People in the past thought minstrel shows were great just as they thought the rest of their entertainment was great, and they were wrong on every count. "Great comedy" therefore means, "based on my modern sensibilities, I like it." We clearly cannot conclude that anything is timeless, just that you like it despite it being ass.

Who's on first's main draw, as already pointed out by a chatter, is its delivery, its looping back and throwback while expanding upon the joke premise, and the theatrical visual aspects. You wouldn't have guessed a joke name would go that long while keeping it fresh for the audience. NL did not get that and after he read the chatter, he immediately changes the topic to vanity and subjective stuff like "aging well". Truly one of NL railroad moments of all time.

I honestly cannot see how there is any overlap in people who enjoy NL's incredible banter and the who's on first "joke" Old things are overrated for two reasons, either you experienced something when you were younger and are blinded by nostalgia, or it is something you were convinced was good by peer pressure from people who were blind themselves. The old things that are actually good are few and far between but are remembered more fondly than all the crap that came out at the same time, and that is the case for things coming out now and into the future forever. It's also tough for the good old things because they get lumped in with all the rose-tinted BS people liked from their childhood that wasn't actually good, but they grew up in an echo chamber of their hometown and cannot be convinced otherwise.
