Thanks! I’ve always seen that while traveling between SC and FL. Always thought it was an old lighthouse. Great footage!

You can't knock it down. There are people out there (like me) who have an 'Old Smokestack Fetish'. Fabulous video. Thank you

The Government began construction of the huge picric acid plant in 1917, during World War One. It cost seven million dollars and required 5,000 people to build. It would have employed 6,000 people to operate upon completion almost equalling the county population. But on November 11, 1918, just thirty days before the scheduled opening of the factory, the Versailles peace treaty was signed ending the war and with it the demand for picric acid, used in explosives. Construction stopped and the 2 mile by 3 mile site was abandoned. Conversion to peacetime uses never succeeded, and over the years the factory was demolished. As drivers pass Highway 341 exit 36 on I-95, they can't help but see the lone remaining structure of the picric acid plant - a tall, crumbling chimney. It's twin chimney was demolished. Locals who know its story might view the chimney as a reminder of yesterday's sacrifices for today's benefits. But 'Old Timers' thinking of what might have been used to wag their heads and say it marks the site of "The Factory That Never Was".
