Күн бұрын

Hello folks! Today I want to show you my new restoration project. I found in the garage old rusty knife. The shape of the knife is more like a kitchen type. Anyways I decided to start restore it. So, I use in that project ash tree for knife handle. Also, I’m trying to improve my skills in sharpening of knifes. So I make more sharpness knife than in the previous video about rusty knife restoration. I hope you enjoy this video and thank you so much for your support!
Sincerely, Alex. Thanks for attention!
Good luck and health to everyone! With best wishes, Alex!

Finally someone who uses simple tools like I do, makes mistakes like I do and fixes the problem. I'm so tired of watching people restore things with thousands of dollars worth of tools. Great job

BORN POWER ... that is the beauty of recycling. It is what our forefathers would have done (indeed, _had_ to do) and it is in our DNA. It is so satisfying and economical and, had we nurtured these instincts, maybe the world's resources would not be so near to exhaustion. _Screws and Tools_ is one of the few who don't have lots of electrical kit yet he still makes practical things work again.

When you showed us the before, I thought there wouldn't be anything left after removing the rust. Amazing after! You have the soul of an artist/craftsman. My heart stopped when the wood cracked and you had only 2 1/2 minutes to get replacement on or start over, I was holding my breath, then shouting, "use your hammer!" You did! Bravo! Love seeing you restore what many would just discard. God bless you!

Do you know what I like about restoration videos? it's seeing people sand, file, saw and scrub things in fast motion. I've spent hours and hours getting blisters, scrapes and cuts just to get something almost good enough; it's very satisfying to watch someone take something from rusty to mirror finish in a few seconds. What I love about this channel is that he leaves the times things don't go so perfectly in his videos.

For those who think they lack the tools to do stuff like this, you're right :) sort of. I tried to restore a couple of my grandpa's corn knives. The one tool that really shortened the amount of elbow grease required that I gave up and purchased was a little benchtop disc belt combo sander. You can get by with files and hand sanders but it will take you 5 times longer to complete the project. I had a drill and a jigsaw which also shortens the cutting time and the sanding time. I used sycamore boards and finished them with boiled linseed oil. They turned out nicer than I expected. The only thing I would do differently is put the edge on the blade prior to gluing on the scales. This was also the first time I worked with 2 part epoxy. It definitely adds a bit of stress with the limited working time. I had it everywhere, on the bench, the clamps, my hands, the blade, everything I touched turned to epoxy. I'm addicted to it now. I know I can do better after the first try. Had to learn a few lessons the hard way, but they were learned. The thing to keep in mind is you really aren't losing anything of value if you screw it up. Give it a shot.

If I may make one suggestion: when you put the knife in the vise to set the scales, don’t put too much pressure on it. While you do need clamping pressure, too much may cause too much epoxy to squeeze out - reducing adhesion (as well as obviously breaking the scales). That being said, I like what you are doing. Build your skills and your tool set up and you will be going places!

Drill your holes just a tad oversize and you won't have the trouble with split handles. For wood handles I use boisd'arc and for glue I use J.B. Weld. Boisd'arc is the densest N.American wood I know, so hard it will polish like bone. The J.B.Weld will take the heat a lot better than epoxy. Pretty handy if you leave your knife out in the direct sunlight for a pretty long period.

My uncle had this forty year old knife that was his dads, he gave it to me and of course it was made of brass and rusted all over so I had to do some serious polishing and that’s all it takes. I felt really proud of myself and he was so happy to see it back to its true glory. It still needs some sharping and there still rust that I need to get rid of any tips?

You don't have to clamp it that tight. Just enough to hold it together and maybe a pinch more of pressure. Also I always finish the leading edge of the scales, (the part along the blade) because once the scales are glued on, that part is hard to sand.

Glad you take the old-world crafstman approach, but we now have electricity and all kinds of technology. A cheap belt sander and maybe a bench grinder with a wire wheel... all from harbor freight would make that work way quicker and easier. Work hard or work smart... but you go, girl... walk ten miles to bring 2 buckets of water from the river. Saddle up the mules and hitch them to the cart to go into town to get your flour, tobacco, sugar and gun powder. Or just log in to Amazon...

I mean it's cool to do the restoration and all, but if you don't know what the steel of the blade is, is it really worth the effort?
