I LOVE Old Pulteney. It was one of the first whiskys i became a fan of when i first started my single malt journey. And one of the things that made me fall in love with it was its salty character. A few years back i purchased two bottles from a single cask that The Whiskey Exchange had picked and Old Pulteney had bottled for them as a limited release. It was 14years of age and spent the entirety of those years in a sherry cask. I can only describe it as drinking salted milk chocolate. I still have an un-opened bottle of it in my cupboard.

I adore this bottle. It is one of my all time favorites. I definitely get the salty tone, but I've never found it oppressive it seems really well integrated to me and the contrast with the sweet sherry is lovely in my opinion.

I got a lot of salt in Talisker Storm, especially after the bottle has been opened for a bit. Cheers Erik!

Storm is crazy salty. Was too much for me the first 1/4 of the bottle

I like my 15 year old. I used to make a cup of beef broth soup using those buillion cubes. Just add hot water.

Someone on Reddit mentioned being told on the distillery tour that Old Pulteney experimented with aging their whisky inland and discovering that the whisky lost that salt note. Whether that is how Old Pulteney gets the salt note remains a mystery.

Ugh, when you mentioned cask strength Old Pulteney, I suddenly remembered I bought a bottle of that a few years ago and I completely forgot about it. K&L Wines picked a 13 year old single cask that I immediately grabbed a bottle. I really should open that bottle soon.

Great review. I have not had the OP 18yr but it sounds interesting, I have had the OP 15 and really like it. Just bought a bottle of OP Coastal Series Pineau Des Charentes first taste was not that impressive need to go back and try it again.

The salty/savory might be coming from Wormtubes. Got savory notes from Craigallachie and Mortlach also

Bovril cubes, salty umami. I get that from Craigellachie and Mortlach somewhat and this Puleney 18. I have had the salty sensation from some Highland malts so not sure if the sea has any influence? Quite a few get it with Talisker, which is not matured by the sea. Possibly it is an acidic taste causing the sensation of salty?

I wonder if it could be from the sherry cask. Or the warehouse manager is washing his feet in the barrels before they fill them.

I’ve noticed that the newer Old Pulteney 18s are much lighter in color….any idea if they changed up the 18 to more bourbon cask?

The picture of the bottle looks lighter but the whisky in the bottle looks darker.

Erik, going to Scotland in May, have not been before. With family. Any suggestions on what to see and do. Unfortunately, this won't be fly fishing and distilleries only. Good news is kids are 18-25. So any suggestions on must dos in your opinion. Appreciate any input you may have.

Was surprised to learn the bottles above their 12yr are 46% and natural presentation. I was so let down by the 12 that I have not even looked into the brand beyond that. I never picked up on a salty note either.

In terms of the saltiness, there could always be some cask and bottle variation. I tasted the 18 at the distillery and it wasn't like this one.

Are you in the UK or EU? Sometimes the USA gets a higher abv.

@@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies in the US. When they changed the core range from 17/21 year to 15/18 year the 12 went from 43% to 40%
