As an American who has seen countless rebuilds in every sport where teams let go of aging players on high wages for promising, yet unproven, young prospects, it still baffles me that football people are just now realizing what Chelsea's strategy was.
@fuzzyhair321Ай бұрын
Football especially the English ones were always able to buy players from smaller clubs but that is now too expensive to do. So youth it is
@KainaanSlater81Ай бұрын
I’ve been saying this all along it’s both gratifying and infuriating that people are now realising it! It’s always been clear with Boehly coming from a baseball ownership background that he wanted to sign every young star possible to long contracts in the beginning in order to save keep having to buy multiple players each transfer window after. Either they’re buying young talent to add to the team or simply buying young talent to sell in future for profit. Plus the lower wages leaning towards incentive-based increases is another thing Boehly has brought over from the US style too which also can’t be forgotten about.

I couldn’t agree more! I haven’t got an interest in much US sports, and I just knew that Boehly was doing good work with the dodgers. But the second they came in, it was SO obvious that this was their plan!! I’ve been almost pulling my hair out at some of the things the media and my friends were saying about Chelsea. This has always been their vision!! And the whole bomb squad stuff over the past summer was so flipping stupid- these players aren’t good!! Just look at Sterling now! Credit to Boehly and Blueco- this is how you rebuild a club 🙌🏼

The Monaca twins have a tendency to just stop playing well and Tosin is not just up to WC level imo, tho i do believe hes a great player. Sanchez is imo a bit of a self-handicap that we have; his decision-making and passing is just so incredibly suspect. To be fair, other than City and Liverpool, Chelsea do have a pedigree of winning it in recent years with Conte and Mourinho. For all of Arsenal's good work over the last 5 five seasons, its still been 20 years since they've last won it. Sure this is a new Chelsea hierarchy without that foundation, however, Maresca's Championship-winning season and tutelage under Pep in City's best ever season should not be sneered at. That experience is invaluable to a budding tactician in Pep's ilk. He knows how long the gruelling struggle and slug the campaign is hence his commitment to two squads, which is another feather in our cap, our squad depth. Maresca's job now is keeping everyone focused and hungry. We just need to show that nuance and savvy to consistently compete with established top 4 contenders and beat the rest.

@TheLuckyDevilАй бұрын
Respectfully, I think you have it all wrong regarding the "clarity" and "cohesion" of the squad planning. The plan was always a full clearout and a full rebuild from the squad they inherited. Following the initial summer 22 window of Boehly as interim sporting director, the signings have always followed a clear vision of exciting, dynamic young players to grow together as a squad. We were never meant to compete in 22/23 and understood 23/24 would be a building year, so we treated it as such. They knew guys like Ziyech, Mount, Havertz, Sterling etc. weren't part of the team's future and they treated them as such to focus on bringing in the new singings they actually wanted. The whole "40 man squad" thing was never an actual issue as we knew who the core of the team was and had planned departures. They speedran the rebuild process, which had some ugly side effects, but was the right decision. Wouldn't be surprised to see Man United try the same thing soon. What's really made the difference for Chelsea this year is: 1) Maresca is a much better manager tactically than poch 2) We aren't plagued by an injury crisis anymore 3) The squad of young players has now had an extra year to grow together and build a true team. You bring up a good point about finding a team identity. It was never an issue of poor squad building or mismanagement from BlueCo. The talent was always there, it just needed time and the right manager.
