this is exactly right.. if OU went in the SEC with a Stinkin Lincoln lead team, they would average 8 wins, IF THAT. this is such a breathe of fresh air. Venables actually knows HIMSELF and is a God fearing man, he will be up for the challenge and has the awareness to know exactly what he has in his players. OUTSTANDING hire. not to mention his high energy as a HC could improve the overall rowdiness for Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Coach Stoops is an important ingredient in all this. OU’s had him out nonstop shoring up recruiting and plugging up the transfer portal. Venables is a great hire because building the OU defense will be critical against the SEC, but the offensive coordinator hire for OU will be equally critical. In retrospect, Riley’s reputation as a “quarterback whisperer” may be vapor; great offensive mind, sure, but Baker, Kyler and Caleb are just brilliant no matter what, and I think Spencer got a bum rap because a lot of his problems were an offensive line failing to give him just one more second before the pocket collapsed. Tough to replace a center like Creed Humphrey, for just one example. It IS a team sport, after all.

Aranda is clearly a good coach, but I don't know if he had any interest in leaving Baylor. Might be a good fit for him. Venables has a lot of history at OU, familiarity with the AD and much of the coaching staff, and a tendency to stay at a program for a long time. Go look at the welcome he received at the airport. OU knows and loves him, and he knows and loves OU. Combine that with his defenses over the years and you have a combination that looks like a great fit for the program.
