With our kids, we didn’t tell them we couldn’t afford things, because I didn’t want to create a scarcity mindset. Instead , we said that we had to make choices with our money, and right now we have other things we’ve chosen to spend it on.

I have always loved how Rachel is so humble. “We don’t have the money for that” when they absolutely do, but she still is frugal. Broke people are broke but go out & blow what they do have on what she said they don’t have the money for. So important for people to realize that

I knew a guy (he passed) who was very wealthy and had many very wealthy friends. His kids and all of his friend kids but a couple turned out to be entitled, some addicted to drugs, in and out of rehab, always needing money, asked him about it years ago and he said “if you have money it is about impossible to not ruin your kids…think about the 1st car, you don’t want them to drive a junkyard car, you want something that is dependable and safe…new cars have more safety features and are more dependable…in their financial ratio 30,000-40,000 for a car wasnt much. That attitude transferred to everything they did for their kids, they also didn’t want their kids to struggle like they did, or, for some, didn’t want their kids to feel less then their friends who’s parents had money. He said it was hard. Sounds like you would need to keep your money super private, have good friends and set the right perspective on money for your kids, and live frugally. You know continue to do the FPU thing! Ha!

My husband and I were talking about privileges that you don't even realize you have growing up. Like one of my first jobs was working at McDonalds and my son talked about how that was going to be his first job. Than my husband mentioned that his first job was being a life guard and that our son should do that instead because it's easier and you make more money. I mentioned to him that a job like that is a privileged job that I didn't have access to growing up. Like how his parents were able to afford swimming lessons or have access to a pool. Also the money to be able to take CPR classes and all the certifications that come with that. There are lots of situations where you are passing down money and knowledge to your kids without just leaving them with money. Just setting them up with skills is a great way to build generation wealth.

Listener from the start here. I was listening to this episode on Apple Podcasts and immediately thought "are they drunk?" Rachel's speech seemed delayed and not her usual upbeat pace. George sounded off too and then there was the moment when George nicely hinted that the intro of the show was left off. I legit wondered what was up with Rachel and George today. After about 3 minutes of listening I realized somehow my podcast speed was adjusted to x.75 LOL I corrected it to the normal x1.0 and there was my usual peppy Rachel and George!!! I laughed so hard. For anyone wanting a chuckle, slow down the speed of their show while listening. It's like they've drank 3 of their cocktail of the day.

My answer to my children wanting something is two fold; its not in the budget (what can we do to save up for it) or we don't choose to spend money on this. We can't afford it leaves children feeling insecure with no tools to address the insecurity.

That’s not his teacher’s job unfortunately. Everything your husband tells him will just be undone at home. His parents probably spoil him & act very entitled themselves; kids are a product of their environment. I know kids from lower class homes that act like this 😮

Deviation to the mean means he will probably not be at his parents level. So on the one hand they might want him to enjoy it while it lasts. Also menial work is not actually character building. If your child is smarter and they're going to be working with their brains, you want to get them on that track sooner

If someone has paid for a child’s education, wedding, maybe a first car and helped towards a downpayment on a home. I think that’s enough. Maybe some family items, or something you know that child would enjoy to remember you by. That’s good.

I think you need to live for today and not plan few generations ahead. That’s what my grandpa did he had millions had huge mansions with dachas , orchards, wineries, rose gardens etc.. he had everything planned out for few generations to come but life as always comes unexpectedly in a blink of an eye he had to leave everything behind and flee for his life because of the war. There is no guarantee for tomorrow and tomorrow is not given. Live for today and the rest is orchestrated by above.

My great-grandfather, grew his farming operation to provide for his adult sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The company is now 106 years old. He did not leave cash to anyone, but left shares in the company to his sons and grandsons who were working on the farm. New money has made it through study, experience, and acquired knowledge. Inherited or old money has been given it based on family relationships. The old has tied to it expectations, perhaps less experience and knowledge, and is not all it is cracked up to be. No one gave Martha Srewart her money. Like her dislike her she made her own.
