I don't use olaplex but I can tell you when I was into it there were a lot of people not using it as directed. People would leave it in for hours, overnight, or as a leave in until next wash day. I was using K18 religiously and felt it started drying my hair out overtime. It has a lot of denatured alcohol in it. I'm pretty much over bond builders. I got along just fine before they came to market. For me, I need to stop trying every new shiny thing presented to us.

I feel like Olaplex is being punished for its success. I personally have a strong chemical reaction to Diet Coke, but I do not expect to sue them or shut them down or change their recipe. I also cannot stand the way Maui Moisture products make my hair feel, but others love them. I don’t expect Maui Moisture to remedy their products to fit me. I move on to what works for my hair. Everyone’s hair is different. The amounts you need to use a product varies per person. I don’t expect any company to know that on my behalf. I hope that Olaplex doesn’t become a product only accessible to cosmetologists because of this.

I get you, not everything works for everyone and that’s ok! Tbh they specify the amounts in their directions I.e a pea sized amount and I’ll hold my hands up I use way more than they say to but this idea over overusing bonding treatments is concerning if their products specify you can use them daily and weekly && me too because I love their products 😭😭 I don’t think it will would be a huge loss for them xx

Great video, I didn't know about this issue with Olaplex. I had severe heat damage in January last year from a salon. My hair was past bra strap length and I ended up shoulder length. In desperation I used Olaplex 0 and 3 also Ahojee, over 6 months. Then I braided it and took my braids out 9 months later. I was so happy to see my curls had returned and my hair has grown back thicker and looks healthy again. I will continue to use Olaplex because it saved my hair.

I have the exact same story! Had severe heat damage and used OLAPLEX religiously and it nursed my hair back to health! For me it really worked xxx

This confirms what I suspected about this product and how I've planned to use it. I intend to use it in the place of protein treatments, alternating with moisture focused wash days accordingly. I experienced the same thing being mentioned here with k18 and they even say not to use more than every 4 washes after the initial 5 washes in a row. They also caution against using more than a quarter size amount, up to 4 quarters if very dense, thick hair. Olaplex wants that extra money from having people over use it, so that's why they aren't saying this!

About a year ago, I used Olaplex and it was great for 4 months. I followed the instructions and loved the product. Then, my hair suddenly got really brittle on the ends and just broke off totally! I kept reading all these great reviews about Olaplex and questioned whether it was the product or something I had done. It was not me, it was the product! I stopped using it, tossed $100s of dollars worth of Olaplex, and my hair stopped breaking. I did not know about the law suit or the other complaints. But I am so glad that the truth about this product is being revealed.

You did an incredible job breaking this down in a way that everyone can understand. Education is very powerful. If we had this information to know that Olaplex can build up in the Cuticle, similar to protein (which olaplex should have had their scientist explain what you just did) then we would be able to make sound discussion with the proper information. Maybe all those cases would not be, just a thought. But thank you so much for your informative videos!

I have learned through trial and error that I cannot use Olaplex along with other hair products that contain protein. The combination of the two causes my hair to be dry. So if I am using Olaplex that wash day I make sure my other hair products don’t contain proteins.
@hotchocolate1 Жыл бұрын
It sounds like it's a user error. You also have to moisturize your hair really well afterward, because Alphogee is really strong, and they have a moisturizing conditioner that you have to use.
@EBB5059 ай бұрын
Yes, the 2 step aphogee treatment reminds me of this. You have to know what you're doing or you can break your hair in clumps. The first step where your hair goes hard tells you thst you have to put a lot of moisture back in and you should not use it regularly.
@iateyursandwiches8 ай бұрын
14:15 i think it basically is a protein treatment. It increases the strength of the protein bonds thus it is increasing the structure of the hair and thus has the risk of over building up the protein strength and making the hair overly rigid, like protein overload... It just works more internally than externally. More useful fir structure(aka elasticity and curl pattern)
@Sloppyjoey1 Жыл бұрын
As usual, there's levels to this argument, I usually do not defend companies because everyone's body is different but I want to parse out my response. 1.) The Olaplex issue is the same as the protein issue. Scientists believe that because it works in a lab, it will be effective in real life. Science in a lab is not a real life experience. "Strong" hair in a lab looks "good" whereas in real life it can lead to unmanageable hair that snags, breaks and fights back lol. 2.) Olaplex essentially is a protein, and while were at it, virtually everything with a single organic ingredient that is not water/fat contains protein. In my view if it 'rebuilds' bonds, it's a protein in any real world sense, since your hair it constantly losing and gaining protein and bonds for eternity. Saying olaplex isn't protein is like saying "Ice isn't water", it's using the phase to be misleading. 3.) Scientists in general have lost almost all of their healthy agnosticism. Sorry for the long post but I'm glad you made this video. There's been a real reckoning in the science community regarding grandiose claims that seems to have really picked up surrounding covid and the vaccine. Scientists are often quick to trust lab results that ignore the nuances of real life. Thank you for not discounting real world experiences because people who believe to heavily in something can be quick to gaslight people.

my hairstylist told me it was because they weren’t using it like they were supposed to, as in they were using it way too much when it’s a product you should use like once every month-or even less than that.

The formula is definitely Not the same. When I used it 3 years ago it saved my triple bleached curly hair. I tried it this year and my hair became dry, tangled, and shed. When they made products available in stores I feel is when the issue started. People only need to use #1 & #2 once a year. And that's it. Not all these other numbers.......it's too much

The thing is, I know I’m late to this game but the company did not make a good claim about how their product cannot cause hair loss. It is scientifically impossible for something to cause hair loss when put on dead strands of hair. What I suspect is kind of similar to the wen/devacurl issue, where these morons were fear mongered to avoid sulfates, when you need sulfates to clean your scalp efficiently, so they ended up with blocked follicles that eventually shed the hair. With olaplex, they tested it like a moisturizing conditioner because people are too stupid to realize that a bond builder does not mean your hair FEEL better. It’s a molecular repair, so a lot of them stopped conditioning their hair. Lastly, your hair loss cycle is about 3 months, people are claiming they put olaplex on their heads and that second their hair fell out in clumps, that’s scientifically impossible. Additionally, who is more likely to use olaplex? Those who damage their hair during chemical processes, so these people think because they use olaplex they can bleach their level 3 hair to a level 9 and be ok, so when they start getting severe damage, they blame olaplex. No hair care product can ever cause hair loss, because it doesn’t penetrate the hair follicle. It can cause brittle hair sure, but that’s the point of a moisturizing and hydrating mask. Olaplex is not that, and I’m sick of people misusing products and blaming the formulation. You cannot overuse olaplex, but you can misuse it. Using it as a leave in conditioner for hours when it has zero conditioning agents is a red flag.

With all that that’s your conclusion. Considering it worked well people and then it didn’t. Based on the research it’s clearly a type of overload. I’m bewildered why you wouldn’t conclude that the best use is perhaps a 1/3 washes or 1/2. It seems obvious that for making money reasons they tried to adapt a salon procedure to an at home treatment. What they should have done is have the treatments with in between use products and if they’re smart they will find a way to rebrand or insert the new use parameters. Again I’m bewildered by your conclusion. I’m looking at your hair though and I don’t know what it looked like before I have to assume it was really a mess because I’m not seeing healthy repaired hair. I’m seeing hair that looks like it used to be relaxed maybe, so I could see that some reparations from that may have occurred.
