You can also get it without killing her by aggroing her and shooting it out of her hand, then simply holster your weapon and she'll go on as if nothing happened.

the only time ive legit grabbed this shotgun was when the leigon attacked me at the scrapyard and they killed her. Other than that i actually couldnt kill her in any playthrough. shes a merchant and a sweet old lady. wouldnt know this shotgun existed otherwise

One time I was walking around Helios One in the fenced in area near the tower and a hostile Gibson came up to me and started a fight, so I had to put her down. I am almost certain I did nothing to provoke, no stealing or dog killing, not even sure I had discovered the scrap yard yet. Anybody else seen something like it??

Yeah sometimes going through the back sort of Helios one (to get to solar array) a few dogs and barrels will be teleported from Gibson’s scrapyard sometimes they appear hostile but she has never appeared to the zone on my playthroughs

So I did the quest where you send the ghouls on their pilgramige journey thing and in that quest you need a thing from old lady gibsons house, so I always sneak in and steal it without agrowing her or the dogs, and without fail whenever I am in the solar panal area of helios one she always attacks me so I always kill her in all my play throughs

You can also snatch that shotgun without killing the owner by reverse pickpocketing. Just place some other weapon in her inventory and then pickpocket the shotgun

I remember I was able to pick this up off of Old Lady Gibson without killing or pickpocketing her. I remember I shot her once to trigger aggro and to have her pull out the shotgun, used VATs to shoot the shotgun out of her hand and put away my weapon immediately to deagro. (NPCs will de-aggro if you put away your weapon fast enough after angering them.) Just needed to repair it and it was all mine.

My preferred ways of getting the Big Boomer (or most other uniques without killing their owner), is to reverse pickpocket or duel the owner. Reverse pickpocketing is putting a better piece of equipment onto an NPC and waiting until the equip the new weapon. This allows you to pickpocket the equipment you want off of the NPC. (Make sure to provide ammunition if you give them a better gun). Alternatively you may “duel” the NPC. This is where you punch the NPC in the face (this initiates combat so they pull out their weapon), and you shoot the gun out of their hand then quickly put your gun away. Doing this results in no infamy (as long as you are quick to put your gun away and they forgive you), and no negative karma. Only downside is you may have to repair the weapon as shooting it from their hand degrade the weapon.

I actually found this on my first play through. I got mad when I failed speech check and couldn't afford buy the parts from her for the Bright cult quest, which resulted in me taking her out. After I found the weapon I decided not to reload the save since it fit my character well.

It wasn't mentioned but this weapon and Old lady Gibson herself are references to Mad Max. Max's signature weapon is the sawed off shotgun, and he was famously portrayed by Mel Gibson, hence where the Gibson in Old Lady Gibson comes from. Max is also known for his canine companion from the second flick, which is also why Old Lady Gibson has a scrapyard full of dogs, the Fallout 3/NV dogs are Australian Cattle Dogs, same breed as Max's companion.

Jesus that's why she nearly killed me my last playthrough! It was a while ago on my brothers Xbox360. I was going for Mr. House run but when I Arrived at Helios I was desperate for scrap the legion hated me because of killing Vulpes in Nipton. So I went old Lady Gibson bought scrap and crouched so and when I was hidden I stole more scrap, returned to helios 1 and when exited to the Solar panels she appeared next to me with all her dogs and opened fire. *She killed me three times before I finally got distance and took her down with her dogs.*

You can get the weapon without killing that kind lady, I did, it's just a bit complicated. Wait for when she goes to sleep, sneak, reverse pickpocket a gun with higher dps (i used an assault carbine) and ammo for it. You're probably gonna need to try more than once: reverse pickpocket, exit the building, enter again, give her the ammo. Then wake her up for random conversation and exit again, maybe wait a couple hours. Once you enter again she should have equipped the other gun and the Big Boomer is in her inventory to pickpocket. Again, you're probably gonna need to try each step more than once. Of course high sneak skill and/or a stealth boy are required.

It's funny you say many people don't kill Gibson cause on my first playthrough I killed her to get something for another quest and happen to find it while looting her. I didn't even use it I ended up selling it to get caps for another gun I wanted

Idk how unique this is but today I was doing the King’s Gambit NCR quest while wearing NCR armor and the King refused to deal with the NCR. Crocker told me to go to Colonel Hsu to work out a deal with the Kings and it lead to a lot of dialogue and scenes I haven’t seen personally in all of my years playing the game (This was all after I had already helped the King and the NCR maintain peace in freeside for the King’s questline)

u can steal it while shes alive. i have 3 methods. reverse pickpocket a stronger weapon in her inventory, then leave the area and a while to wait for the cell to reset (3 full days plus 1 hour) then come back and pickpocket it. or, pickpocket the ammo, slap her, this makes her switch to fists cuz she cant shoot. when shes aggressive, put your hands away, she should surrender. then you can pickpocket it. cuz its unequipped. or, what i did, was slap her, vats target the gun, shoot it out of her hands, pick it up, RUN off into the desert and hide, then wait 3 days plus 1 hour for Gibson to stop being hostile. then go back and make sure shes not hostile. (these work in various fallout games, i forget which method works in which game though)

I am sure you can get this weapon the same way you can aquire the Mysterious Magnum, also without killing the Mysterious Stranger. If you use a long scoped rifle and are hidden, you can aim at the weapon and shoot it until it is at 0%. Then when you pickpocket the gun will be in the inventory and you don't have to kill anyone to do it.

I used her to repair my expensive weapons then once she hit a certain cap trashhold i killed her and got everything basically repaired for free. This was before i realized how much bars you can take with you in dead money and luck builds allowed me to use casinos for caps instead

You can also shoot it out her hand to get it, then holster your weapon so she is no longer hostile. you can dupe a maria this way as well wen you meet Benny in the compt room.

One peacefull way to get the gun is through picking her pocket. First you steal her ammo Then after a few days (don't remember if thats the amount of time that needs to pass) pick pocket the gun.

Theirs a weird “glitch” in this game that causes her and her dogs to attack Helios One for some reason. Happened to me and managed to get Big Boomer as a result.
