good day jack, i am a qualified field service cummins mechanic and owned and operated our own truck & dog tippers for about 28 years i am retired now and nearly 70 years old BUT i do miss my working life, my wife and i have been watching your videos on youtube for some weeks now and will continue to do so we like your style . could not believe the $6000 bill you had to pay for a turbo repair and computer reflash on your volvo, and three weeks to do so, but unfortunately being a owner driver and not doing your own repairs a lot shops will rip you off . keep up the good work jack we will be watching and will talk again. mark. Great Video Jack.. Congrats on getting Red back. I was starting to wonder. Hate to say it, But I am hanging it up myself. This last time out was a rough patch. Started making mistakes I never made. Some could have been very costly. I was lucky. I easily could have gotten someone hurt, so I decided to hang it up And move on. Good luck to you in the future Jack. I will miss running up and down the black top. But I started to lose some of my touch, plus I am starting not to enjoy it as much. When you get to that point its time to let it go. I started in 2009 shortly after my discharge from my 20 yrs in the Navy. I will still be watching you though. Stay safe, keep the shiny side up.

Oh Jack....Wow! I wish we had known, my husband could have had you fixed up and rolling in probably a day or 2. We dont live far from Lakeland. My husband is a 25+ yr certified diesel mechanic, with a strong background in Freighltiner, Volvos and KWs and Cummins. He knows he could have saved you anywhere from $1500 - $2000 on this job. If you need any work done, give us a shout.

Jack, I use to pick up mail loads from this wharehouse. Old building.The dock doors were designed for the the old 40fts. Always tight getting in there. You would have to turn sideways if you had trailers on both sides of you and you needed to get to your back doors or crank for the dolly. BTW , you going disco now with your music? I knew a heavy truck mechanic. 10 years ago he told me " when you take a big truck in for repsir, if they pull the hood back, it's 500 dollars. " that was 10 years ago. As a owner op you kinda need to be always looking for good repair shops. Glad to see Old Red is back on the road. ✌

I am NOT ONE BIT annoyed by the wind noise in the video. I love the open road, and the wind (as long as its not a cross wind). Glad you're rolling again - I know the pain of turbo's going out and the codes. too many sensors on vehicles these days.

Jack, it is great news that old red is fixed. There is no way i could go that long without a check/work. At least the worst is behind you, and you can keep on trucking.

Hi Jack you make me smile when you get the truck up and running. Some how one get's to thinking that it would be nice if they would just come clean with the story on what is the problem in the first place. They have a good idea almost always, after all the mechanics have been sniffing oil off the motor for years. It's getting the part, and then it's the wrong one ,then getting another that works but it well take three days to get here because it's 40 miles away, and we don't go there only on Tuesday. You known you would have when and got it for them. So you end up with an unexpected holiday, can't go anywhere because you don't want to be that far from your truck or how much it well cost. Good to see you on the road . I do enjoy the ride thanks for sharing.

Loved that Freightliner cab-over, nice footage Jack! Here is a tip, never put the chock right up against the tire because the truck moves around and sometimes forward as it lightens up or gets heavy with forklifts etc and it can easily get jammed that you have no choice to but to drive over the chock. ...... I have to hear more about this 3 weeks before I make a comment on it. Perhaps you were taking a week off for R&R anyway which would not have made the wait so bad. I know Volvo is expensive, they have that reputation except in Europe, but some of their trucks are really nice inside, a lot of creature comforts the other's didn't think drivers needed for wanted. I think if I was to buy a truck today, it would be a KW, however just 4 years ago it would have been a Frieghtliner. What I think is saving your butt a little bit is that you have a Cummings engine.

Man, I feel for you. Not saying it’s a bed of roses, in my experience, but pulling for the big companies like JB Hunt, Werner, etc prevents most such fiascos. The size of their fleets usually assure more prompt attention from the vendors and better treatment for the drivers. Much larger freight base inventories get you rolling faster too. I enjoy your channel and can see you enjoy your job. Hope you recover from the financial hit with the busy freight season ramping up.

Not easy waiting that long, but I think that price is in the ballpark. As long as the work done turns out good, I think you’ll recover, and be in good shape for many more miles. I really haven’t heard of a turbo job for much less than $5k. I wish you good health and as many miles as you’d like! 😎

Hi Jack I used to operate a small fleet of 6 Volvo Tractor units always driving one myself. I had all my maintance work done at Volvo maindealers. Here in the UK and Europe their backup is fantastic. If I had a turbo go down limp to the nearest dealer they would have you up and running usually by the next day. Your Volvo has a Cummins engine so I'd have thought that would have been the best place to go to sort your problem out ?

I would not go to such a fucked of backyard shop with a muddy drive yard... I would prefer a CAT or Volvo dealer--- they may be bad, too but there you have at least a small chance by calling their complaint hotline or anything.. I mean you can let a stranded truck wait for 3 weeks just because a 2h repair.... he needs to be done first and the oil change of grandma´s truck has to wait

3 weeks and $6000 i know trucking is hurry up and wait but i say they should give you a reasonable discount for letting you hang for 3 weeks i wonder if they understand the word service, anyway i hope Big Red keeps running without problems, good luck Jack and keep on rolling.

Good that seal didn't mess the delivery. Someone could walk off with one of those paper rolls. I get a kick out of some of these " get a new truck" comments . Looked at a new Pete at Hunters trk sales the other evening at Emlenton Pa., just killing time and it was beautiful. But the thoughts of that BIG payment makes me keep my old 2001.
@TheWizechatmgr6 жыл бұрын
Very likely part of the problem is that the controller required new programming from Volvo - usually an extra ~$200 in direct cost from Volvo plus additional labor. The job should have taken no longer than 3 days from the point the parts arrived - it sounds like they were making love to your truck. At least the repairs appear to have been completed successfully. I can only imagine the words said that never made the video while having to wait so long...
