I’ve been subscribed to your channel for a while now and just wanted to tell you that you do a great job. Just yesterday I bought an Okuma ABF 40 Avenger reel used on eBay. I have been totally amazed by the quality and design of these reels. For a hobby I collect and restore vintage surf spinning reels made before 1980. I think I have around 240 reels in the collection. I use my vintage reels for fishing almost exclusively. I got this Okuma because I wanted to try fishing with a bait feeder reel. The Shimano and Penn bait feeders are so complicated and difficult to take care of. My Okuma came in the box with all the papers, s spare spool, and an extra housing seal all for $30 incl. shipping. The reel is in mint condition. I like the Okuma for the simplicity of their design. I have no difficulty servicing this reel and the engineering of the design is very straightforward. I usually don’t buy the more modern reels out there and I avoid those made in China but this Okuma is a definite exception. I can’t think of a better value for a bait feeder reel! Thanks for doing this video! -- Chris

Thanks for keeping this video up. In a moment of distraction my ABF90 tipped over straight into the wash at the beach. Sucker had sand in every crevice. I had to take mine apart deeper but I appreciate your video for getting me part way through. Mine was so close to roasted that I blasted the guts under the sink sprayer with dish soap. Cleaned up pretty decent though.

After watching Zoffinger I also started using these reels. Purchased my 4th one tonight after finishing a custom rod building course here in Orlando with Mudhole. I've been using the baitfeeders for 9 months and LOVE them. It's all I fish with now.

Great video! I am a huge fan of these reels! Bought one a while back to test it out and fell in love with it. Now I have (4)abf90's & (2)80's in my collection. Ended up cleaning most of my reels over the weekend thanks to your video. Saved me a lot of $. Was very easy, educational, and most importantly, now have a better understanding of how my reels work! Thanks!

I have two of these that I give to people I take on my boat who know nothing of what they’re doing. I recommend servicing the bail and roller as often or more often than the main gear and shaft. These last a long time I’ve had them for five years now and no issues.

Thanks for the detailed instructions, great video. I love Okumas and just ordered an abf-20 for freshwater trout fishing. I had one of the early avengers and I currently have a Hardstone HS30, loved the Avenger, never seemed like a "cheap" reel when I was using it. Didn't look as fancy as other reels, but who the hell cares...I actually prefer no-frills, simple designs. The Hardstone is an awesome reel, marketed through Cabela's for a short time...wish i could find more.

I love my avengers. I'll try to find some Hardstones, sounds interesting!

Captain House, Ive been looking all over for a way to put together the spring and the bail. I watched your video and as you described, it is extremely difficult to reassemble. If possible, can you upload a video or give me extremely detailed instructions as to how i would make my reel work again. Right now it isn't opening all the way, i hear a click when opening but it doesn't click on its way back. HELP!!!! thanks

Fantastic detailed dis/re-assembly/lube video (I freekin love these reels). One question - I managed to get my reel (ABF 40) taken apart, lubed, and reassembled, however the drag doesn't seem to be working now... any suggestions?

+Robert Stiles - The only thing that I can think of is to check the sprocket that the spool sits on. Make sure that is set right, it shouldn't spin. Thanks for watching!

Good job I would of checked the washers that's not a big deal when you use these as you do. I also got introduced to bait feeders from Marty. Great channel. Very impressed Thank you

Captain I made the mistake of taking the 3 screws and plate off for the anti reverse and a Vshaped spring/lever popped out. I can't figure out how it goes back in. I have 2 other Okuma reels but don't want to mess with them. My question how do you reinstall the V shaped spring/lever? The schematic shows part # 800- part number 28000256 called anti-reverse re-lever. Would appreciate any help on AV-65b reel. thanks Leo Johnson
@williamdaves7089 жыл бұрын
+Leo Johnson - I popped the little clip out of my reel last night, so its fresh for me - pull the anti-reverse "rod" out of the back of the reel and you will see when the clip would slide down onto the flat spot after you insert the rod back in the reel. Its very simple to insert the clip into the slot as it will slide over the rod. Look at it with a good light and will see how it goes together.

Nice. I use the ABF 40 for catfish. I'm as impressed as you are in terms of the quality-per-dollar.

Excellent video, I have the ABF 40, 50 and 90 series. For me they are the best reels. Your video is very useful to me. If you could put subtitles in Spanish, you could get more subscribers because in this language we don't see the maintenance of that model. Thanks for everything.

Okay great, I’ll see what I can do about the CC in Spanish. Been thinking a lot about that. Thanks for watching! 👍🏼

Thanks buddy, just cleaned mine. My penn fierce also got soaked in saltwater overnight but it was smooth as ever, but the akuma was grinding on itself. But its all good now
@HouseMadeUS10 жыл бұрын
Good to hear. You aren't doing it right if you don't soak a rod and reel from time to time.

My abf 50 has an issue, where the spool spins like there is no drag. ? Like the anti reverse is broken or some thing or the main shaft is broken I can turn it backwards by hand
@TNRVG8 жыл бұрын
Does the outside corrode or rust up? I had one a few months and I thought the screws were possibly rusting up or corrosion was happening. I was only fishing in fresh water.
@HouseMadeUS8 жыл бұрын
No it shouldnt corrode much, especially in fresh water. Maybe hit up Okuma and see what they say.

recently i purchased the abf 90 and right out of the box there is a weird bell like ting when reeling. it happens when the spool is in the lowest position any idea why its doing this?

Also, nice to know see some one put as much wear and tear on these reels as you. Now I know what to expect in terms of longevity and maintenance. Have you tried the B-series Avenger?

+Mike G - I love these reels. I am a big fan. I put them through hell and they just keep working. I'm editing a vid right now where I catch a 6ft nurse shark on the 90 reel. She rocked it like she was brand new & she is 5 years old!

My okuma abf50 has a issue with the spool spinning and letting the line out like there is no drag but my dial is turned up. The anti reverse and everything works fine it's just the spool itself isn't functioning properly. Any ideas on what the problem is. ?

Good lord, you had that reel sumerged in water and you didn't take a part the most sensitive part, you should have taken apart the 2 bearing that go in the shaft (the one way bearing and the ball bearing) , instead of that you just added grease, so the humidity or corrosion already built up there stays there......
