Last time I serviced a similar reel for the first time.... Those tiny springs are a nightmare to re-install, especially the spring for the anti-reverse mechanism. It flew off during dis-assembling and at first, I didn't see where it belongs to. The schematic wasn't helpful either, it didn't show where to put it back at the exact position (one end and the other end)... finally, I discovered how the anti-reverse mechanism should work and what the function of the spring was (and it's position!). After 40 minutes (!) struggling to put it back, I was able to finish the job. Phewww...lessons learned! Thank you Dennis for showing us (in depth) how to dis-, re-assemble and service al these different reels. I almost watch every day, and enjoy it! I hope to see the requested video on a Penn "big pit" surf (Longcast) reel in the near future 🤗. Thanks again.

I hate working on baitrunner reels. In fact, I won’t own one or work on one. I have a few friends who have reel shops that refuse to work on them. In truth these friends largely work on mostly older reels. I am intimidated by the complexity of these reels. There are just too many surprises and often too many springs. Dennis, you are truly gifted to work on these things. One thing I am very good at is putting bearings back together when. They all fall out. Remember that double open bearing on that French Brettton reel I showed you. Very good video though!

2nd Chance Tackle you are indeed a saint! Well maybe not a saint but you get at least an honorable mention for working on those reels. I wish I could see a video of the first time you tried. I’ll bet that would be entertaining. I’ve always wondered after looking at so many of your videos if you are truly as patient and calm as you appear. I can confess that absolutely I am not! I lost my religion once trying to remove a broken screw in the rotor of a Mitchell 488. I think that rotor is still orbiting the earth after what I did to it. LOL

Well Dennis, that was one heck of a video. My arthritic hands would have had parts and pieces slung all over everywhere. If I had to do what you just did, I would be a dedicated cane pole fisherman. I enjoy all your videos, and this is an example of engineering overkill. The little lady on the production line for this reel had very small and steady hands.

I often wonder how some reels do come together and If there are little tricks to the install. Sometimes I struggle because I don't get the way they assembler did it, but eventually I figure it out. I think it is like trying to put a part on a car engine after it is in the car as opposed to how the part was installed before they put it in the car. Also, general wear in the reel over time changes tolerances, clearances and parts don't go in as easy as they did new. Thanks David - stay well - Dennis

That is why a reel in bag is common. It needs a lot of patience.

You are right. An it needs attention to detail as well. Most folks forget the removal sequence that the orientation of parts during disassembly. That's why I recommend the pictures and the schematic diagrams. As for shooting springs and missing parts...... Thanks for watching - Dennis

Can you do the Okuma RTX next? I have one that needs cleaning and lubricating since I bought it about 8 years ago and I haven't done anything to it simply because I don't want to mess it up. That reel have been dragged into the water by a large catfish and I fished it out by snagging it with a treble hook! That reel is an awesome reel! Just needs some serious cleaning.

Joyce - It is! and it is twice broken, one with a bad reel foot, which rarely happens in the age of graphite, and the other with chewed up pot-metal gears. Hmmm. In defense, the reel is around $75 and I guess you get what you pay for. Best wishes - Dennis

I'm trying to replace the rotor on my cdx-65 and the spool bushing will not come off. I removed the c-clip but there seems to be a larger diameter thread on the shaft making it bind. I've tried pulling off with quite a bit of force but it won't budge.

I'm not sure what the problem is, but the best thing to do would be to remove the axle shaft by disconnecting it from the crosswind block incited the gear housing. That way you won't worry about bending or damaging the axle shaft - Dennis

Hey Dennis, I have a cdx 80 I tried to service. Everything went OK until everything was re-assembled but the anti-reverse switch doesn't work. Do you know what problem it could be and what is the possible solution? I've been stuck on this problem for 6 months now and I can't figure it out. Appreciate your help.

That's hard to say without seeing the reel. There are two springs that control the A/R function. One on the toggle and the other on the clutch. If the switch isn't working, the spring may not be holding the cam in place. If the A/R isn't working then the clutch spring may not be on. if you cannot move the A/R switch, then the bearing plate may nor be positioned properly. Sorry I can't help to pinpoint it further - Dennis
