This worked great on the Club Car DS I'm working on, thanks for the video! Saved a bunch of time and trouble. Who needs special tools when you have an old mechanics trick!

Great tip! I never tried it but I saw another video where a bearing was removed using grease & pushing it out with bread. Stay well, Joe Z

This worked! I was skeptical at first because I had a hard time getting all the air out of the grease. I had the get a needle adapter and small grease gun to fill the void from the bottom. Once it was all grease, it took only about half the threads ~1” to pop the primary drive clutch on our 1982 Harley Davidson golf cart. Now I can repair or replace the clutch. So far no luck finding a replacement. BTW do not go putting things in the hole to press with the bolt, if it doesn’t go all the way to the bottom you can damage the threads in the crank. I have some threads to repair because I was impatient. This works, just get the air out. Thank you!

Thank you. Your video did help! Do you have a link where I can purchase quality clutches? What about inserting a steel rod smaller in diameter than the original bolt and long enough to bottom out in the crank and short enough so it is recessed an inch or so below the threads where your puller tool would thread in. Then put your 7/16 bolt in and gradually tighten until you hear the clutch break loose from the shaft. What do you think?? Kind of wondering how you stuff all that grease all the way thru the entire clutch without trapping air.

Where the belt sits is it a roller or dos the whole clutch spin?

This works, but also you can just put a smaller bolt with the head cut off inside before you put the 7/16 bolt in.
@rogerveium3753 Жыл бұрын
Wow. You dont know how much you helped me but it is alot! Seems like all a guy needs to do to test the primary clutch is to take the belt off and rev up the engine and you should be able to see it compress and relax the sheaves. I didnt know about the center being free rotating though. Awsome. Is there a simple way to check the secondary other than lifting the rear wheels and reving it? Im still learning about these so forgive my ignorance. BTW your grease method is genius!

We used to use this trick to remove brass pilot bushings out of crankshafts for cars with standard transmissions when I was a kid and I forgot all about it. I came here looking for a way to remove aftermarket comet clutch from Yamaha golf cart. Yamaha clutch blew up, comet/Club Car style clutch a cheap replacement but does not fit crankshaft well and will not turn the motor over. Now on to the next answer, do I peen crankshaft or clutch to tighten up fit on the taper. Should have put spent the extra $150 on Yamaha clutch I guess.
@chadmartin38332 жыл бұрын
With pilot shaft bearing you can do the samevthing. Or bread works too

I can't get my bolt to start threading into the crankshaft. Is there a trick to putting the mounting bolt back in? does it require an impact gun?
@donsscooters3 жыл бұрын
Great trick for clutch removal. That Clutch is still good though, the kit is Clubcar part number 1014453 for this clutch. With the fiber bushings replaced and the roller bushing cleaned with spray cleaner this one would be good for years. I've repaired a few and the parts are less than $25 from the dealer or less than $20 on Amazon. Plus you don't need to pull the clutch, just the outer cover and that can be done by removing the reverse thread center bolt then a few taps around the edges usually. The cover is not a taper fit, just a slip fit. Give my comment a thumbs up if you find it useful.
@schaticat2 жыл бұрын
my clutch usually is good for 7 holes then the motor turns but the clutch wont suck in. i imagine maybe one of the rollers is gummed or stuck. i was going yo buy a whole new clutch but after reading your comment i decided to get the kit. so i can just take the cover off after removing the bolt? just some taps? id prefer to leave the cart where it is and just remove the cover and take it where i will replace the parts and clean it up.

or...get yourself a 12 inch long 3/8" drill bit from the hardware place. Grind the shank down to about 5/16th diameter (for about an inch and a half), make sure it fully bottoms in the bore. Cut off an appropriate length, insert in hole and squash with the 7/16th bolt. Cheaper than factory tool and no clean up needed.

The trick with the grease DOES WORK. I also did not have the special tool and first I tried using a rod (cut to length) and a 7/16 bolt, and I could not get the thing to pop. I kept bending the rod. 2 IMPORTANT tips with the grease trick: #1 - you need to get a small tube and fill the hole with grease from the inside out. This is essential! Otherwise you will have air pockets in the grease and it will NOT work. #2 - put a bunch of teflon tape on the bolt to help seal the threads so no grease escapes.
