Hi Ms Phyllis! Oh my goodness I am so proud and pleased y'all enjoyed my Mamaw's tea cookie recipe!!!! Mercy gracious I just about had a heart attack when I was having my coffee this morning and strolling through KZbin and saw the title of your video about the Tea cookies. I must say - I was praying for the Lord to please let them turn out as good as they do for me! Especially since I've already been identified! LOL!!! I was going to tell you that that these cookies go real well with peaches- the store bought that are sliced and come in those glass jars. Also we decorate them at Christmas with icing. Just letting you know. I'm very happy you and Mr Bucky like them! Blessings to you both!

The BIG thanks needs to go to you, Patty, those were the best tea cakes I've ever eaten bar none. You should know Mr. Bucky liked them better than his Grandma Stokes' tea cakes. The really nice thing was how easy they came together, no rolling out on the counter and making a mess. Thanks again.

I am enjoying your videos so much! I recently lost my mother. She and I cooked together often . I learned so much from her. I am the youngest of 5 children. You bring me back in the kitchen with her. Her cooking style was so much like yours. Thank you for bringing the "good ole" days back. She was from Pennsylvania and cooked a lot of PA Dutch food. Again keep the videos coming. Have a blessed day. :)

Phyllis, I just love to watch you bake and cook...you are one of the few channels that I am subscribed to. You know, as much as you bake and all...there is such a cheap way to make the best vanilla. Ever since I heard of it year ago, I have made my own ever since and saved lots of money in the process and had the best tasting vanilla anyway. Just buy a cheap bottle of vodka and order some good vanilla beans on-line (they are much cheaper than buying them in the supermarkets)...then I slit mine open just in several places or you could open it all the way...it won't matter as long as you open it part way at least.. Anyway, after you open them, then drop about 3 or 4 down into the vodka and leave it on your counter for about a month, so you don't forget to turn it upside down every now and then. In about 3 months, you will have the best and cheapest vanilla on the market...right in your own home. Don't bother buying expensive vodka...I get mine on the base and I just get the military brand, which is really cheap...I think about $6 a bottle...this is the cheapest way to make the very best real vanilla. Of course, until it's ready, you'll have to put up with the store prices, but at least you won't have to do that much longer and it will save you tons of money, if you bake often, which I know you do, for Mr. Bucky. God Bless you too, Phyllis and Mr. Bucky too

Hi Ms Phyllis, I love making tea cakes as well, and yes the vanilla and my mother added nutmeg and so do I. I'm a 1965 child and I love baking from my mother memories and sharing with the elderly in my community and church and it's a joy to see their expression when they see tea cakes. I just love taking our elderly back to what they remembered. May God continue to bless you to keep sharing your cooking videos.

Oh what a blessing. Thanks for this recipe. My great grandmother made and kept Tea Cakes in a cabinet for my dad as a little boy as a treat. Times were really tough and they couldn't get lard but they did get what they called "commodity butter" from the government. Daddy died a year ago and I bet he and "Hampy" eat Tea Cakes together in heaven. Please keep sharing your lives and dogs and food with us, Phyllis and Mr. Bucky. I am overjoyed and inspired by your videos. They make my heart smile.

These are great Phyllis. What I did to make them more round is use the cookie scoop so I didn't have to use additional flour and also chilled the dough for 30 mins before forming into balls then took them immediately off the pan to cool. Mr Bucky is right, these are keepers! Thanks Phyllis and Patty!

I was cruising the tube for tea cake cookie recipes, knowing that it was simple, and had very few ingredients involved seeing recipes with too many ingredients I knew they weren't right for me. I tried adding the word southern in front of it and there you were Mrs. Phyllis with Patty's recipe, and I knew that was it. The self-rising flour was it. Me and my mom made these and I can eat the whole bowl raw, I won't, but it sure brings back memories of the little chunky bites my mom would sneak me. Your Mom was a true treasure, thanks for keeping her recipes going. I've enjoyed many of them. Thanks Phyllis Stokes and Son!

My mother used to talk about her mother making tea cakes. She said that she never knew really how she made them and she really hated that she didn't get her recipe. Although, my grandmother didn't use recipes very much. She went mostly by how things tasted. She did say that her mom made them fairly often. I'm glad Mr. Bucky likes these and I have written down this recipe and I plan to try this just for my moms memory of grandmothers tea cakes! Thanks for the recipe. I'll let you know how mine turn out.

What makes the old fasioned tea cakes like Grandmother used to make is the use of lard. I know people do not like to use that but it is what was used in them then and what made them taste good and right then.
@deborahjellenburg4939
@deborahjellenburg4939 7 жыл бұрын
Yes Darci and the lard our grandparents used was lard rendered out of a hog they killed. That lard is so so smooth and makes the smoothest dough I've ever seen. I would love to have some homemade lard now to make biscuits with! My oh my!

Yes me as well. But I can promise anyone that true tea cakes will not turn out nor taste like the old-fashioned ones our Grandmother's or others made without using it.

The Darci 13 Did they use lard for pie crust also?
@deborahjellenburg4939
@deborahjellenburg4939 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, or real butter. And my mom always used ice water to mix up the lard and flour to a stiff dough. Then rolled it out nice and thin and carefully placed it in the pie plate. The ice water keeps the dough from shrinking up so much when it's cooked. She did not pre- brown a crust where the filling had to be cooked, such as a pecan pie. However if the filling was cooked on top of the range until thick she would precook or prebrown the crust by pricking holes in it with a fork all around the sides and bottom and then filling it with dried beans to keep the crust from buckling. If the crust was getting overly brown just around the edges you can cover just the edges with tin foil to keep it from getting any browner.

This is the exact way my Moma use to make Teacakes when I was a child. She used Shawnee Chief flour to make hers. I can't find Shawnee Chief flour anymore, but I'm told that Shawnee's Best is the name it is now sold under. Anyway … her teacakes were always delicious and was her favorite cookie to make for us for after school snacks. And as always from a kids perspective, it was fun helping roll the cookies into balls to put on the cookie sheet. At Christmas time we did roll them out and cut them with cookie cutters to decorate. It was lots of fun and Ms. Phyllis's video brings back such good good memories!!

Oh I remember the smell of these delicious cookies! My grandmother was from Sweden, she would make these exactly, except she used almond extract instead of vanilla. Now I've got to make some. 😄

Love watching this Miss Phyllis video. I had to laugh when Mr Bucky asked grandma Stokes for forgiveness “ ‘cause they’re better than yours.”

Hooray! The search for the Tea Cake recipe is over! I'm SO glad your viewer, Patty, was able to share her recipe with you. And they DO look wonderful! I can't wait to give these a go, myself! Thank you for posting this. Many blessing to you both!

Hi, Miss Phyllis. I think my grandma made these, watching you roll them made me remember her doing it.

I just ordered 10 lbs of White Lilly self rising flour and 10 lbs of White Lilly all purpose flour. I've never used it but I very curious. I had to order online because no grocery store in my very rural area carries White Lilly flour. I'm in the Tex/New Mex desert. So I order a lot of things online! Including hard to find grocery items. But I do get what I want... Thank goodness! My aunt made old time tea cakes that my mother loved but no one seems to know her recipe. And probably their was no precise recipe but only done by guess work that she was good at. But your tea cakes look so much like what I was looking for and the age of the recipe could very well be what my aunt was taught to use. So thank you! And better than momma Stokes!! ❤️😊
