Warren is such a loving husband to show his appreciation of your making dumplings like his family did. I married a half Italian man and had to learn all new ways and ingredients to make food like his mom made. I don't eat pork anymore but I'd make the same meal with a corned beef and sauerkraut, and standard dumplings but with shredded Swiss cheese to make a "Reuben Dinner".

I love Maria’s critique of the pudgey pie. Sounded like a true chef 😂 Also..Peter could try to place a ball of wet, balled up paper towels in between himself and the onion and it should absorb the chemical that causes the crying. Worth a try☺️ I love how Warren was so pleased with his childhood pork n dumplings. As moms I feel we put more pressure on ourselves to make a delicious meal for our family when in reality they always love and appreciate what we make.

Is your husband Polish at all? I married into a Polish family and they make Sauerkraut, fresh Polish sausage and dumplings. I grew up eating sauerkraut too but whats distinctive about theirs is that they rinse the sauerkraut and add water, a tiny bit of sugar and caraway seeds to it then simmer the sausages and dumplings in it. I absolutely LOVE it. Another family favorite from my mother in law is Haluski (Cabbage and noodles) as well as Golumpki (Stuffed cabbage) and of course Pierogies. There is also a bacon spread called Smalec thats served on fresh baked pumpernickel or rye bread. Oh and you make a creamed cucumber salad that reminds me of a dish called Mizeria. Got me thinking maybe you all have a Polish background.

Where did you get your wooden spatula? Given that Tom is Warren's cousin this reminded me that I need to make Pork and Dumplings soon! I think in the 32 years that we have been married that I have made them 3 or 4 times. I know that Tom's mom, Dolores, made them once a month! One thing she would also do with the leftovers is slice them and fry them in butter for breakfast the next morning. Thank you for reminding me about them :)

Yummo Jennifer. In New Zealand your pudgy pies are called toastie pies or toasted sandwiches. We usually have things like ham, cheese, tomato, or canned spaghetti or baked beans, and my uncles favourite thing was to have ham and an egg in his. My favourite is spaghetti and cheese. Our canned spaghetti is just the noodles and tomato sauce, no meat. You can also make a mixture of grated cheese, a teaspoon or so of mustard, and finely chopped onion and gherkin, and an egg to bind it all together. You can also add bacon and cooked potato chopped up finely if you like. 😋 making me drool thinking of it. Don't knock it till you've tried it, soooooo delicious!

Just a favorite memory of my childhood regarding rhubarb....our family had a garden with rhubarb. One of my favorite memories as a kid was.... my Dad would go out and cut me and my friends rhubarb after supper as a treat, and he would cut an envelope in half for each kid, and put some white sugar in it to dip the rhubarb in to eat it....this memory reminds me of carefree hot summer days....the sad thing is I cant get rhubarb to grow, and I soooo miss it...

We learned to make those cast iron pies when I was a child in the late 70’s on a camping adventure in a truck camper at Niagara Falls. The family that invited us over called the Hobo Pies. We eat them to this day when camping, fruit filled, pizza, ham and cheese, taco filling. My favorite is peanut butter, marshmallow and chunk of Hershey bar (choc chips also work). Be very very careful, it needs to cool molten peanut butter, marshmallow and choc will burn your mouth badly. The cookie bars you make are the best. My family loves them.

In our house it was always pork and sauerkraut and mashed potatoes and gravy I would like to try the dumplings but I'm not sure how many people here would like them. But as far back as I can remember every time I've ever had a sauerkraut I have had mashed potatoes. We also cooked much more sauerkraut we would have done about four I'm not sure what size it is it's not the 14 oz probably the 28 ounce can for the amount of family members we ate a lot of sauerkraut over the mashed potatoes and then the roast on the side. I don't remember usually having a vegetable side with that particular meal we normally did. I think our vegetable side was the overload of sauerkraut
