Yes , that is what I look like , LOL . This lathe of mine is actually meant to be used with a drill , has a 43mm dia. clamp to accommodate any drill . But a workmate presented me with a souped up electric motor many years ago , it has a steel flange fitting into the clamp and also that 13mm chuck , works much better than a drill . Tool rest rail also homemade of solid aluminium , since on the die cast original one the thread of the chisel rest's fixing screw tore out . Good luck , Dieter

I really like this style of lure i have been looking at vintage lures lately and thinking about firing up the lathe. I have rule about tidying up my workshop, i don't; i wait until it gets too messy to work in and then go work in someone else's. It is great hear and see you talking about your lures especially making them.

Thanks a lot , Wayne , ......this type of lure is about the oldest type of a diving lure , that floats up at rest , around for more than 100 years now . And they still catch today !

@@61diemai I'm gona try to make it his from cedar, oak , poplar woods
@61diemai
@61diemai 5 жыл бұрын
@@wayned5872 Well-seasoned poplar and cedar would be the better choices from your mentioned options , oak ist too hard , too heavy and too dense(not to mention that it is harder to work with) . During many years of lure making I've found out , that denser and heavier hardwoods do not provide sufficient wiggle and action to a wiggling lure , as more mass has to be moved by the diving vane shouldering into the water . It is in the nature of the design , that the integrated diving vanes of these lures do not provide such a pronounced , strong and regular wiggle compared to more "modern" lures sporting glued-in or screwed-on diving lips do as these lips potrude further over the lure's belly , thus provide better leverage in the water . The swimming action action of these old-time lure models with their integrated diving vanes is somewhat more smooth and irregular in it's frequency . This is why a lighter timber material is more essential for these oldtime lure models , ...for same reason any added ballast also is counterproductive on such lures with integrated diving vanes . Many years ago I've made two comparable ones of such lures both of lighter and denser wood , and the one of denser wood did not swim as well , those heavier lures also have more tendency to overturn and blow out , as the lesser buoancy does not provide as much side stability whilst swimming along . Also carried out such experiments with two same lures sporting plastic diving lips , also here the one made of denser hardwood did not wiggle as nicely and at a smaller frequency and also was subject to blow-out on higher paces of retrieve , compared to the one made of lighter thus more buoyant timber . Anyway , I'm wishing you good luck with your efforts , as nothing beats the satisfaction of catching fish on our own homemade lure creations . Tight lines , Dieter

Thanks a lot , gald you liked it ! On the TackleUnderground there is an old thread titled "my latest lure test video" , I'd strongly advise you to sign in there and utilize the search function to access it in the hardbait forums , more how-to info about the Rush Tango Minnow there , sketches of accurate measurement as well . The action is a regular wobble at a frequency not too high , but in detail really depends on body dimensions , lip angle and tow eye position . Good luck , Dieter

Yeah , Vic , ....line tie position is really critical , as no lip tweaking possible , also added ballast would most likely not do any good , ....I reckon , that you had watched the swim test video as well ? Thanks a lot , Mikko , when filming I haven't noticed , that it would be that long , and I do not have the time or nerves to mess around with an editing program . I have not done a cupped lip before , simply because I always used to be into the steeper angled "Rush Tango" so far , and cupping the lip on this one would mean to probably have it too thin for the wire form line tie . But with these less 45°-30° angled lips and screw eye line tie it's possible , gotta try , thanks for that hint !

Not a problem with the length. My better half walked in at the beginning ... so that's what Dieter looks like eh. :-) Still trying to figure out a tailstock for my cobbled up drillpress becomes a lathe. Charred some wood and melted some teflon so far. Gotta find something with ball bearings.

Somewhere on "tackleunderground.com" there is a thread of mine containing exact measurements taken from genuine vintage "Rush Tango Minnows" , maybe you should sign in and meet me there(diemai) ? If you should be in need , you'd also get help there about ALL questions regarding ALL kinds of lures . But maybe you can't use the deeper diving "Tango's" for the surf , as they'd dig down 4 to 10 feet , depending on size and buoyancy ,.....they just have a bigger diving vane pointing more forward compared to the lure in the video , but otherwise are the same style . Good luck , Dieter

i really like that old school style lure shape, also like the fact that this was a really indepth video and long, its a shame that the average youtube watcher has the patience for max 5 minute long vids. btw just out of curiosity, have you ever tried to make the lip into a more like a cup shape i bet that would make the lip "scoop" more water and thus help it wobble more?

I do not have any experiences with resin cast lures , but if some guys are making multiple sectioned swimbaits out of resin , this simple lure shape should come pretty easy , I suppose , .......just a matter of adding enough microballoons to your resin to achieve the right buoancy , ....also you should go thru-wired , I reckon ? Good luck , Dieter

Nice video, looked ist for 46,23 minutes. Dieter what does Lathe mean in german? Drehbank? When i don´t clean up my workshop it looks messi like yours. :-) But i take the time to clean it up, sometimes. Like that your tutorials are in english, so i have to listen that language and enhance my school english. Thanks for that, nad thanks for such nice lures. Like your "retro lures" Gruß Alex

can I make this lure a jointed plug for Muskies and tiger muskie? i like the swimming action in the tub test video and would like to know if you have tried to make a jointed version of this lure? and would it work if I made it bigger than the one in this video? 12 inches or longer I use red ceder will that make a difference in action great video my friend tight lines my friend
@61diemai
@61diemai 8 жыл бұрын
+outdoors man In theory it is possible , off course , I have made very few jointed versions as well ! BUT , .....I have concerns about the sheer size and volume of such large lure , meaning that being made of Red Cedar it would turn out extremely buoyant , thus might not dive properly , maybe just a few inches deep or even turn out a wake bait . And as I've stated in the video , added ballast to such lures with an integrated diving plane is also problematic , especially a jointed lure won't forgive too much ballast in the rear section . On the other hand , a lure of a less buoyant sort of timber would tend to dive deeper, but also heavier material does dampen the wiggling action , that is a rule of thumb about any kind of timber lure , ....the more dense material , the more sluggish the action , ....vice versa , .....the lighter the material , the more lively the action . So I guess , that you would not get around some trial and error , .....I'd suggest to keep the lurebody somewhat more slender to decrease volume thus buoancy a bit , .....naturally for muskie you would also assemble heavier and sturdy hardware , which would also decrease buoancy to a certain grade . As a little input you might google term "Heddon Gamefisher" , this is a double-jointed vintage lure of that style , though it's lip portion is a little different and irregular shaped . You might also sign in on www.tackleunderground.com , if you'd need further assistance , some great guys around there always willing to help fellow lure carvers out , .....also there is a thread there about the old "Rush Tango Minnow" , ....the earliest "ancestor" of this type of lures , dating back to about 1915 , ......I've once put up exact measurements taken from original(one piece) lures there . Good luck and best greetings from northern Germany , Dieter

+outdoors man I'm not too familiar with your timbers over there in the US , ....I know Red Cedar , since a friend from Tennessee had once send me some samples , ......is Basswood or Poplar even heavier than Red Cedar ? At least these are the three timbers , that I know to be mainly used for lures in the USA , ........for heavier lures , in particular glidebaits I'm also using Teakwood , ....but remember , ..for a lure of your intended size you'd need quite a big log to turn down on your lathe . Good Luck , Dieter

+Harm Deiman Quite impossible to do here on KZbin , as it takes a bit of communication and also posting pictures and deatailed describtions about your problems with the faulty lures . I would advise you to join www.tackleunderground.com/ , it's the wolds largest lurebuilding forum based in the USA . I figure out , that you are located in the Netherlands , so if you should probably understand German, you may also join forum.mt-lures.de/index.php ........a Dutch site , that is related to luremaking is www.lurebuilding.nl/index.html .......but this one does not have a forum for discussions , as far , as I'm concerned . Such forums have always helped out newbie luremakers to get their first lures to perform , ...just join in , post your questions along with some pictures in there and surely someone would lead you on the right path . Good luck , Dieter BTW , .....I'm also active on both the German and the US forums , my screenname there is "diemai" .

What is Lip angle & length.
@61diemai
@61diemai 9 жыл бұрын
Actually I don't know , did the lure freehanded ,........a longer head con results into a more forward pointing diving plane for deeper diving ,a shorter head con as shown results into a more downward pointing diving plane for shallower running . Some more info about more accurate versions of the old "Rush Tango Minnow" in here : www.tackleunderground.com/community/topic/17724-my-latest-lure-test-Video Actually one can make such lures differently in terms of lip angle , body shape , etc. to get different swimming actions ,...best is to make a simple sketch for yourself to work after, try making different versions to see , what works best for you . Good luck , 61diemai

what size lathe are you using? thanks
@61diemai
@61diemai 8 жыл бұрын
+Paul Giglio It's not a genuine lathe , rather a lathe device consisting of a aluminum base rail, a clamp mount with a 43mm standard bore to fix an electric drill , tool rest and a tailstock with a tip . Instead of a drill I have a pimped electric motor with a 43mm flange and a chuck to clamp the center tip piece , ......that motor just generates more power than a cheaper drill , also runs smoother . Center tip clearance above the base rail is about 8cms , max. distance between tips is about 60cms ,.........so to me it is enough for hobby luremaking , but also just not a real woodworking pro's power tool ! Thanks a lot , but my own English is far from being perfect , LOL , doing my vids in English , simply because they reach far more viewers this way , rather than making them in German . Wish that I would take the time for cleaning up as well now and then , but it always bothers me , that within the time required to do so , I could do a couple of lures instead , LOL . The term "lathe"can be "Drechselbank" as well as "Drehbank" in German , but the latter can be called "milling machine" as well .
