle response. This OTT tune has awakened my truck thanks to the professional tuner here in Central Virginia who knows what he is doing. I immediately took a test drive with John (the tuner installer) and knew right away that this truck was like a new truck. I highly recommend this tune and with the automatic transmission you can really tell the difference. The manual trans I’ve been told also have great improvements done afterwards also. I know what I am talking about and for the few hundred dollars I spent, it was definitely worth it. And yes, I tried the Pedal Commander first. It just wasn’t the right device for me. It only took care of the throttle lag and that’s it.

I have had the OTT for a couple months now (2021 TRD OR, auto) with level 1 throttle, and it is such an improvement. Doesn’t make it a racecar (I didn’t expect it to), but the throttle response and smoother acceleration have made me feel much more confident when merging, passing, or pulling in to traffic, and it doesn’t shift all the time anymore. If anyone with a Tacoma is on the fence about the tune just do it, you will be glad you did.

@@DatMeister I never really paid attention to mileage, but the distance to empty on a full tank has gone from 315-320 to 305-310, but I chalk that up to being more throttle happy when I have an empty stretch of road. Also I don't know how accurate that is, because last time I filled up it said 305, and after ~30 miles it said 290 or 294, something like that.

Not sure what ppl are bitching about. I just bought a taco and that thing is fast. It’s laggy a bit but you can manual shift and decide for yourself how to drive. And there’s plenty of torgue to pass quickly. I’ve driven faster cars before and the truck doesn’t feel like it’s that much worse.

@@westcoastplinkin6559 My understanding from several sources is that it has no effect on the warranty, and you can, in fact, have the truck returned to the original tune if you so desire. Believe me, you will not want to go back once you try the OTT.

I had my Tacoma 22' sport tuned after 6k miles with Valley Runner (another variation of the Orange Virus Tune). I had the exact same reaction as you when 1) pulling out of the parking lot and feeling the torque, and 2) driving up a hill and not getting the gear hunting. I average 17-18 MPG driving around the city. I run wildpeaks 265/70/17. i'm at 26k miles and so glad I tuned mine. great video. keep up the good work!

I've had 2 2021 taco off road, I had one tuned with kd max . Now I have a 22 off road and the overland torque tune done about 6 months ago I really enjoy it and did notice about 2 months after tune that fuel mileage dropped about one mile per gallon.

@@gjcline70 Check the map for your local tuner. The most favored tunes are from OTT and KDMax. Either of the two have a huge network of tuners that can get your truck tuned. Some of the tuners are even shared tuners that do both OTT and KDMax.

Hey Chloe! I got my Tacoma OTT tuned and I ended up going back to my tuner to bring my main tune down to the “light” tune to reduce that touchiness off the line. I set my ECT button to medium which acts as my “Sport” mode, and together, they make my driving experience much more enjoyable and less surprising! Hope this helps. Cheers!

I personally have a 2023 off road. I installed the Fukin Tuned performance tuner(like pedal commander). I run it at fukin cruise +1. It drives a little better, but nothing like what she describes here. I do however get roughly 18% better gas mileage, which in my opinion is fantastic and WELL worth the $200 onetime investment

I see a lot of questions on here about fuel mileage after the OTT tune. Like I mentioned in an earlier comment, I had the tune done December 1. Since then I also installed 1” taller tires and a 2” lift all the way around. My mileage averages 16.5 to 18 in town and about 21-22 on the highway. Before these changes I was averaging 18-22. I had the mild tube version because I drive mostly highway miles. Very little off road. I hope this helps answer some of you. One additional comments. I do get down on the throttle more since the tune because I love the feel of the additional power. It’s not a lot but a I can definitely tell the difference. I drive a ‘19 TRD Sport with the 3.5 V6. Automatic 6 speed. Stock rear gears. Cold Air Intake and dual exhaust.

i had it for over 6 months now. Runs damn smooth, gear shifts are super smooth. Does 85-90mph effortlessly. No complaints.

It probably helps longevity of the transmission because it will limit the sloppy gear shifting going back and forth constantly vs shifting less and staying in a gear for longer. I assume flashing a tune with void most if not all warrnty so personally I'm waiting for my warrnty to expire in case it needs to go in for work. These trucks (2023 trd off road long bed) is stright up dog water with stock a tune. Toyta really needed to address it properly a long time ago but never and will do because the 3.5 v6 six speed combo is no more. Engine longevity.... Honestly probably not even testable. Unless your hammer on your truck all time, doesn't matter what tune you have stuff will wear faster vs if you drive "normal"

Just tune it yourself. Have used OrangeVirus tune for years (2019 & 2022 Taco). It costs a bit more up front, but then, you can set it back to stock yourself in 5 minutes. And you're not beholden to a local "tuner" for changes. It's really easy.

There are 3 tuners in Texas that can drive down to your area to assist in getting your truck tuned.

I got the OTT tune in Denver last year. The throttle response was a nice change, but this truck still hunts endlessly for gears on the interstate. I'm hoping gears will finally be the fix.

I got the KDMAX pro tune 2 years ago with the most sensitive pedal option and the seatbelt alarm turned off ...in 10 minutes my Tacoma felt completely different like a WRX 😳it took a while to get used to the sensitivity of the pedal but it made my truck soo much more fun to drive. I have 33 in tires with no gearing and the tune made the truck feel better than stock 🤙🏽

right at 9:40, you can still tell from the sound of the shift and that small little hill, it popped up from 2nd to 3rd. This is the exact same behaviour as stock at low speed and it drives me crazy.

It would depend on what settings you ask for when you get tuned. If it is the regular tune, it will function mostly the same, but will be like activating sport+ in terms of throttle and performance. Other options is Gear Lock Mode, where ECT + Smode = Pseudo Manual Mode for the AT Transmission.

I have been involved in motorsports for most of my life. I'm sorry, but all of these Tacoma tunes are missing a major factor - the dyno. You have to have a controlled environment to properly tune any ECU and the only way to do that is to put your truck on a dyno. No over the air, parking lot tune or road tune is going to give you the best results. He says it himself: they start by dyno tuning but each vehicle is slightly different, customization is completely different, your environment/elevation is different, etc. and what you are essentially getting here is a "base tune". It's enough to get you to a dyno and then the real work begins.

Anything is better then the factory “tune”. I have the Yotawerx tune and it eliminated a lot of the problems that are common with this truck and no dyno needed

The OTT tune is fine tuned on the dyno. Having each truck going on a dyno will result in little further gains but cost definitely more. Most people want the throttle to be more responsive and and have improved shift points, which are spot on with the OTT tune.

These tunes are not changing fuel mapping. They're simple potentiometer multipliers for the accelerator pedal. The tune just increases the values of the accelerator pedal by a set value to trick the ECU into thinking the pedal is being depressed more than it really is. This is why it feels more responsive and twitchier. This is also why the ECU hunts less for gears. The ECU automatically keeps to a gear longer when a higher demand via the accelerator is given.

@@steverinehart787 Technically anything aftermarket that is not install by Toyota or a dealer can void warranty. A tune however is not detectable in most cases by a dealership, as the scanning software used "Tech stream" won't be able to see the difference between the stock ECU code and a Tuned ECU code. My truck has been tuned since 2017, and have brought in my truck for service and warranty with no issues.

Hey Chloe, quick question, after you tuned, when you put the truck in Drive, WITHOUT stepping on the gas pedal, does it jerk? In other words, once you release your foot from the brake, will it jerk and have more throttle response without stepping on the gas pedal?

I have had OTT on my truck now for about 50k miles. No issues at all. The injectors are all stock.
