Ok so in the Barbie movies, it's Barbie AS (name). This is because in Barbie lore, Barbie is an actor. She stars in all of these movies, aside from a Fairy Secret and Fashion Fairytale, and the shows. These focus on her as an actor, but aside from that, she's just playing a role.

I love how much you misinterpreted that first song. Barbie(pink dress) is in an arranged marriage with a man she’s never met who’s a king of a different kingdom because of the kingdom’s poverty. Blue dress is a victim of the poverty and is “in debt” to the woman she works for. Both of them are forced to do things they don’t want to because of poverty and their entire lives are controlled by someone else.

Princess and the Pauper actually has a cute little fandom that gush over how adorable these two are and they have pointed out that the pauper was downplaying her situation and she was the one initiating the entire "I'm just like you" chorus to not make the princess feel bad for her. They said there was no way making a gown was as easy as she described it as in the song compared to how it would be done realistically, and also bc technically she wouldn't be having such a hard time if it was that easy. Also, she didn't mention any financial problems to the princess.

@woggersonsawesome4916 Жыл бұрын
“Do you want context?” “No thanks!” *Proceeds to criticize poetic scene without context* To clarify Mathew: In the song “Girl like You” the Princess and the Pauper are bonding over the validation of Trauma. While Erika(Pauper) is an indentured servant and Annalise is a Princess in an economically arranged Marriage, they both have the same valid feeling of feeling trapped and helpless in their life while also feeling a responsibility to complete the role the world has assigned them. And despite their situations are totally different, their feelings and emotions are both valid. It’s a story told mostly through dialogue alone, because 2004 Barbie Movies didn’t have a super large animation budget to create flashy action or affects-which is why you’ll see mostly animal sidekicks performing said role in the early movies-and had to tell their story through the character interactions alone. You should totally watch the full movie-and especially listen to the dialogue-because it’s truely a work of art for its time

Thank you 😭 that's really well articulated! I usually like his reactions a lot so I was excited when i saw he was doing barbie songs! But his reaction to that song was driving me crazy. Barely made it through with him just missing the point so badly after explicitly refusing to get the context. I feel like even just watching "Free" first, before "a girl like you", would have helped that a lot.
@turnipcrazy

@daisy3525 Жыл бұрын
@@turnipcrazy oh, that line embedded itself in my brain and altered my brain chemistry. And it speaks volumes to the beneath-surface similarities between those two, their shared drive to do what is right and what their duty calls for, even as opposed to what they truly desire. Their circumstances are different but their core struggle is the same and that line in particular encompassed all of that so well! Honestly, Barbie songs had no right being as good as they were, but hell if they didn't deliver on everything.

I mean, the girl in the blue dress in the first song is the one who insisted they were alike. The princess was like, “you sure about that? Because I definitely just said I get my breakfast on a silver tray and you definitely just said you have fetch your own eggs from a mile away…” It’s actually really sweet and generous-hearted of Erika (blue dress) to find common ground with Anneliese (pink dress) instead of being envious or bitter.

I think it says a lot that the pauper in the princess in the pauper was the one to first say that they were similar. It would sound high handed starting from the princess, however from the pauper it’s actually quite daring and empowering. In another story if a peasant girl dared to say that she was no different than the princess it would probably kill her. They are nearly identical and have similar personalities and are able to empathize with the common reality of being born into responsibilities. The message I am a girl like you is also way better than a I’m not other girls mindset.

The fact that he refused context and then started criticising Annalise was really hard to get through without raging… And also the fact that he downplayed the duties of a royal - they literally have the lives of all their people depending on their actions and decisions. They may have material luxuries but even in real history it’s a well-established fact that those material luxuries come at the price of their freedom - if the need arises they themselves (their lives and marriages) become pieces to trade and barter with. I honestly think part of it may just be that he’s a guy and thinking from a male perspective (which is why he doesn’t see why Annalise’s situation is actually perfectly comparable to Erica’s). Annalise is smart and perfectly capable of leading her Kingdom but because of her gender most of the people around her see her not as a potential leader but basically a vase to be sold off for marriage (as though her only worth is to be traded off). Additionally, she’s not allowed to pursue her love for the sciences or behave in any way that is different from how a princess should be (ie the stereotypical feminine hobbies and skills etc). Added to that is the fact that she is about to be sold off in marriage to a stranger and because it is her duty as princess and for the sake of the many she can’t even reject that marriage. Erika is suffering because she is unable to pursue her dream of being a singer due to being duty bound to the owner of the dress shop. Annalise is similarly suffering because she is being forced into a mould to fit the needs of her people while also being sold off to a stranger and she is also similarly unable to escape because of duty.

1. We need to skip past this whole "out of context" bit and just get a full Princess and the Pauper reaction. Please and thank. 2. Didn't know I needed this but now I will happily accept a collab reaction with you and caitlin mckillop for the 80s treasure that is Barbie and the Rockers (or the Sensations as my old VHS cover sleeve said for some reason)

My fav barbie movie is Rock n'Royals and you have no idea how happy it makes me seeing you react to one of it's songs. The songs are absolute bop and I still sing the finale mashup every now and then. I don't usually see people reacting to this movie or the secret door(my #2) And this made me so happy. I'm 17 now and Barbie will always have a special place in my heart.

So, I think the important takeaway of "Girl Like You" is that it shouldn't matter how different the problems are. Just because one person might have things comparatively worse, that does not necessarily negate the problems of someone who has things comparatively better. Erika (the girl in blue) is a very positive-minded kind girl, while the princess is sheltered and naive. They've met and want to be friends, so Erika finds common ground. They both long to escape their problems and follow their dreams. They're both trapped in situations that hurt their very spirit. Regardless of the differing severity, they have the same problem, and they each deserve to be free of it. The very root of the problem is the same, so they are the same. Thus, they understand each other. (Also, their singing voices were by the same voice actor. That's probably why it's suck an amazing harmony.)

a little context on the barbie lore,in the first couple movies barbie tells her little sister some fantasy stories wich we get to watch and teaches her (and us) a life lesson by the end of it,then the other movies are just roles she plays as an actress hence why she goes by different names in them ,this part is explained in her two movies fairy secret and fashion fairytale where she is herself and we get to see her real life play out,in recent years tho it has been switching between her acting roles and her real life with her sisters.

"I'm Just Like You" was a song in a movie that tried its best to let little girls know life wasn't a competition with other girls/women. We were all in the same situation in our own way. Talked about female solidarity and friendship. And hoped we didn't fall into the "I'm not like other girls" trap. I love this movie so fucking much. Especially the bloopers in the end.

okay, just for context in the second song: if the queen dies Barbie would become queen. if she married striker (or whatever his name was, he's fabulous but unmemorable) he would not become King. "A ruling queen's husband is called a Prince Consort because the title of King is only given to a monarch who inherits the throne and can reign." As he has no royal blood in him, he has no claim to the throne after Barbie's death, as there would be many people within her bloodline who the throne would go to. for example, if Queen Lizzie 2 had died before Phillip, he had a technical claim to the tthrone as he was an estranged cousin of hers many times removed, BUT as she had children, they have a stronger claim to the throne. Also, HI from England :)

I really, really hope you continue this! Watching a KZbinr actually compliment Barbie movie content rather than berate it is refreshing to someone who grew up mesmerized by their songs. And though I want to spout out recommendation after recommendation, I really hope you give Barbie as the island princess a chance. Personally I think every single song in there is great, but if you listen to “right here in my arms” the first version and the climax version, I really believe you will love it. This was an awesome video!

It's so funny that people don't know that Barbie is really good, like it's old and all, but it's fun. Great songs, nice characters, and when we talk about the barbie universe it's pretty complex and fun to try organizing. Even the dreamhouse was so cool that they play with the barbie doll things

I especially love the songs 'Free' from Princess and the Pauper, 'I Need To Know' from the Island Princess and all songs from Princess and the Popstar and the songs from Diamond Castle. 'All For One' from Three Musketeers is also a banger.

Early Barbie movies (which I actually saw, as opposed to the later ones which were better in that aspect but I had grown up one year too much), had waaay better (and catchier) music than animation. That and they had consistently unforgettable plotlines that as a kid, genuinely embedded themselves in your brain. So the franchise was set in stone from the very start. (And kids could not tell good from bad animation.)

I love that you love the Rock 'n Royals medley so much. To clarify: there are two different schools Rock and Royalty and they put on a compitions between the two schools for the land. Whoever won got the land adjacent. Rock and Royalty students didn't like this so with the help of Princess Courtney (Barbie) and Erica (a Pop star) who accidently got sent to the wrong schools they decided to work together to save the schools. But there is a twist and I'm not telling you what it is.

If you like the harmonies in "I am a girl like you" I'd recommend "free" and "if you love me for me" from the same movie. Also the choral arrangements in Barbie and the 12 dancing princesses are disturbingly incredible. Have a nice day!

'Barbie of Swan Lake', 'Barbie in the Nutcracker', 'Barbie as Rapunzel', 'Barbie and the Three Musketeers' and 'Barbie Presents Thumbelina' are titles reflecting that Barbie was portrayed as an actress or storyteller. Its meant to symbolise little girls playing with their Barbie pretending to be a Princess and such. It's a super smart strategy! Barbie continued this on and off until 2015. I... Disagree with the statement about not feeling sorry for royalty ahah. Princess Anneliese's story is all about how she's royalty so she cannot live independently and make choices for herself - similar how Erika cannot live her life as she works for debt. They are different, but alike, hex the first song. Anneliese was in love with her best friend/tutor and didn't want to be in an arranged marriage. Yes, Nick and Nack *are* some of the best Barbie movie characters, and Preminger (who sings "How Can I Refuse") was voiced by Martin Short which is why his voice changes pitch. Context is important for these songs, so you might wanna watch the movies next time to better understand the plot explained aha
