OLD Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB unboxing vs NEW Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB M.2 NVME SSD with benchmarks OLD is faster?
In this video I benchmark the OLD and NEW Samsung 970 Evo Plus NVME M.2 SSD to see which is faster? Both are PCIE 3.0 x4 drives with a theoretical maximum read speed of 3500MB/s. I use Crystal Diskmark and a sustained write copy from my Samsung 980 Pro 1TB. Using Z690 chipset which supports 4 x PCIE 4.0x4 drives, so no speed bottlenecks.
The 1TB uses the newer Elpis Controller vs the Old 2TB with Phoenix Controller.
Thanks for watching, feel free to ask questions.

I just got the 2TB one off Amazon for $189. In the pictures it was the old horizontal model made in China, but the one I received is the new vertical one made in Korea. I wasn't even aware of this difference before I ordered so I'm pleasantly surprised that I got the newer one!

HI, Thanks for watching. Yes, I think for general use the new one is probably a little bit better. The main advantage of the older drive is sustained write but this will be for specific use cases so may not be beneficial for all and the IOPs and Random 4k is def better on newer drive. 189 is a decent price for a 2TB drive of this class. Enjoy :).

Bro about the temperature do you think the new version is good for laptops? I would like to put it on my Samsung Expert, but it doesn't have a heatsink to cool it down. Thanks.
@TKsTechTalk
@TKsTechTalk Жыл бұрын
Hi, Thanks for watching. So, to give you an idea about temps, on my desktop PC with motherboard heatsink on SSD, I copied 500GB of data in one go to the 2TB version and the drive sustained 1.4GB/s write speed but temps rose to 73C. I think it would be higher in a laptop for same load as the heatsink may not be as big depending on the laptop and less airflow. I did use the drive in my laptop for a while though it did not get much load for my usage so unfortunately, I can't comment on the temps right now, if I do end up testing it, I will let you know. Once thing I can say is that NVME drives are known to run much warmer than SATA SSD's, and 970 Evo being performance orientated drives will run warmer than something like a low power 2000MB/s drive. Hope that helps, all the best, TK :).

I ordered a 2TB 970 EVO Plus last night, it'll be here tomorrow. I'm assuming it'll be the "newer" version, but we'll see. I just know the bigger drives have more DRAM. With NVMEs, bigger = better. So, with the prices of SSDs and M.2s at the moment, I figured it couldn't be a better time to go ahead and grab a 2TB one. I could have gotten it for even cheaper if I went with, for example, a WD Blue or something. But I've been eyeing this NVME M.2 in particular for awhile and finally ran out of space for my games. Or, rather, the games I want on my SSDs and the games I don't care about being on my HDD's. I've even got a RAID 0 HDD set up that gets 420 MB/s read speeds on CrystalDiskMark lol. BUT... as we all know, game loading isn't about straight up read/write speeds. It's about seek times. And only SSDs and M.2 SSD/NVME drives can give us those amazing load times.

For example, the 1TB 970 EVO Plus has 1GB Samsung LPDDR4 while the 2TB 970 EVO Plus has 2GB Samsung LPDDR4. The 250GB and 500GB versions both have 512MB Samsung LPDDR4. And the larger the drive, the longer the theoretical endurance rating.

Of forgot to add before its highly likely you will get the newer drive, not necessarily a bad thing I believe the newer model is faster for day to day use in theory though we would never be able to quantify it unless we look at numbers :). I've actually ordered another 1TB drive was on a good deal in UK and considering the price is comparable to DRAMless SSD's it's worth it for the extra TBW even if it runs a bit warmer than a DRAMless drive as the DRAM helps massively with wear and tear.

Very nice test, with a sustained speed that no one did this test. I bought 2tb evo plus on amazon and the box is the old version, vertical layout, but I tested and it is the new version, 2.3gb+- at startup and 1.45gb+- after filling the cache, I don't understand anything. Also the numbers with the crystaldiskmark test match with the new version that you made, but the box is the old one. I already had the first version 970 evo no plus 1tb, and it is the same as the vertical version, but with a much smaller cache, 2.5gb+- at the start of the writing, and from 50gb+- sustained write, the writing speed drops to 800mb/s +-. So, in my case i can say that i have won, my evo plus continues to maintain the same speeds as the first version and the cache is almost three times as large and with almost double the writing speed after filling the cache.

Nice review man. 👌 Had much experience with the Kingston KC2500 at all? Looks like similar performance (a tad lower) but personally I think a tad overpriced (similar to 970 evo plus here in Aus). Was looking to upgrade my main OS drive to the 2TB 970 evo plus but then the poorer performance on the newer version has made me think about the KC2500 again. I think the newer evo plus has a slightly larger cache size right? So was thinking for day to day performance (where one isn't copying large files) this may have potentially slightly improved performance? IOPS a bit higher on the new version too it seems. I'm probably diving too much into the numbers but yeah kinda interesting 😅
@TKsTechTalk
@TKsTechTalk 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment. You are right we are all looking too deeply into the numbers but I think it is justifiable to an extent. I have been reading reviews and analysing specs of a lot of these M.2 SSD's and the bottom line for me is value of price vs performance for each drive. Like you said drives are pricey and I bought most of them on offer at which time Samsung fitted the price/performance best in my opinion. Of course without having the drives before hand it's had to know exactly what we will achieve. Ok enough rambling let me try and answer your questions to the best of my knowledge. I don't have any personal experience with the KC2500 but according to the Toms hardware review below seems to have a 160GB Cache which appears to be higher than either new or old 970 Evo Plus. www.tomshardware.com/reviews/kingston-kc2500-ssd-review However, if we are comparing the KC2500 to Evo 970 Plus, and there is not much huge consistent write in our daily work flow, then higher IOPS would theoretically transform to a better daily use experience. I highly doubt there will be too much difference in most daily use cases between either drive but if we assume both brands are similarly priced the higher IOPS of the newer Samsung 970 evo plus drive should in theory provide better day to day use. Hope that helps. Let us know what you decide to go for.

@@TKsTechTalk Oh yeah totally agree with you RE looking into the numbers (I don't think too deeply though coz it is quite interesting and keeps manufacturers in check) and as a systems administrator but not wanting to get sucked into marketing fluff and overpay for a device that under delivers its pretty interesting stuff. On top of that Samsung has generally delivered with its products, hence why popular for a quite some time now. As for my purchasing update. I decided to go with the 970 Evo Plus 2TB and after collecting it noticed that its in the new packaging (as expected), no mention of Pheonix controller on the box display (standard "Samsung" on the chip picture), manufactured in China and on 28/10/2021. So I'm expecting Elpis/In-House controller, although the part number is MZVLB2T0HALB which according to the link below is/was the Pheonix controller. Either the reddit article is wrong, Samsung are now reverting back to existing part numbers now that no more Pheonix controllers are being manufactured or I've got old version in the new box. @TKsTechTalk 2 жыл бұрын
HI, Thanks for watching. Unfortunately I do not have any experience with the SN750, but if we just go by theoretical speed values based on spec, either drive in an enclosure should give very similar performance. Most enclosures will max out at a theoretical 1000MB/s actual rate will be a bit lower prob around 900MB/s. Since both drives are rated for a read speed of about 3000MB/s second the enclosure will be the bottleneck. However, for video editing there are a few factors to consider and for the most part from a few video's I have seen there wouldn't be a massive difference and I have linked a great video below which shows this point with various types of drives. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHfRoI2Ln8h7f8U So in my opinion I would think the performance in an external enclosure should be fairly comparable and both should do a similar job, hope that helps.

@TKsTechTalk
@TKsTechTalk 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thanks for watching. Glad you found it useful. Ok so how do you plan to create the RAID? I assume this will be some sort of external enclosure as I know the Mac Studio doesn't allow user upgradeable SSD's. If you plan to use it as external storage, I think either drive should be sufficient as your main bottleneck will be the speed of the external enclosure. Unfortunately I do not have data on sustained write speeds on the OWC drive so its hard to say which is better for sustained write. As you can see from my video evo 970 plus new model is able to sustain about 800MB/s. So even if you opt for an expensive thunderbolt adapter for large sustained transfers it would not help, and I think its best to aim for a 10gbps enclosure which will do the same job at a cheaper price, at least in theory it should. @@TKsTechTalk Hi and thank's for the speedy reply, i was indeed considering the OWC Express 4M2 4-slot NVME M.2 SSD enclosure, after i watched a video yesterday where the gentleman achieved over 1100 MB/s after raiding 4 Samsung 860 QVO SSD - 2.5 Inch SATA 3 SSD into an OWC Thunderbay 4 mini 4 drive enclosure (Striped Raid-0 configuration) (which is a little less powerful/fast as i understand it. (You are right of course Mac Studios can't be opened for user modifications). I was hoping to get closer to 2000 Mb/s since the 4M2 enclosure is rated at 2800 MB/s, but i might be dreaming here. As far as SSDs specs go i can't find any data on sustained speed, i suppose its system dependent so variable. I am at step one of my project of self learning videography which is to get a fast computer and set up some kind of RAID, not only for storage but also and mostly to edit from external drives. @@raymondmenard5444 Thank you and you are most welcome, I try to help where I can. I appreciate your time in writing up your use case, it's always good to see how different people use tech in their workflow. So now that we are talking about 4 M.2 in RAID lets scrap what I said about 10GBps enclosure for a single drive, naturally you will use either a Thunderbolt 3/4 or USB 4 enclosure and the OWC Express is TB3 so in theory there should be no issues reaching over 2000 mb/s as they claim up to 5000 mb/s. So I can see now why choosing a drive is difficult. It will be very hard to know exactly what speed you will achieve with different types of drives until you actually try it, i think there aren't enough reviews to help with that. Also as you said its very tiring to read pages of reviews to understand sustained write speeds but there are some good reviews out there that help with this. If we assume for now the evo plus 2tb is the drive of choice, and OWC lives up to the claim of up to 5000 mb/s I think you will have no issues passing the 2000 mb/s barrier as 4 of these drives will have a theoretical maximum of 3200 mb/s but of course we have to account for overheads so we will never reach that number. SATA is another option you mentioned and that enclosure maxes out at 1500 mb/s that's why I guess the max with QVO 860 drives was 1100 mb/s. Another thing to remember with the QVO drives is that they are QLC flash and the larger drives only have an 80gb SLC cache for which you will get 500 mb/s after that it slows down to around 160 mb/s (if I remember correctly). If you do end up considering SATA go for something like EVO 870 which is a TLC drive and can sustain over 400MB/s, there are other options too. We have the same limitations with M.2 with QLC drives and sometimes they are even slow than good TLC SATA drives once cache is depleted, but cache size does vary so mileage here will also vary depending on how much data transfer you have at a time. While we are talking about SLC, TLC and QLC might as well add MLC into the mix :). MLC sits between SLC and MLC but is much less used now because of cost. I guess manufacturers are trying to get SSD tech to the masses and affordable prices so there has to be some sacrifice on performance. But what is interesting to know is that the Samsung 860 PRO SATA SSD's are MLC drives which is why they still cost a lot and have much better life span. But in terms of performance value Samsung 870 EVO is probably the best option. For NVME drives one example I can think of is the Samsung 970 Pro but this maxes out at 1TB and also costs about double the price of an 970 EVO PLUS, but is a great drive. My camera knowledge is very limited and I use two APSC Sony camera's which are no where near the 6k beast you are after :). I'm sure it will be great! So there is an alternative which you may already have investigated but unfortunately here size will be an issue. You could try something like the 2000 mb/s SanDisk extreme pro external drives (they are USB 3.2 gen 2x2 is 20gbps I think its thunderbolt compatible as well) and they come in up to 4tb which is half of the 8TB you have planned and also may not be able to sustain that 2000 mb/s but is a great size and very portable, haven't researched this one yet :). Sorry I haven't been able to give a more definitive answer to your question, my experience with such enclosures is limited though I do have a video on a dual bay SATA enclosure which I use with spinning disks and supports 2 drives in RAID (I use 2 x 5TB drives in Raid 1). I hope you are able to come up with a good solution for your storage needs. Would be great to get an update as to what you decide to use and how it works out, could help others too. In the meantime feel free to ask anything else and all the best :).

@@TKsTechTalk Hello again TK, i have to say it is I who must thank you for all the research and time you are putting in my use case. I'll probably never meet you in real life, yet you generously lend out a hand to strangers like me without expecting anything but a thank you in return. That's what i love about the internet, of course there are dishonest people out there, but i like to think there are more good natured people like you in this crazy world. In our day and age i always say; There's no reason to get up in the morning with a question and go to bed at night without having found the answer. Now back to the issue, i read a little about SLC,TLC and QLC, i understand the principles, but not being a computer science guy, it's all new language and concepts to me. Nonetheless i always find it fascinating to learn new stuff and i know that i am at the very first steps of learning which is the realization that '' I don't know that i don't know''. Later in a normal learning process any student or apprentice has to move to the phase ''I know that i don't know'' (if that makes sense). This being said i'm at least able to differentiate between backing up and archiving files. The latter i have no problem with, since i am confident i'll be able to archive tons of data on slower hard drives if only as a security measure if data is lost due to hardware failures earlier in the chain of backups. But for the backing up part, in video production the term takes a whole new (more complex) sense, because backup drives have to be fast enough to edit video from them as opposed to a simple data copy. I mean if i do opt for a 6k RAW workflow, it will be impossible to drop the video files directly on the internal SSD drive, edit them and hope to keep them there for a long time, it will fill up the internal drive too quickly. Rather i see my future workflow as shooting on portable drives such as Samsung's T5 or T7 SSDs, then either edit off of them directly for smaller projects or download them on the external SSD RAID for bigger projects and edit off of it, then save only the rendered files on external hard drives. But it is also possible to download the original files to the internal SSD, complete the edit and transfer everything onto the external SSD RAID afterwards. The only problem with that workflow is that i'll have to re link the media files once they have been transferred to another disk, since the video editor program won't be able to find the original medias on the internal drive anymore. It's easy enough to do in Blackmagic's Davinci Resolve editor, but it is stil one more step to add to the process. So like you said the best thing to do is to test different SSDs, but they are so expensive i couldn't buy dozens of them just to test them out, unfortunately i don't have that kind of budget. Also at the moment everything is on back order everywhere. OWC says it's at least a 46 day shipping time right now. So i have to make the right choice from the get go, but when i do get all that i need i will most definitely report back with my results. Again a million thank's for your help and as we say around here: God bless

Hi, Thanks for watching. The 970 Evo plus is a good drive in this range. Ok so just to clarify do you have a spare M.2 PCIE 3.0 slot or is a normal PCIE 3.0 expansion slot? If so, you will need an adaptor for the drive which is relatively cheap but make sure you board can boot from it. Do you know which motherboard you have? If it has a M.2 slot then it's worth considering though make sure you think about getting a heatsink as NVME drives do run hot, unless of course your motherboard already has a built in heatsink you can use that.

HI, Thanks for watching. I'm Assuming you are talking about SN750 as opposed to SN850 as the 850 is a PCIE 4.0 drive and the 970 evo plus and SN750 are PCIE 3.0 drives and more comparable. Assuming that's correct I don't have any experience yet with an SN750 drive but it is a good drive. For most use cases either 970 evo plus or SN750 will be great. The only place I think the 970 evo plus dominates is the 100GB cache against the SN750 12GB cache. So if you are doing a lot of large file transfers maybe chose the 970 Evo Plus and if not both should be sufficient. Hope that helps, feel free to ask any other questions.

I had a 5/2021 "made in Thailand" 970 evo plus at 512GB with phoenix controller, but it finally had issue with writing speed. When you was starting windows, it was working at full speed, but after you was using the pc for 1-2 hours and doing again a benchmark test, it was dropping at 800MB/s. Nothing could change this, except of a windows restart. Then the same thing was happening again and again... I finally called Samsung and after some questions and photos that they asked, they RMA my disk and now I have the new version with this vertical box, that it is 4/2023 "made in China" and probably with the Elpis controller or something else. For the moment everything seems to working as intended, so I don't see anymore this writing speed drop. My motherboard doesn't has the ability to install 2 nvme drives, so unfortunately I can't make a speed test between drives. Time will show if something finally has changed.

Hi, Thanks for watching. I appreciate your time in giving us these details. So recently when purchasing an 870 Evo I came across multiple sites talking about drive failures mostly from 2021. From all the info I have read and if my understanding of the situation is correct, it seems that there were faulty batches of drives for most Samsung models regardless of controller. Seems like the issue could be related to bad NAND and this was causing bad sectors eventually leading to failing SSDs, so there is a chance your drive may have been victim to this issue as it seems to fall in the suspect batch range, I believe there are some affected serial numbers listed on nascompares and other sites, below is the nascompares list: nascompares.com/answer/samsung-nvme-firmware-update-list-is-your-ssd-effected/#Here_is_a_table_with_the_models_and_their_affected_firmware_versions_based_on_claims_in_China If you have record of the serial number would be good to know if it's on that list might help others too. @@arvacon Thank you so much for taking time to add this information. So I don't see your drive on that list so im not sure how well its maintained but then again also couldnt find any searches on that serial range. One more question if you have time, did you ever try to update firmware in magician before RMA? Seems both your drives probably have same firmware although newest firmware is 4B2QEXM7 though it also may be affected. Now I reckon even if you try to run the firmware update it probably will not update to the new one, I read somewhere (wish I had saved it) someone mentioned its possible Samsung does some sort of serial verification to see if it is part of an affected batch and only offers updates to affected drives, we have no information which actually concludes this but when i tried to update the 2TB in this video it has the old firmware and does not update in magician, just says up to date, hope it doesn't die lol its my main SSD in a laptop at the moment. From a briefly search I did for the 4xxx firmware you mentioned, that is for the 1TB and above and I had read that it solves this problem, but Samsung doesn't seem to released this for the 512GB version. I tried to install the firmware even manually with the boot usb way, but it said it is not compatible. I am an IT guy, so I tried everything, but it was obvious that the cache of the controller was finally the issue, so the RMA way was the only way. I hope the new one will continue working stably. What kind of drive do you have for your local disk C? I was wondering if I could use one of the newer 970 evo plus 2tb models for my C/Windows boot drive or is that too much space? I usually see most people with like 250 for that drive but it fills up over time so I feel like it may not be enough
@TKsTechTalk
@TKsTechTalk 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching. I use a Samsung 980 Pro 1 TB for my main drive which could be too much for some, however there are some factors to consider. It seems from specs that most drives attain closer to the higher speeds as opposed to smaller drives. Larger drives also benefit from a higher TBW (TeraBytes Written) so could potentially last longer. I think 250GB might be a bit small but 500GB+ would be ok for primary, with 1TB+ getting the best performance and TBW figures. The 2TB Evo plus I think is rated at 1200 TBW. Also I think it's also best to never fill the drive completely so if you feel like you will easily fill a 512GB go for 1TB+. For laptop we have a different scenario especially when there is only 1 drive bay best to go for larger if you will fill the space. It really does boil down to how much you keep on your main C Drive, like large games etc. If you have a larger secondary drive maybe a 512gb or 1TB will suffice. Then there is the question of if you have a PCIE 4.0 slot for NVME M.2 on your motherboard, maybe look at one of those drives for best performance unless cost is a factor. Hope that helps, feel free to ask anything else.

Hi, Thanks for watching. So in terms of reliability I don't think there should be any major impact. Samsung still lists the drives with 5 Years or 600 TBW for 1TB drives and 1200 TBW for 2TB drives. For the most part I believe durability wise it should similar, though I'm sure for all consumers and drives paired with luck results will vary, I know someone who had a 980 Pro 2TB drive and it failed after 1 year I believe and Samsung replaced it under warranty as the warranty period states 5 years. Hi, thanks for watching. I also couldn't find much information on the drive though it seems to be a QLC drive as opposed to the TLC nand on the 970 evo plus. In most cases you may not even notice a difference in day to day use, however assuming my findings are correct if the Kingston is a QLC drive it will suffer during large file transfers and could also be a dramless ssd which can impact performance slightly. If my findings are correct, then the 970 evo plus is overall a better ssd than the kingston ssd. Hope that helps.

Hi, thanks for watching. So if we go just by the tests I have done it seems that the newer controller (Elpis) is better for general tasks as we higher IOPS, however the older controller (Phoenix) performs better for sustained write speeds. So it's possible that the newer drive is still very capable in most day to day use cases and if you need better sustained write speeds the older one is better. However, lets now assume you can only buy the new version, I think this is still a great drive even for sustained write as it is comparable to other drives in this range. The initial 100GB transfer is still very quick and synthetic benchmarks are still good with great IOPS. Hope that helps, all the best, TK :).

@TKsTechTalk 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thanks for watching. Firstly I welcome all questions and happy to help where I can :). So unfortunately in this category of PCIE 3.0 SSD's the problem is that they perform very well and most of the common choices like 970 EVO plus, WD SN750, Crucial P5 etc. all seem to run fairly warm. These drives all run much hotter than conventional SATA SSD's but unfortunately that's the price we pay for speed. In general we probably won't even notice the speed difference between these major manufacturers, but it is also important to look at the IOPS and not just the MB/s. I think overall the 970 EVO plus is a very competitive drive and similarly priced to it's natural competitors. There are some 2000MB/s drives and also QLC drives which might be slightly more efficient but not as fast as TLC drives like the 970 EVO Plus but they could run a little cooler. But we also loose out on the TBW (TeraBytes Written) number which indicated how long a drive might last. Personally I think you should be OK with something like the 970 EVO Plus or WD SN750 as both are comparable drives and fairly similar performance. The 970 Pro is a very expensive drive, I believe this is MLC and runs cooler and has better durability but there are very few MLC drives now. Most manufacturers use SLC Cache paired with TLC Flash for most performance SSD's to make them cheaper for similar performance. Also make sure you laptop is able to use the full PCIE 3x4 (4 lanes PCIE 3) SSD bandwidth, there are some viewers who have left comments saying they only get 1500MB/s and I can only assume that this is because their laptops only have PCIE 3x2 (2 lanes PCIE 3). Feel free to give me your make and model and I will try to check this for you. Sorry I couldn't find a better option in this category, that would take a lot of reading of multiple reviews and unfortunately I don't currently have time to do the full research for you. Hope this helps. All the best, TK :)

nvme drives are so fast, that the speed of them barely matters. For a pc gamer, a nvme load times in games is only 1 to 2 seconds faster than a regular ssd. Once your drive is 500 MB/s read / write speeds, it barely matters for the average user. As long as the quality remains, that is the main concern.

It seems that for most use cases its possible the newer driver might be the same or a little bit better than the older phoenix drive but for large consistent data transfers the older one appears to be better. Again I tested a 1TB vs 2TB not the best test but gives us a good idea of how each controller performs. I think it's pretty difficult now to buy a drive with a phoenix controller so whichever you end up with you should still get decent performance, another drive to consider is the SN 750, though it can sustain good write speeds the SLC cache size is much smaller than the 970 evo plus, so really depends on what you end up using it for but again for most use cases even the WD SN 750 (not SE version) is also a great drive. Hope that helps.

@@CaptainScorpio24 Hey Sorry for the delayed response, did you end up buying it? Basically as I mentioned earlier in day to day use you probably won't notice any difference with either, but the older model might be better for large regular transfers but the newer model is still decent even in this regard, both very similar for example in a 150 to 200GB data transfer. Hope that helps.

Hi, Thanks for watching. I agree the price is reasonable for the performance so I still think the new drive provides good value and still holds up well against other comparable drives in this range.

Hi, thanks for watching. I appreciate your feedback and maybe i did spend a bit of time stressing the differences and the rest of the video has benchmarks as well. It is an important message about how manufacturers make changes without notifying the general public. I guess it's hard to find a balanace but many people have also found the information useful but I do appreciate comments like yours and will consider this point next time when recording, and maybe this is a lesson for me to script my videos. Thanks again for the feedback, all the best, TK :)

@@TKsTechTalk Ya know I wish more people on here would take the time you did; this reply was a welcome reply with honesty. And yes, I do understand there are plenty of people that are looking for kind of details that you provided, I was a bit short sited and that is due to my PC acting all kinds of weird, it's like the OS is fubard but only half of it, some things work great other not so. I'm still trying to scavenge parts for a new build, still need good storage on MLC end SLC is may costly, I have Multiple TB of HD video on spinners due to life span, finding good ssd / nvme that can hold up is a challenge. Yes, I will give your video another go and a sub.

@@SgtDreTecKeGamer Firstly, thank you so much for your kind comment and I really appreciate your support. You are correct, finding reliable storage is difficult especially with NVME SSD's and in some cases with SATA SSD's as well. I do believe that the technology is still maturing, and we have to pay a lot to get drives with high TBW and endurance ratings, still way far off spinning disks, and then with even temperatures are much higher. One possible balance in performance and storage is to mix the drives you use in your computer. Have a fast NVME drive for OS and applications but no critical data. Have a secondary NVME as a game or working drive and then most importantly have a backup storage comprising of spinning disks or maybe SATA SSD's. In addition to this and if you have the budget have one external backup as well. I know all this can be expensive but if we use a smaller OS drive i think it is easier to attain a cost-effective solution within needing to buy all fast NVME drives. Either way I hope you find the best solution for your setup, feel free to share it once you have completed it. If you have any questions feel free to ask, all the best, TK :).

Hi, Thanks for watching. It's a tough one to be honest and I would personally say from my testing only that the new one is sufficient for most use cases, maybe even slightly better in some cases. However, if you plan to do a lot of data transfer over 100GB then the older model might be better but I think it's quiet hard to get now and the newer model is still decent for the price. An alternative could be SN750 (not SE version) but it does have a much smaller cache than the newer 970 evo plus, however is able to sustain higher speeds after the cache is depleted, comparable to the old 970 evo plus, again this is assuming WD has also not downgraded the chips on the SN750 for current models. Hope that helps.

Larger SSD Size has larger SLC Cache & IOPS. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
@TKsTechTalk
@TKsTechTalk Жыл бұрын
Hi, Thanks for watching. Yes that correct for the most part it seems that most 2TB drives on the market have a higher IOPS than 1TB drives and SLC size will vary my manufacturer. The main point of this video was to show that the newer flash is slower under sustained loads and of course SLC cache is different in these drives because of capacity and redesign. All the best, TK :).

Hi, thanks for watching. Are you using the SSD in a laptop? if so which model? Usually desktop PCIE slots are PCIE 3x4 which is 4 lanes it's possible your device has PCIE 3x2 which is 2 lanes, if that's the case this is the maximum you can achieve with your current drive. Happy to help you check that if you can provide a model number for your device. Hope that helps.

@@vujadinovicc you are welcome. Ok so what's interesting about the HP 250 G7 is it seems to come in models from i3 7th gen up to 10th gen CPUs. It seems that from the product specification it does support PCIE 3 x 4 ( as seen from link below, which doesn't show the 7th gen CPU): support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06193977 I'm thinking, and its just a guess, its possible that the 7th gen i3 might be limited to PCIE 3 x 2. One way to check this could be to use a software like HWinfo to check the speed and lanes of your SSD. Under the Storage section under NVME check the speed for your drive, if it shows something like 2x 4 GT/s it could be a PCIE 3 x 2 port. If it shows 4x 8GT/s then its PCIE 3 x 4, might need to check with HP. Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but let us know how you get on, could benefit others too. Thanks!
