This was the end of an era in several ways. This was Howard Schnellenberger's final game as coach of OU. It was also the last football game conducted under the Big 8 Conference game between 2 members of the conference before 4 Texas schools joined in 1996 to make it the Big 12. It was also the last year Nebraska and Oklahoma were scheduled to meet every year, as once the conference expanded, the schools were placed in separate divisions and were no longer guaranteed an annual meeting. Nebraska has since moved on to the Big 10 where their primary rival is Iowa (after 15 years of playing Colorado to close the season), while OU has focused on its rivalries with Oklahoma State (which now generally ends both teams' seasons) and Texas (which is still played in the Cotton Bowl during the Texas State Fair).

I hate to see a Power like Nebraska beaten down like that. That program should only lose 2 or 3 games at most a year and should be in the title talk every year. I am a die hard Sooner fan but I have respect for classy and respectful programs like Nebraska. I only wish Oklahoma and Nebraska would setup a game every year as one of the out of conference games. To this day, the deepest and most powerful college team ever assembled. Name your team, they come up Fourth and Twenty against this Cornhusker Juggernaut. Howard Schnellenberger was an assistant under the legendary Bear Bryant at Alabama. Even the mighty Bear never witnessed a team to match these mighty Huskers. Not even the 1971 Nebraska team, that annihilated Alabama 38-6 in the 1972 Orange Bowl. This game was Four Quarters of Bad Karma for Miamis 31-30 upset of Nebraska in the 1984 Orange Bowl. The reason was a three headed monster not equaled to this day. POWER. SPEED. DEPTH. The latter factor was their biggest advantage of all. The 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers had more GOOD players down through their bench, than any team you could possibly imagine. Three, Four and Five deep everywhere!! More importantly, a coaching staff that knew how to employ this King Solomons Mine of riches like no other. Unbelievably, after this debacle, Nebraska destroyed the Florida Gators in the Fiesta Bowl 62-24. A whipping FAR WORSE than the final score. Nebraska rampaged through the Gators for more than 500 rushing yards. The Gators were held to minus rushing yardage!! No college team ever controlled the scrimmage line like the 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers. And none ever will.

Sure right , an atrocious coach got good for 1 year. * Synder was 5-36 against top 10 teams while at KSU. Enuf said. * Neuhiesel was an awful coach with his own players. 2 wins above .500 with his own recruits. Maybe, prob he was a joke of a coach on balance. In 95, VT and KSU finished in the top 10 for the 1st time ever, Northwestern first time in 32 yrs, KS, 1st time in 22 yrs In 95 the pickings were so slim but the pollsters had to rank someone, right. Watched it again...makes me glad I lived in the glory days of Big Eight football. After the blowout win against Steve Superior's UF (or was it FU?) it seemed NU was poised to kick serious ass in the new Big 12. But the shorthorns always seemed to have our number. Now, with the Big 10, it seems like we've taken even a further step back.

losing to Makovic in the 96 big 12 conference game was a shortcoming alright esp since Makovic tried real hard to give the win to Osborne. Go watch it. 4&1 on their own 27 leading by 3 and Makovic goes for it. Clearly he thought, I just screwed the conf out of big money by beating Neb, how can I "fix" things.

Rob Johnson just when I think you couldn’t be more stupid, you make the biggest dumbest comment ever. Makovick was trying to give it to Osborne? If would of wanted, don’t you think he would of punted it? Or even try to run it instead knowing we could of easily stoped the run? Texas wanted to win that game, Makovick wanted to make statement. They wanted to win that game.
@robjohnson88613 жыл бұрын
@@sorney98 you stupid bit*h. You never ever, look something up before responding. Texas had thrown 2 interceptions in the gamet. Neb had returned 1 punt for 7 yds. Without a doubt to punt was the safest thing Makovick could have done. Again, he tried to give Neb a shot at winning by passing there.

The year before, Nebraska beat a better team in Miami than the Gators. So the result to me wasn't surprising. What was appalling was the gap in preparation between Nebraska and Florida. That was the biggest thing that allow y'all to win as decisively as y'all did.

This team was a damn good team and Oklahoma to it's credit, did what you are supposed to do fundamentally to slow down Nebraska. Now, I won't call this team the greatest ever. I really don't give that title to any team because football is about matchups. With that said, this team and Alabama 92 were my two favorites of the 1990's. I would have paid to watch the two teams play each other. We certainly would have found out more about the two of them and what their capabilities were. I think that game would have been low scoring though. The winner may not have gotten out of single digits. Certainly, the defense 'Bama 92 had would have been a darn sight better and more capable than Miami defense Nebraska beat the year before and the Florida defense Nebraska annihilated later that year. Many that defense as the most dominant of the past 50 yrs.
