Before I decided to use 970EVOPlus as the storage for my USB4 enclosure, I was a bit confused between these two. Eventually, I decide that 970EVOPlus is my choice and had no regret it at all. I use Orico M208C3-U4 USB4 enclosure + 970EVOPlus in my iMac M1 and the Read and Write speeds are balanced around 2700MB/s tested on Blackmagic Disk Speed Test. For anyone who wants to build a DIY enclosure, I highly recommend that setup. I hope it will be helpful.

Crazy how much changed in SSD world with these SSDS.. Sata drives pretty much maxed out, but with these drives it is more complex and I really appreciate such videos for the more casual users as myself.. Thanx 😀

I have the ssd980 in my old cMAcPRO 5,1 on pcie V2.0 slot and get write speed ( BMD speed test) around 1350 MB/s, which is expected, but read speed as low as 800 MB/s. I first thought it had to do with the absence of Dram , but if I see that you are getting normal speeds in the external enclosure I’m confused to what is the cause in my setup

It's the pcie 2.0 slot. Is it a x4 slot? If it is your max speed is 2000 mb/s (pcie 2.0 runs at 500 mb per lane).

I'm running the same setup: Acasis USB4 enclosure and the 970 EVO Plus. I'm not getting close to your test speeds. 790Mb/s write, 740 Mb/s read. I'm using two different cables, a CalDigit USB4 and the USB3 that came with the enclosure (weirdly...). The included cable is actually slightly faster.

@@Rickmakes I’ve worked it out now! I’m using a Mac Studio. I had the drive plugged into one of the USB C ports on the front. Now that I’ve plugged it into the back it’s giving me very similar speeds to these tests. I didn’t realise that the front two ports aren’t USB4. Weird.

does the 980 need to be installed on the m.2 slot that is close to the cpu on my motherboard or can i use it on the other m.2 slot that runs from the motherboard? the one close to the cpu is pcie 4.0 and the other is pcie 3.0.

The 980 is PCIe 3.0 so I'm guessing either slot would work with neither being better than the other.

pcie 4.0 is backwards compatible so you can do either one. Your 980 will be on the pcie 4.0 slot but it will only run gen 3 speeds and no it wont cause any issues.

jesus i ordered the 970 plus 1TB today so hopefully monday i get it. i noticed i commented befor 8 months ago. i was looking at 980 vs 970 plus again and can see the plus is better. i love my PC parts they have been great still to this day. i have pretty much a 2015 build with skylake 6400 i5 which hasnt had issues and works great, i have a ASUS B150M MATX pro gaming motherboard thats been great and first i had a GTX970 and i regretted it months later and bought a second hand GTX1070 and that GPU has worked fucking amazing for me using 4k tv 60hz and play all games great and not much frame drops. i dont plan to upgrade to a newer system tbh. i have corsair 500gb SSD thats great and i got 2 other 320gb SSds that i think are older or they maybe slimmer HDDs and i got 2x1TB old HDDs that i dont want to use as they are very very very fucking slow at loading anything especially just windows start up. i learnt that normal SSDs are like 6 times faster which is good, but now i know these NVMe M.2 SSDs are like 10 times faster i cant wait to see it. i hate steam taking all my storage with my games lol. all together im looking at like 2.5TB in my system which will be nice. i also need to learn how to send windows to usb and make it bootable so i can store on the M.2 or the 500GB corsair. i did it once a while back and tried to do it the other day and couldnt get it to boot from it so ill have to look again. i would also love to find a good looking MATX case but im struggling to find one. ive always had a ATX PSU and know thats the one to go for more power to power water cooling and bigger GPUs and CPUs and such but i dont use water cooling and from PCPARTPICKER my system is below 400watts or so. so i was thinking if i can find a MATX case with small form factor PSU and buy small PSU. at moment i got the EVGA 800watt PSU and thats more than enough. i hate having a big arse case and so empty inside. ive had many cases and all been pretty shit. ive had expensive fractal design meshify 2, ive had silverstone big case thats like a stereo video desktop media case and that looks so damn big and ugly, theres a silverstone ml03 i think its called and that looks good but why so fucking plastic 80s looking? Lian LI did a case years ago that was all glass and slim media case and fitted all my parts and ATX PSU and it cost a fucking arm and leg like over £300 so i didnt get it but it was perfect case trust. i have to take the length of my GPU to account.

The 970 is better, he didn't test enough to fill up the slc cache, the lack of dram on the 980 especially over usb is bad.

I had the same model which is Acasis(usb4.0) and 1 tb Samsung 980 (none pro), I have got the different write speed as you show on video. I tested 2,000mb/s write 905mb/s for read with blackmagic disk speed test, so I don't know why.

They both have good performance. I think the 980 is cheaper so I would go with that. Portable SSDs are good too. I just like the versatility of enclosures. Over the years, I’ve used enclosures with tradition hard drives, 2.5” SSDs and now NVMe SSDs.

Depending on your intended use case, if it's for a system drive then you should avoid 980 or DRAM less SSDs. You are free to go with it if it's just for a secondary storage inside your rig, but I would recommend you to avoid 980 or any DRAM less SSDs if you intend to use them for external drives though.

@@Rickmakes Just sharing....bought the SAMSUNG 980 NVMe 500gb...Utter waste...not even 10% improvement in basic things like opening folders (even in this the thumbnails are building slowwwww just as in my platter drive), copying to it from a platter drive showed 120MBps transfer rate. Video editing.....OUT OF THE QUESTION.... My 4K footage on timeline stutters same as on my HDD. Installation is correct and system is fully compatible... All benchmarks show that its giving 2700MB/s read speed. AJA disk speed test and blackmagic speedtest show it as very high speed. But no practical use....only speed testers run fast on this NVME.

I would still go for the evo plus 970 because if you do the math: 970evo plus 1tb With that speed it will write ALL 931GB at full speed since TLC speed is 1700MB/s 980: 2GB/s for first 70GB but then drop to 600MB/s
