There’s a saying in the UK which is ‘take care of the pennies and the pounds take care of themselves’. But you’re both absolutely right about the big shot/ego thing. Often in south east Asia, tourists are referred to as 2 week millionaires and that’s fine for the duration of a vacation, but a dangerous mindset that needs to be dropped for an expat.

I was given no chance for ahm “temptations” hahaha. I just assumed she was really into me. Your advice is golden. I would concur that you make your own way there to start and keep your finances on the low key. There are SO many options once you are there. It is not the west.

Excellent advice. When we moved to the Philippines to take care of my mom my husband and I decided we live simple and below-the-radar kind of life while there. We built a simple but very comfortable house that does not stick out in our neighborhood. We flew back to the States when my mom passed away and next year we will be retiring and living in our house for good. And of course we will do what we did while living there, living an unpretentious and simple life. You have to be careful and shrewd with your finances to make it in the Philippines although most of my neighbors think that I am their ATM which I nipped off the bud. We helped where needed but to become the town's ATM has to stop or you'll end up broke.

One needs to understand that Filipinos do not save for a number of reasons, perhaps chief among them being that one of the worst insults in their culture is to be called cheap, and someone who saves is cheap by definition. You are expected to spend every penny you have immediately upon obtaining it. Another thing you are expected to do is loan money although it will never be repaid. (In the Philippine culture there is no obligation to repay personal loans, and all know it, but they do it anyway, because the prestige and status one derives far outweighs losing the money). Also in the Philippines one is not allowed to ask for one’s money back after loaning it, for this would be the apex of being cheap, therefore it is simply not done. Anyway, one point here is that no matter how much your relatives, neighbors, and “friends” smile at you and pretend to like you, trust me when I say that they do not. Instead they dislike you deeply, think that you are a cheap SOB, and given the opportunity would like to get revenge against you. Remember that. By the way, the word “friendship” itself has a different definition in the Philippines than in the West. A friend in the Philippines is not someone who you can share your secrets with without fear of them being repeated, nor is he or she someone whom you can trust not to steal from you, nor someone you can expect favors from without renumeration, nor someone who is loyal you. Another thing you should be aware of is that the word “favor” does not mean free in the Philippines. It’s not expected to be. Thus anytime someone offers to do you a favor, and they very often do, they have an angle which removes money from your pocket, and puts it in there’s. For instance, someone may offer to pay your power bill, “since they are going down to pay their own”. You will give them the full amount of your bill, but when they return, if you examine the receipt very carefully, you will find that they have only paid half or a quarter of the bill, and pocketed the rest. If you call them on this, they will without embarrassment say, “Of course. You didn’t expect me to do it for free, did you?”. None of this is considered dishonest in the Philippines, and no Filipino would dare to mention it, for mortal fear of being called cheap. To us this would be a scam, and an unfriendly act, but not to them. Like I say, complaining about it is something only a crazy person would do in their culture, and will generate terrible anger and hatred toward yourself, which not that infrequently results in the death of foreigners. The whole cultural is like this. Dog eat dog, well hidden behind fake smiles. Believe me, after a few years of being “taken advantage of” by your values, and discovering their true character, the shine will start to wear off of constantly, nonstop charming, smiling Filipinos pretty quick. On the second day after I arrived in the Philippines, one of the first people I met was a fellow British teacher who told me to never forget that nothing there was what it seemed to be. Although I nodded my head sagely, I had not a clue what he meant. Indeed, I couldn’t begin to comprehend what I was in for. The first thing to learn and internalize from day one is smiles mean nothing. In the West, when someone constantly smiles at you, you can be quite sure that they do not dislike you, but not so at all in the Philippines.

They acted like it was their birthday. Some Philippines stories. I was at a 711 there were 2 kids hanging out that looked poor so I gave them some coins all of a sudden 8 more kids teleported in and I said I gave to your brother you share. Another I was in a bar having a small conversation with a girl. I bought her a beer just to be a nice guy I wasn’t interested in any kind of relationship. All of a sudden I got the arm tug and she wouldn’t let go. I said I had to use the restroom and snuck out the back door. Now thanks to Paul I can’t get the Mr big shot song out of my head.😊

I got a room with 2 beds and told her she could stay with me until then or I would come on my own in a few days. She accepted my offer. So from that point it was clear she would not be leading me around. In fact as a genuine young province girl i was doing the leading around as i had 10 years experience in Thailand and preplanned my itinerary in the Philippines before i arrived. We said " Go Broke - saving money" - Everything is so "cheap" that you buy too much of everything. -- And the currency is new to us -- we lose track of what the "foreign money" is REAL money.

Angeles City HAD a lot of US military. They've been replaced by a bunch of Korean expats who run the bars there.

If you have $4k, practice living on $2k or below, likewise if you have $10k month, and say $2k covers what you want, then keep it at $2k. From 2020 todate, the USD dollar is 2/3rd of it's value in 3 years So if your budget was say $3k in Mexico 3 years ago, it's now worth $2k Ur $4k in Philippines in 2023 may be worth $2000 in 2026 It is, what it is🎉

Hi Dan - It would be great if you and Paul could do a video together to discuss start up costs your first 90 days or so when moving to retire in a foreign country such as Thailand or the Phillipines. Thank you!

Yes, please! Maybe a review of emergency fund amount recommendations as well.

It is NOT advisable to retire in a country you haven't been to!!! If you don't know the ground rules, cost of living, culture etc. you better learn them before deciding to live there.
