1985 to 1999 is my favorite time frame when it comes to watching anime. Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie. This is literally one of the first anime films I was ever exposed to and I was so excited for it after seeing a preview of it in a video game magazine. This movie was solely responsible for strengthening my interest in anime in the mid 1990's. The Chun Li Vs Vega fight scene is one of my favorite fight scenes in all of anime. Record of Lodoss War. This is such a timeless U.S. Manga Corps release. With an amazing soundtrack and it just caters to your inner drive towards all things mystical/medieval and everything in between. Macross (Robotech). I ws only exposed to the first series. The original macross saga but since I never seen the uncut japanese original, I had to settle for robotech, but I have a huge crush on the voice actress for lisa hayes. I grew up falling in love with that character ever opportunity I had to watch the show. It was literally the first anime i was ever exposed to. A lot of the recommendations are animes that I've never seen before, so I'll have to keep an eye out for them when i find more free time to watch them. I definitely want to keep an eye out for gunbuster because it seems right up my alley for the kind of anime that I like.

i remember watching Golden Boy. to elaborate on the first episode, he spent the nights studying BASIC, which was one of the early windows programming languages, but when he gets to the software company, all their programs were done in another language, which he has no clue about. he hadn't seen any of these new functions or what they're supposed to do, so he just fails in front of the girls. but as the show is known for, it's still a really good episode throughout and makes you want to see what happens in the next episodes

@JazGalaxy8 жыл бұрын
Ranma 1/2 is my favorite anime of all time and I wish I could recommend it to more people but i just can't because of the culturally adult themes. It's a show that I think is perfect for elementary school or Jr. High kids... except for the parts that are completely inappropriate. And the biggest problem is that the first episode is really the worst offender.

@@JazGalaxy I have a blast watching Ranma 1/2 on Hulu and thinking about getting on Blu Ray or DVD. I've heard that Ranma 1/2 was very popular in México and I didn't even know about it. I have the US Renditions vhs tapes in clamshells cases :) as well as other US Renditions releases on vhs : Appleseed, Black Magic M-66, Dangaioh. (BTW it be a good episode theme I think if you were to focus on a particular North American early anime distributor and it's output, story, reputation, etc. like US Renditions or of course, AnimEigo). The trope of them aging a couple of minutes while flying at the speed of light, while people on earth age for dozens of years i nthe same timespan, is used really well.

Yes, gunbuster is very much Anno’s rookie card on his way to evangelion. Quite brilliant. Recently as an adult I rewatched the entire Maison Ikkoku and I got quite a bit more from it. By the end I was so attached to the characters that ending the series was very bittersweet. This would be a good way to introduce a girlfriend into anime imo. It’s very centered in reality and just makes you feel like you’re in Japan with them, kind of like an animated Ozu film. KOR is another romcom but with some supernatural elements. Both great shows from the other end of the spectrum from giant robot stuff.

Hey, John, I was just rewatching this one and if you happen to see these comments on the older vids, I strongly recommend you check out Frieren: Beyond the Journey's End. It should be no surprise that many of the anime that you have such fond memories of share one name in common -- Gainax. From Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise and Gunbuster, to Otaku no Video and Evangelion, virtually everything this anime studio touched was golden. I dare say they are similar to a Studio Ghibli in the sense that when you watch a production from Gainax, chances are it's going to be great! Nice trip down memory lane. I actually remember all of the anime you mentioned. ^^

Vampire Hunter D was the first anime I ever watched and became obsessed with the genre for a long time after. Was weird when I first saw it, not the movie, but the time it was on. It was super early (maybe 5am?) on Saturday morning, playing on the SciFi channel, watched it before I had to go play a football in 5th grade. Had a friend who was really big into anime and he took me down the rabbit hole after that. Got Akira that Christmas on VHS, my parents didn't really care bout the mature content, they knew I was smart enough to separate fiction from reality. Still say, even though it is really short, that Vampire Hunter D is my favorite, for many reasons, but mainly because it was my first real exposure to anime.

Your taste in anime to me is impeccable! You truly speak for me with all of your fantastic old school anime recommendations. My first experience with GE 999 is very similar, the first time I ever saw it was on the Sci-Fi channel late at night, and I was and still am enthralled with Leiji Matsumoto's work! Anything from the Urban Vision license is always classic. I was introduced to anime through Wicked City of all anime to see first. I saw it on HBO very late at night when I was a child...almost scarred me, lol. Golden Boy is one of the anime I always shared with everyone who wasn't familiar with it, and holds a special place for me and my friends.

I'll go a bit obscure: "Mirai Keisatsu Urashiman". It's virtually unknown in the west (at least in North America, but there was a German and a French dub), but apparently was a huge hit in Japan, dunno why they didn't continue it (a second season was planned, though). In a nutshell, it's about a guy that gets sent decades into the future. He has no idea who he was before, and is being pursued by a criminal organization called Necrime for some unknown reason. He eventually becomes a cop, and he and his friends have to deal with the gang, often in exotic locations. It's kind of like a more family-friendly the 80s "Lupin the 3rd" series, if Lupin wasn't as smart and on the other side of the law (Necrime is usually after some macguffin, and the art style is pretty similar), and the whole thing was set in what Tokyo might look like in BTTF2's version of 2015. I watched the Anime-Classics fansub of it years ago (they did the whole series), but apparently, the first 26 episodes are available on Hulu now if you want to check it out.

Gunbuster was my joy as a kid. Back in the UK anime never really started to get popular until the turn of the Millennium and I would have such a hard time finding people who shared my interests. At the time I felt really lonely but in hindsight those moments were special to me, they made me feel like anime and videogames were my special little thing. Nowadays anime and games are about as mainstream as it gets and I kinda hate it. Everything feels oversaturated and cheapened. I realise I sound selfish and I would agree with that.
