I've been riding for over 30 years and started doing track days in 2010. At first it was just a few times per year, mixed in with weekend rides in the twisties. I told myself I had it under control, then I started doing more. I stopped riding my Speed Triple and bought an 848, then the occasional track day became more frequent. My work began to suffer, as did my relationships. I stopped riding with other people and only wanted to do track days alone. Then I bought an R1 and everything changed. I became obsessed with track schedules, weather reports, rear-sets, quick-shifters, Supercorsa spv2-4's, lightweight knee sliders... I began losing weight to shave off lap times. My friends began to worry and tried to intervene. They'd invite me on weekend rides, but I declined. I stopped renewing the registration on my bike and bought a van just to transport it to the track. I can't remember the last time I rode on the street. This year, I bought a second house 6 minutes from the entrance of my favorite circuit. Swap the T for a C and ask yourself if doing crack is worth it? Think of your future and your families. Just say no to Track.

You will never learn as much nor as fast as you can learn on a race track. On the street you always have to have some consideration for not being arrested, and you are always limited by the extent of visibility due to the possibility of oncoming traffic, animals wandering into the road, etc. I did my best learning how to ride fast by studying and applying the techniques on the street, for decades. Then I got on a race track and learned more in like 3 track days than I had in over 30 years in the canyons and mountains of San Diego county. There is no comparison. Even if you don't want to get into racing, the level of the skills you learn on track make street riding so much safer.

My first day on a track was for a cornering course last season. By the end of the day I was missing my usual road rides and had the thought, "I'm just going in circles". Then I did a second all-track day... then a third.... now I'm constantly checking for when next season's track days go on sale! Not only is it tons of fun, there's a great community that does track days, and the benefits to my everyday riding (Not to mention the direction mods start heading for your bike to improve the on track experience) couldn't come from anywhere else. It's definitely not a cheap hobby... but neither is having dinner at a restaurant anymore. Less Burger King, more track days!

@pocotaligoswampfox4789 for me, I switched to tires better suited for the track and changed my gearing to get up to speed out of corners quicker. Where I ride is a pretty small but highly technical track. Adding modifications that improve my track day experience is a direct result of getting my bike on a track and then deciding what I can do to make that better. Pretty basic, really... no need to get so excited.

At 49, I decided to get a Suzuki GSXR750 because I have always wanted a sport bike and having moved to Phoenix there are some tracks to ride. I went to my first track day Nov 10 and it was so much fun. I am fortunate that there is a track about 30 minutes away which makes it very convenient. For that money I would rather buy another riding jacket, another pair of gloves, and probably have enough left over for 2 tanks of gas!! Seems like a more practical and fun way to spend my money! I had more fun than I ever dreamed was possible, and I learned more riding skills in that 2 hours than in the previous 15 years on the street. And that was only the first day. Sorry to hear, but you're going to get those BMW types everywhere - they think $ makes them better at everything. I had my most fun on a race setup 250 two-stroke twin back in the day and I didn't care about being beaten; it was about me and the bike and while I did good times I never got to the point of being better than the bike. I'm sure those litre riders are scared shitless of the power under them and will never, ever get close to how fast their bike can actually go. I would say, do track days and don't worry about the elites, don't worry about winning, just treat your relationship with the bike and track as something unique to you. Because, I guarantee you, the top MotoGP riders don't give a shit about the egos and money around them. They are still trying to reach the peak of their ability to read the track and to know the absolute limits of the bike, and themselves.

I got my license and first bike (RS 660) a year ago with the intention of riding on track. I was completely hooked after the first track day and ended up doing 10 track days over the season! In my area in southern Sweden we are blessed with three tracks within an hours driving distance. There are a few clubs that arrange track days. One more geared towards rider safety and advanced riding skills, but they are willing teach you racing techniques and basically you can ride as fast as you want as long as you are respectful for the safety of other riders. The other clubs are more geared towards racing and have days that are split up by skill level. The cost is $120-200 (converted to USD) for a day and ~$50 memberships for the clubs. You need real leathers so gear is around $1000 if you buy it new, but that's a one time cost. Anyone who wants to ride on track should watch Simon Crafar's Motovudu series a few times. If you take it seriously and practice, it will make you both fast and safe.

The biggest issue I have is every track near me in Texas is 2+ hours away and anywhere from $250-550 for a single day. So once you add in fuel costs, possible hotel stay, etc that's $600-1200+ for just 1 weekend....... I'd much rather pay that type of money travelling and riding all the fun public roads and experiencing new parts of the U.S. and getting a vacation out of it at the same time. I just can't justify spending that type of money every time there's a trackday and using my vacation time to free up my weekends from work. I'll maybe do 2-4 trackdays a year just to try and improve my skills and become a better rider and experience the cool tracks if possible but it's not feasible for someone like me who rides every day i'm off if the weather is good. I can just throw my gear on and go hit local twisty roads to keep my skills sharp and in check rather than doing track once every 2 months or w/e is affordable. Sure the street is dangerous but it's easily accessible and a different type of feeling..... I just don't have the funds to justify becoming a track junkie and that's why most of us will stay street squids until we're making $120k+ a year.

I loved my zx6r. However, I only broke triple digits about 2 times. That was by choice. I'm not saying that I stuck strictly to the posted 65mph. I just enjoyed the wind and open freedom. I had a couple of people ask me why I had a fast bike like that if I wasn't going to push it?. My answer was "because I like it. I live the way it felt to ride a sport bike. Mostly because I wanted it." Another thing is that I have agoraphobia, so I ride to get away from people. Going to the track does the opposite of that.

Did my first track day last weekend. It...was...awesome! Felt like 22 again. Also, the community of riders was great. Better than I expected. I think I got more out of it being on the other side of 50 as I can better afford it than when I first started riding and there's less ego involved that when I first started riding decades ago. Plus I realized that 98% of my regular riding is inter-city and highway. I see twists just a few times a year, but having had my share of shaves, I prefer to save the money to let loose on the track.

Back in the early 70s when I did track days I was also a street squid. On track I rode anything with wheels, including a Yamaha factory 250 two stroke twin. The upshot is that I realised the imperative to be a fast rider on the road was just a fantasy. Once I was comfortable on track it was obvious it was nothing like road riding. The purity of track riding was what I aspired to. Road riding after was kind of ho hum. And many years later I haven't lost the feeling of track riding. I am a much more careful roadster and much safer too.

The track allows you to literally see your limitations, i.e., "If I crash, how do I get home?" vs "I see god then I brake." because you are sponsored. Having said that, slow speed skills are just as challenging, some cones a vacant strip mall parking lot. If can only do 1, I would personally do the slow speeds skills simply because it translates to everyday riding. And if you get the chance to go to a track day, the translation of those skills will bear fruit.

I think I would want to do track days if there was a race track reasonably close to where I live. If I did though, I think I would want to have a dedicated track day bike, one that I wouldn't mind too much if it took a little damage - like what's-his-name with his old SV650.

Tracks are too expensive and inaccessible if you're not rich or don't live next to one. Nearest one to me is 300 miles. Driving 6 hours (time + fuel) to go pay exorbitant fees just to get on the track, pass inspection, the full leathers, bring your own shade tent and food, dragging your tools and emergency contact and a couple Stephen King novels to last through the long waits... higher life insurance, better health insurance, racing club dues, racing license, double the tires, tools, fluids, fuel, tuning, and training. Too rich for my blood, sir. I'll just be the scourge of the open highway, thanks anyway. It's a cute idea, though. I'll be on the lake road, dodging elk and wild turkeys and day-drunk contractors with ladders hanging off their trucks cutting the blind corners until my non-traction-controlled early-2000's literbike finds my Five Damp Pine Needles In A Row To Valhalla. I think he mainly avoided it simply because it varies so much, my nearest track is €195 for a trackday, if I go to a smaller track 2 hours away I'd pay €135 for a trackday, I could also go to a bigger track but that's €295 for a day, there's other small tracks not too far away that would only cost me €100 a day or less. All these prices are reasonable, however I've also seen people in this comment section saying their nearest track would be over 1000 a day and there's no other options in the area, others start at over 300 a day, there's just so much variety you can't really put a price on it

@ for the average person that rides a motorcycle, that’s a lot of money. You could spend the day carving canyons and only spend $40- 50 on gas. That works out to 4 days of twisties with your friends, vs one day of track turns with only the buddies that could afford to dump that much on one time. Then they would have to save up again to be able to do that again for one day. It doesn’t add up. That’s why everyone is out here racing on public roads. Once it becomes affordable, people will do track days.

The closest track to me (1800 km away) charges $300.00 for 2 hours. That would fill my tank about 15 times! 🙂

@@FastSundayflyer so if you are paying $300 for 2 hrs, are you the only one on the track for those 2 hrs? Or are there multiple people on the track at the same time, that all paid $300 for those same 2 hrs? And if so wouldn’t that hinder your learning, having to be stuck behind other n00bs as well?

Hey @Yammie, what are your thoughts on tracking a Sportster? Is it worth it, or just save up for a sport bike?
@langhamp8912
@langhamp8912 4 күн бұрын
I've seen a number of Sportsters and other Harleys on the track, but they were all of a specific type that had the footpegs and handlebars in a standard position instead of the gynecological examination position of most Harleys and other cruisers.

@langhamp8912 ive got a 48, so right now, I have front controls, and standard bars, but I want to go to a mid control with dual front disks, but not sure if it's really worth it in a cost vs fun aspect

would you say a track day is a good learning experience for riders of all types of bikes? I live near a lot of nice twisties, but they are so rough it would be better if they were unpaved.

Track still some rules that biker need to follow, for beginner hard to follow that make them get banned or black flag. And i think track need some days only for beginner, my first time on track i got black flag due to always get wide on turn and "become danger to other rider"

A vast majority of riders arent going out to be street rossie and the sales of super sports and 600's and such is proving as such. Most ride to just enjoy it and relax. One thing to also remember is it stains your mind to only be able to ride super sports. I mean hell Yammie you cant even ride a GS right...Cruisers, adventure, sport, supersport, sport touring, etc all have different ride styles and going to the track...ruins your ability to ride every other bike style right because "Track makes you a better ride" Mind set which, it doesnt, it makes you a faster rider but you dont need to be fast on the streets. I mean just watching you and some of my friends who go to the track taking off from a stop light is so annoying because it takes you fucking AGES i grow old and moldy waiting for you and my friends to take off its so bad...

Try sitting on bikes in a dealership. You will quickly learn that some bikes seem to fit you like a glove. On other bikes, you will hate the riding position right away. Also check how hard it is to hold the bike upright. A first bike that is heavy and also top heavy is not a fun bike to learn on (ie. VSTROM 800)! That should give you a good starting point! Cheers! 😀
