As an old head, this is exactly the type of amp I love. This takes me back to the mid 90s running a US amps 300 watt amp powering a dual 12 box from kicker. I probably remember it being louder than it actually was, but it bumped my hatchback like crazy. Down at the beach we would all drive up and down the strip just playing our music to see who was the loudest.

@@wal today they are a different loud. It hurt you back in the day it was a different kind of loud that would punish you. Today these big amps and subs just brutalize you. Only thing that not a fan of is all the pro audio type speakers used for the highs crammed everywhere. What happened to imaging? Also aesthetics seems like not as many care about finished looks. Those are my only 2 gripes so far 😆

I have 2 separate systems in 2 of my cars and all I run is AB on my mids and highs. Wouldn't have it any other way, the sound difference is very noticeable. This amp you tested is a very impressive piece not only in shear power but also in efficiency, looks and size.

I'm glad you mentioned the SQ of the subs, I recently got an opportunity to demonstrate and explain the difference between class A/B and D to an old buddy of mine he ran a Memphis 500.1 (350wx1 4ohm 500x1 2 ohm) for a few years and absolutely loved it. It pooped out on him and he bought an Audiobank class D amp that you had confirmed I think around 600w 4ohm. He hooked it up to his DVC 15" sub and said it didn't sound right. I eventually got ahold of his broken Memphis and tore it down to try to diagnose and guess what - it's an A/B design and it looks like it even has an extra feedback circuit of some kind AFTER the output stage. It sparked a great conversation about SQ and damping factor and it made it easy to explain since he had already heard a noticeable difference between the two amps

@@casemods For me it’s hard to pin down but my suspicion is that the class D’s that don’t sound good to me, aren’t filtering the square wave enough. If you go listen to music composed on a computer in the 80’s it’s really easy to hear because they aren’t even trying to generate a smooth sine wave. It’s just sounds unnatural with an electrical buzz on top. Like walking next to a large power transformer. They have come a long way with class D and if you listen to the top end class d amps it would be hard to pick them out of a double blind test. The Brazilian full bridge is just absolute garbage sounding on anything over 70hz. I would rather have no amp than a Taramps.

It was my buddy's system and I really couldn't tell any difference since I didn't listen to it every day. He did hear a difference though but he couldn't quite put his finger on it since he's not really super educated in audio reproduction. The point I was trying to make was that it was a double blind comparison and someone ignorant to amplifier design was able to discern the difference in SQ between the class A/B and D

I know I can tell a big difference in SQ when I had a class D powering my really.nice.nro deaf bonce mids an highs versus when I powered them with the JP34ab...night an day difference in how crispy clear the mid bass vocals an certain sounds in a instrumental that I couldn't hear or tell was there before

Back in 1994 I had a 1982 Fleetwood Cadillac on Hydraulics. Head unit was a McIntosh, MB Quart 3 way separates with a crossover in each door, in the trunk was the JL Triplate with 3 10W6 subs. All Phoenix Gold Amps. JL made a custom sound deadening 2” thick Matt on the trunk. DBX 4 channel 31 Band EQ for the Mids, McIntosh Digital EQ for the Subs.

I have two of the purple JP34 now. I’ve been enjoying my first one for the last 4 days in my truck. It runs my my highs and sub Very well. I have about 10 hours listening time on it and I’m impressed. I like it so much I bought another one at Slamology today. JP is giving us a great product at an awesome price. US Amps were shiny (actually a brushed finish) for a couple years but they went to a matte finish starting with the Xterminator line. It holds up better to wear and tear.

I spoke with the the owner of US AMPS back in the day, and the story is that he and his Vietnam buddy, built military spec power supply/amps, but couldn't get a UL listing for rack-mount consumer stuff, so the Xterminator was born for car audio instead. The rest is history.

Well, we've seen both extremes in the last few days. The JBC with its 15 watts per channel, lol. And now this monster. Hard to beat the content Big D is giving us now. Also, the efficiency of this A/B amp may be the best I've ever seen. Very close to class D. Would love to spend some time with it doing some critical listening. Very impressive test results.

I'll bet that if you examine the schematic for this amp you will find some important differences from class A/B amps from 30 years ago. I don't mean the basic circuit topography, it's probably some type of a Darlington Amp, but advances in integrated circuits allow engineers more flexibility.

I disagree with the comment about D4S taking a risk here. If they're only building 100 of these, then they don't have much invested. I for one would like to see more A/B stuff from them, as not everybody is a huge bass head. It would be nice to have a more affordable option for customers more interested in SQ than huge output. I was looking at their smaller models for a build I'm working on, but the class D on the JP84 killed it for me. Went with a pair of used Helix amps from Amp Guru (which I learned about from one of your other videos, BTW).

Big D the impedance wouldn’t rise as much if you would loud the woofers and port facing hard surfaces. Play with it and see.

Yes, I run 4 channel a/b, taramps, and class d Dual. Cheap amps but sounds good. 250 watts total, because small alternator 70amp and small battery, 51r. It's a Honda Civic.
