A local subscriber dropped off his Honda EU2000i. When it started leaking gas he called a few local shops in his area and nobody wanted to look at it. He then called the Honda dealer and they told him it was too old and they tried to sell him a newer model. A leaking carb is the most common problem to have and usually an easy fix. Lets find out.

Another good fix by the U-tube guru. The most striking thing to me that came out of this video was the fact that the original owner couldn’t get anyone, including a dealer, to fix it. This one was a bit tricky but not a difficult repair for a professional. Good thing we diy amateurs have Jim doing these videos so we can learn how to take care of our own equipment ourselves. Everybody watching should be hitting the “thanks” button and supporting Jim.

Dealer refusal might be because under agreement, they must use OEM parts which I deduce parts are no longer available. It wasn’t lost to me that he used the parts he had on hand. He cockroached a replacement jet and float. He cleaned up the gasket and used same gasket.

They are a great generator. After reading manual, if you half close the main On/Off control, it will close off fuel and allow motor to continue to run, to use all fuel in line/carburettor. Then turn control Off, once fuel in line is used.

This fuel shutoff method is the manual's recommendation for mid term storage, in addition to using stabilizer & topping off the tank to prevent any condensation - specifically up to a year. 1+ years it recommends completely draining tank & carb before storage (in addition to doing an oil change and making sure the oil's had a chance to cycle a bit). @leneger9174 sounds like some condensation in the tank (and into the carb) did a number over time (ethanol blends don't help this)... did you get it going again?
@docfarl

This won't have solved the problem here. Shutting off the fuel line would let the generator run for a short while and stop. Which would be no good. The only fix was getting the float to work properly, like he did.

We have used the kzbin.infoUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y for probably 30 hours with our camper and it’s been great! The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!

I have a Honda EU2200i and it was leaking fuel as well... like pouring it out on the pavement when I started it. I watched your video and it gave me confidence that I might be able to fix it or at least figure out what was going on. Well taking things apart the float was good, but there were several different areas that were clogged. One clog would force the fuel from the pump to the carb bowl, to out the carb overflow hose and that is where the leak was coming from. Used brake cleaner and the plastic stem and I cleaned out ALL potential holes and put it back together... two pulls later it just started right up with no leaking fuel! Turned it off then back on with a single pull. AMAZING! Thank you for taking the time posting this video. It was a BIG help. Thanks James.

Great work! These are a great unit but can be a little finicky at times. I am a small engine mechanic myself. This is an issue I have run into before and usually end up having to replace the carb with all new gaskets. To those of you working on these generators or even if you own one, I would recommend getting a label maker and copy the Vin number on the outside and stick it just to the left of the carb on the black engine cover. I have found that when the unit gets dirty the Vin number is so close to the ground it usually gets rubbed off especially when used by commercial guys.

I used to work at a outdoor power equipment dealer. We were a Honda dealer and sold these units. Customer brought one in locked right up. Said it was fine when he put it up and was locked up when he went to use it again. I could not get it to free up neither could the Honda factory rep. There were no signs of being run dry. I ended up putting a short block in it under warranty. After the job was done me and the Honda rep finally got the piston out of the bore. The rings were corroded right to the cylinder wall. Pitted the cylinder wall some. I think it got some water in it.

Much gratitude for seeing your way and plugging through all the stops. Tip: when using the sonic cleaner it can still work effectively if you can contain the liquid cleaner in a plastic container e. g. Costco cashew container. This can conserve cleaning liquid as well as leave the tank in more pristine condition.

Mine doesn't get used very often, so I bypassed the whole liquid fuel/carburetor issue by converting mine to run on propane. It can sit for years, unused, and it fires up after a few pulls every time; when I'm done, I just put it away again. I was told that the old EU2000i is actually better than the current EU2200i.

Use good alcohol-free gasoline and always drain the carb bowl before storing it for more than a week or two and you'll never have issues with the Honda inverter generators. Simply running the carb "dry" isn't quite good enough because it never goes fully dry when it dies with the fuel shut off. Those last couple of teaspoons of fuel left in the carb bowl will cause problems for you eventually when it turns to varnish. Drain the tank too to be sure and fog the cylinder with a few drops of oil down the spark plug hole. If you change the oil according to the manual the genset will last nearly forever unless it is used every day all day long in construction use and even then it'll last for years of that heavy use.

At 7:25, the screws that strip out easily are JIS (not Philips), a JIS driver will work better. Philips can work, but make them real easy to strip. You may know this already, so this is for anyone who isn't aware. The dot on top of them is the giveaway that it's JIS.

The only problem I have came across is owners only running a couple of low wattage light globes and using in on echo throttle. Theengine gets glazed bore and start burning oil. The fix was load it up with near max wattage and run a full tank of fuel through it, which will de glaze the bore and in turn fix the oil burning.

What I did notice on your repair is that the gasket seal being added it must have been taken apart before which always makes me suspicious that it’s not gone back together correctly or any O rings or gaskets changed on rebuild. Great video, thank you.

That generator has been used and abused. Also, you started it a couple times in Eco Mode. Page 33 of the manual says to wait a couple minutes before switching to Eco. FWIW. My EU2000i has been solid gold for years. Only gets used when the power goes out. It has kept life comfortable thru several long winter power outages. Mine developed a small problem a few years ago. In Eco Mode it would rev up and down with no load. KZbin taught me how to clean the jet...problem fixed. It is always ready to go. Started every few months with fresh gas and the oil gets changed regularly. Nice video.

A great video as always , cannot understand how the original needle and float arrangement could end up like that with original parts still installed. Watching the sine wave output and THD reading's being so close to perfect makes me want to further study the concepts and hardware that makes that possible . Filters and PWM technology with zero distortion on crossover where usually you would expect some more distortion. Inverter technology using powerful rare earth magnets instead of coil generated fields and the rotating speed not effecting frequency is so much more effient.

He gives it back to me in a box , all apart. Short of a meltdown I got no where with him. So it’s here waiting got me. Excellent work

Good job and a lot of patience. From my experience, the smoke is often indicative of people tipping these over on the side, allowing oil to contaminate the muffler. If the smoke doesn't clear after a few minutes, the muffler will require thorough cleaning that could take several hours. Still beats paying for a new muffler from Honda. FWIW, float needles do not get worn and shorter over time. That along with the RTV points to improper repair in the past. Keep the videos going!

Cleaning muffler of oil = running engine under high wattage load for an hour. The oil burns out of the muffler packing no problems...

@@JohnSmith-yv6eq Yup, I tried. Ran a whole fuel tank through it, 6 hours @ high#power settings. Did not burn it off. Had to rinse with fuel. Those quiet Honda mufflers are very intricate and thus hard to clean.

As always another helpful, well thought out video. I do appreciate you taking the time to include the different parameters, no load and under load, like THD, Frequency and voltage. With four different generators of my own, I’m hoping that you’ll find time to do a video on THD, vs frequency and voltage with no load and loaded. I live in a rural area where everyone has a contractor type generator, but very few people take harmonic distortion into consideration for their electronics.
@chrisscott1547
@chrisscott1547 Жыл бұрын
I'm not aware of any easy way to directly measure 60 Hz THD. Most people just look at the waveform on a scope with the generator under load and see how close it is to a sinewave.

Converted a very similar (if not the same) generator to electric start and automatic switchover a while ago. In hindsight it was not the ideal choice, way to cramped for making modifications but it did workout in the end.

Fantastic James at it again with bringing a tremendous little Gen/inverter back to life and looking better than when it arrived.Outstanding., Small engine repair shops take notice this how you keep your customers coming back and word-of-mouth advertising at its best. Nice job checking out & repairing this Honda! I have the EU1000 and carried it around in my work truck and of course it would get a bit dirty & scuffed up. I would spray it down with Armor All, let it soak in for an hour or more & then buff it out. This would bring up the finish a bit nicer.

This video is testimony to what I am encountering quite often with a lot of shops. The quality of repair personnel has decreased quite a bit. It seems like every time I go to a local equipment dealer, there are several new faces.

It’s funny,I stopped at a local repair shop last year because I know the guy quite well and he tells me he has a rough time getting workers in this day and age. One kid showed up for his first day and disappeared two hours later without even telling them that he quit,just left. Another older guy started and on his third day asked for a couple days off because he had some stuff to do,nobody wants to work anymore I guess.

Thanks for all of your great videos AND the fact that you used to measure liquids in milliliters (mL) vs cubic centimeters (cc) as I have many in other videos use for the same measurements. As a retired Medical Technologist it is annoying to hear the misuse of the nomenclature in liquid measurements.

That's a nice generator, I can't believe no one would touch it. Really clean power output and quiet to boot. What's nice is you can even get decals for it. I'd like to see a close examination of that float, I wonder what's up with it. I think the majority of that smoke was just from excessive fuel, probably a good thing you changed the oil. It was probably diluted with gas. Good job.

Those types of fuel pumps are a diaphragm type. If some of the seals are bad, it can and will draw fuel into the crank case over time. When the crank case gets full enough, it will blow the crankcase gasket.

Thanks for another informative video! I own a 2000I and an 2200!. They seldom get used so I converted the older 2000I to propane. Gas out here in Ca. Is nasty from the get go, so it's hard to store for lengthy periods of time. Please thank your son for the clothes pin "helping hands" idea. Saw that on an older video and made one for myself. It's better than the small alligator clip versions!!
