I actually make my own solution of iron acitate (virtually the same effect as what your doing) by puting some 4/0 steel wool in a jar of white vinegar and letting it sit for a few days. The vinegar oxidizes the steel wool. And for a tannen pretreatment try black tea, it works especially good on pine.

Alas! Sorry I was not available for the "Live Session". However, I am very grateful that I can catch the replay. The finish I was referring to in a previous SNL was iron acetate or ferrous acetate, which is used to ebonize wood according to the tannin content of the material. I use it a lot on walnut to make a "faux ebony" for finials used on turned boxes. The iron nitrate / heat gun recipe you provided on this video showed a stunning result. 😍 I love wood finishing and look forward to trying it out. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. 😊

On the link provided for Wood Finishes Enterprises, I can only find Ferrous Sulfate in granular form. Would that produce similar results to the Iron Nitrate solution you show in your video?

Since the mineral oil is non-drying, will it diffuse into the wood and the grain pop effect fade?

FYI here is what National library of medicine says about Potassium Dichromate: "Potassium dichromate primarily affects the respiratory tract causing ulcerations, shortness of breath, bronchitis, pneumonia and asthma but can also affect the gastrointestinal tract, liver, kidneys and immune system. This substance is a known human carcinogen and is associated with an increased risk of developing lung cancer and cancer of the sinonasal cavity." If I were you, I would use a respiratory mask and would not use it on anything that is in contact with food.

Thank you. Yes, I tried to impress strongly to follow the safety recommendations. The main danger is from breathing the dust form, with any risk of breathing greatly reduced when in liquid form. Definitely worth being cautious when using it. Thanks again! 👍

Yep ferric nitrate to ferric oxide is correct

Ferrous nitrate and ferric nitrate are not the same. Ferrous is iron 2 oxidation state and ferric is iron 3 oxidation state. One can oxidize the ferrous form to the ferric form.

Wonder what this would do to birds Eye maple? Any thoughts on how to make the eyes pop more? Bill K
